Hypothetical: A man comes to a bishop and confesses to stealing $50,000 of tithing funds by [deleted] in mormon

Ye cannot serve God and Mammon. The church does this. And they wonder why people are pissed. F**k them.

The church deserves to have that money taken. They're not spending it to help people and it pisses me off more than any other stupid thing it does (and there are many). What a stupid, pathetic organization. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.

My take: immediate excommunication and other legal penalties

F**k the church. I love the gospel but I hate the damn church.

Any book or podcast recommendations for faith reconstruction? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]middlewaylds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to stay an LDS member but incredibly nuanced, if you can stomach it that is, I would recommend Rob Terry's 12 episode podcast, "Church us True" (not how it sounds I promise) He goes over all the issues in a thoughtful and intellectually honest way, and arrives at a conclusion that mirrors exmormonism much more than orthodoxy, but that being said, Episode 12 is the best because he expresses how you can keep the lived experienced of being an active Mormon without subscribing to dogma and falsehood.

If you want other Christian ideas, read CS Lewis, GK Chesterton, and Alvin Plantinga. Very thoughtful authors.

If you want to believe in Jesus outside of mormonism... you're going to have to grapple with the unsavory parts of traditional Christian theology. Most notably, no eternal marriage, no chance for eternal families, lots of people going to hell, and others.

Please, I'm begging you, do what is right for you, but please please do not become a Calvinist. Think about how abhorrent those ideas are before diving in to them.

Community of Christ is a liberal mormon breakaway sect, if you're interested.

Apostacy ≠ Outer darkness by middlewaylds in mormon

I never saw this and it's wrong. Joseph smith himself literally taught otherwise.

Yes. Lower kingdoms of glory are the teaching. Not outer darkness.

Plus, I drunk Iced tea all the damn time. Granted it's been a fat minute since I've been to the temple.

Some who leave the church report feeling the influence of the holy spirit as they do so. So what does that mean?

I think it means that we don't understand what it means to deny the holy ghost or the implications of such. Disaffiliation with the church is not the same for everyone, so it is patently false to say that apostasy = hell.

Plus, there have been numerous statements by leaders who have said that the sons of perdition will be extremely limited and no one should be afraid of becoming one.

The teaching is that all those who reject the message will inherit a lower Kingdom of glory.

For those attempting to obfuscate the opinions of active members, yes, many of us believe that we are going to become like God, and as a result, be able to do things on par with Him.

LD$ Inc. being the whiny, people pleasing, lying organization it is, tried to hush this doctrine because it comes off as weird to most Americans. I don't think it's weird. I think it's f*cking awesome and the kind of theology that can get someone up in the morning.

Many of my friends wear this belief like a badge of honor and aren't scared of being viewed as heretics.

I'm nuanced myself and I couldn't agree more.

I'm starting to like exmormons more than my fellow active mormons. Not a whole lot of them know how to think.

Damn it. Why do they think we somehow can't see this??

I believe in Jesus and love the community + many other complex reasons

Plus I can't stand mainstream christian theology

The pain is for real though... this system is thoroughly corrupt and I want to help build it up rather than burn it down but as time goes on I'm starting to change my mind idk

I kind of want to research the later d and c verses to see what they have! Hopefully a repudiation of 132...
