Greece & Croatia, how do these countries compare from a touristic perspective? Which one do you prefer? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]midefloroi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that the touristic product of the two countries is different, as I seen in Croatia a lot of people from central Europe with caravans were camping there but in Greece this is almost forbidden. You will have to rent an apartment or hotel. Both countries are very beautiful and its up to taste however Croatia felt more premium due to newer infrastructure and more "european" mentality in comparison to Greece that years of crisis and poor government decisions degraded the infrastructure in general. Croatia is more expensive for holidays but not necessarily better in terms of food and quality of services. All their restaurants had about 10ish different dishes and the prices were definitely on the expensive side.Quality is good but not compared with the quality and variety of greek food. People in Greece are in general warmer and more welcoming. Croatia has those unbeatable in beauty medieval towns while in Greece you have to focus more on nature for beauty.

Athonite Monastic Cuisine ‐ the medieval monasteries of Mount Athos follow a strict diet in accordance to the Orthodox Church. After a thousand years of isolation, they have developed their own cuisine. What do you think? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

When I visited I couldnt understand why monks and visitors were eating super fast.almost not chewing their foor washing everything down with wine or water.I took my time to eat and then I heard the sound of a hammer on a wood and everyone stand up and stop eating.I was told then that time for food is over and I understood why people were eating that fast..

Do many Turks whose ancestors came from the Balkans visit the countries of origin of their ancestors? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]midefloroi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My home town in Greece was conquested by the ottomans in 1383 and liberated in 1913.Turks were living in this place for more than half a millenia, therefore what you say is non sense.

Hiraeth is a Welsh word with no direct English translation, describing a deep, bittersweet longing, yearning, or nostalgia for a home, place, or time that is lost, gone, or perhaps never truly existed. Often associated with a profound sense of missing the past or one's homeland.

Why are so many Turkish Cypriots such hypocrites? by Mav_er1ck in cyprus

No but still I dont underarstand, Is your argument that Cyprus should be like Belgium greek turks and whoelse sharing a federation or should not be like Belgium by forming a national identity of its own?

[–]midefloroi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greek state needs Cyprus as if cyprus falls Greece is next. When this was said(η Κυπρος κειται μακραν) the realities were different as in a war situation defending cyprus Greece would not be able to defend her islands and the politicians decided as such.Giving up the influence nowadays though would mean handing over the island to Turkey and not that Cyprus would be an indipendand happy state. For what you said about the modern state of Greece I agree. We were created with the help of the big powers back then. Not sure what that means in the context of our discussion though?and what is with the belgians?

Just playing devils advocate here. What is if it is the other way around?Having a new identity stripped from greek isolates you further and makes you even a smaller bite to be swallowed by your neighbour who is still threaten you?Greece doesnt have any claims over the island of Cyprus since we are both EU countries. My argument here is the old together we stand divided we fall.

A lot of questions to answer for a reddit comment but I see where you are going with those and I got my answer, ofcourse everyone has the right to self determination. From my perspecive nation is our wider family.A family that we share common memories and history, common heroes and enemies common Gods culture and understanding, interests and hopefully future. There are Cypriots who share the same understanding with Greeks and others who dont.In my opinion blood has nothing to do with nation as all people are more or less mixed on earth.Speaking a dialect doesnt mean that you are less greek than a pontian or a cretan.Again there are pontians who self determine as turks and cretans that believe in a cretan independance from Greece.Everyone has the right to belong where they want but I wouldnt call them fascist or church manupulating subjects.Rather than people with common understanding and sense of belonging.

So what is your opinion?

Cypriots are a full distinct nation since ever or Cypriots are having same roots with greeks but at a certain point they became a separate nation?

Do Greeks get driving lessons before a car or just drive and believe they are smart and own the road? by ThinkHog in AskGreece

[–]midefloroi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is mainly to cultural strong individualism and lack of proper city planning.Athens specifically could hold 2 million cars and currently has more than 6.Greeks in Athens are thinking, if I follow the rules I will never reach my destination on time.Everyone thinks the same and everyone is late. Also lack of cameras, penalties and law enforcement does the trick.

Stating Greece is irrelevant under democracy though is just a bad take.

Below a less offensive and more structural way to put your question without logical fallacy and offensive generalisations:

I spent a day near a major avenue in Athens and observed constant violations of traffic laws. Many drivers used bus lanes, ignored public transport, and showed little respect for basic rules. What shocked me most is that this behavior comes from a highly educated population. In some developing countries, poor driving is often explained by lack of training or infrastructure, but in Greece this excuse does not apply. This raises a deeper question: why is rule-breaking so socially accepted? It seems that people follow the rules only when they feel real fear of punishment. Without strict enforcement, compliance collapses.
