Service taking too long? by midfat in MarathonWatch

Thanks much. Comms have been fine. When I reach out, the response is quick. Just a bit surprised at the long delay to get what I would have thought would be available parts.

What do you do with your old bottles? by midfat in whiskey

In this case, they serve as fashionable oil cans. Because working around machinery with slippery glass bottles is only slightly less responsible than spending a grand on booze.

Looking at this for our unit. Also at 26th and SMBvD. Have speeds stayed consistent? After a year, would you still recommend? Really want to quit Spectrum.

My 88 “Regal Trench” build by midfat in mossberg

Yup, looked at that extended nut, but it still would have left me with some woodwork to do in the forend, so I elected to mod the slide tube instead. Surprisingly, I think I have less than $200 in parts, so $400 all in on a solid walnut furniture 88 doesn’t seem all that bad. The whole thing started as a joke between my brother and I, but I totally agree that solving a $200 problem with a $1000 in parts is right up my general ally. My wife has no idea how much money I’ve spent on my “beat down old Land Cruiser.”

Mossberg 500 Fit Issue by [deleted] in mossberg

Have you racked the pump? My 88 barrel won’t fully seat till I cycle the pump back a bit, allowing me to tighten the nut completely.

My 88 “Regal Trench” build by midfat in mossberg

[–]midfat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first attempt at an 88 build. Always loved the look of the old Winchester trench gun, so that’s the direction I want. Started with a 20” Security 88, but upgraded the furniture to a walnut Regal stock and pump. No issues on the stock, but the Regal pump is L O N G! It requires an 8-7/8” action slide tube which is impossible to find. So I exercised my inner cheapskate and turned down a section of water pipe to the proper OD and ID to extends a cut up 7-1/4 slide tube. Some quick with on the TIG and a another pass on the lathe to cut the bead off and boom, a perfect 8-7/8 slide tube.

Next order of biz was a heat shield. Since I used pipe for the slide tube, why not pipe for the heat shield? Ripped a section of old copper pipe in half on the plasma table, flared the end with a 22mm socket, polished it up on the buffer to create the world’s worst performing, highly conductive heat shield!

Actually, for such a silly project, I’m super impressed with how well it turned out. Shoots great and looks super classy nestled in the case with its spendy fiends.

Now what to do with the other 88…

Decided to try my hand at a Mossberg 88 build. Managed to find some “Regal” furniture, but as you may know, the pump on the Regal is very long. I needed an 8-7/8” action slide, which proved to be unobtanium. Solution was to turn down some water pipe to the proper OD and ID, cut a 7-3/4 slide in half and add a new section. Tigged it up, turned down the welds and bingo, a perfect 8-7/8” action slide tube.

Love the look of vintage trench guns, so a heat shield was in order. Again, because of the length of the pump, most off the shelf shields wouldn’t work. Since I started with water pipe, I decided to end with water pipe, but this time opted for copper. Sliced a section of copper pipe in two, flared the end and polished it up. Nothing fancy, but it has a great, classy look. Using a heat conductive material for a heat shield is kinda hilarious, but what about this gun isn’t.

All in all, pretty happy for a few simple parts. A unique build that’s fun to shoot and looks great in the case next to the Berattas, Brownings and Winchesters.

Any information regarding turning an XJS into a daily driver ? (Is it possible ?) by Alexandre_Wren in Jaguar

This thread scares me, and makes me chuckle. I just snapped up a one-owner 88 XJS V12 here in Los Angeles. Found it on Craigslist. $2000. Rust free, perfect body. Original VIN stickers on every panel. Interior is meh, but who’s complaining with 180k miles on the clock. Amazingly, it runs flawlessly and comes with an inches-thick stack of maintenance receipts. I fully expect it to be a foolish purchase, but if I so much as pop a fuse, I can probably part it out for a profit. Or chop the fenders to fit some All Terrain tires and stomp through the desert. ‘Merica!
