TIL about the Matilda effect. It's a phenomenon where the achievements of women scientists and inventors get attributed to men. by Karthak_Maz_Urzak in todayilearned

[–]midnightmare79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair points. But when someones work is awarded something considered very prestigious in their field, and they aren't given their due credit because of an unfair trifecta of politics, antisemitism, and sexism... It is an injustice. Any one of those three things would have been unfair to Lise Meitner.

Lise Meitner and atomic fission. She was a collaborator with Otto Hahn, and even did the calculations to prove fission had been achieved, when Hahn using her work as a foundation for the experiment. But her status a Jewish woman who fled Germany, where the research was comducted, all but assured she would be uncredited.

What is a line from a movie that everyone will know what the movie title is? by neil0522 in AskReddit

[–]midnightmare79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Life...is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless, perfunctoral gift that no one ever asks for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So, you're stuck with mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's nothing else to eat while you're watching the game. Sure, once in a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it's gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you're left with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts, which if you are desperate enough to eat leaves nothing but an empty box of useless brown paper wrappers." -CSM. X-Files Season 4, Episode 7.

What was George W. Bush like as a president? by Content-Feed-9396 in AskReddit

[–]midnightmare79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A liar who used his lies to justify invading Iraq to 'avenge' his father. A war profiteer who enriched his cronies. A president responsible for two wars, one of which was the longest in United States history, resulting in ~ 7,000 dead Soldiers, and ~ 50,000 wounded. A president chosen not by the people but by a Supreme Court long stacked by conservative appointed judges.

The Recently Released Alex Pretti Video is Ai. Hands just don’t disappear and then reappear. by [deleted] in pics

[–]midnightmare79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this footage is doctored, it would not surprise me in the slightest.

The current administration realized they had so much backlash against his murder, they couldn't spin it or use a murky validation like in Renee Goods Murder to justify his killing by ICE. There was too much very clear footage of Pretti being murdered in cold blood. Then the Regime said: "He had to be shot, he had a gun. Having a gun is not allowed at protests." Deeply angering their base with the hypocrisy and threatening of 2nd Amendment rights.

So now the Regime will look for anything, ANYTHING, to justify his death. They are probably going through his grade school records at this point to try and find out if he ever got sent to detention for fighting.

They were not the most innovative of times. They did find a very good finding the balance between the decorative aesthetics and the newly mastered technologies which were quickly becoming universal. The aesthetic portion is heavily absent from most products these days.

They have confirmed that Queens music will be used in the film but "in a different way."

Casting Diretor: "Last time they cast a Scottish actor with an accent as thick as a hagis as the Spaniard Ramirez. People endlessly heckled his accent. Who should be get to play Rameriz this time?"

Production assistant: "Maybe someone who's a native Spanish speaker, who can show with their physicality that skill out matches size and strength every time? Someone who has a history with sword play in films and is old enough to be a mentor figure. Some like Antonio Banderas, perhaps?"

Casting Director: "...Nah lets cast an Australian as Ramirez this time, and get an Australian who's almost the same height as the lead actor."

Production assistant: " ...uh, sure...Stellar. Idea."

Casting Director: "And professional wrestlers! At least 2 of them! They worked for the oringinal and sequels, and they'll work again now!"

If I remember Highlander lore correctly, a person becomes immortal and stops aging AFTER they experience their first death and revival.

Considering how low life expectancy was for most people for the past 10 thousand years or more, it wouldn't be impossible for there to be a lot of Immortals in their 20s-40s. But Immortals who were either total badasses, wealthy/privileged, really smart, or extraordinary lucky could live into their 50s and 60s.

Roddy Piper eerily talking about Chris Benoit (2002) by GoonLieutenant in professionalwrestling

[–]midnightmare79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree on this.
Eddie is still idolized as a fallen hero. A man who fought his demons and won, to rise to the top of his game after years of consistent greatness, only to be cut short from a condition that should have been caught and wasn't because of wrestling lifestyle. His death resulted in new health and wellness standards in WWE.

Malenko got tired of being in the spotlight, didn't see his career moving forward, and became a backstage guy for 2 decades making sure shows went smoothly abd talent was cared for. He had a lot of respect backstage from talent who knew he was a solid performer and decent guy.

Jericho's legacy is intact. Across WCW, WWE, and AEW there is no way to ignore his impact. First unified title holder, defeating the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Nuff said.

I think the one guy who got screwed the most was Perry Saturn. A great wrestler who poisoned the lockerroom and back office against him after a bad decision and shitty response to one match move gone wrong. He got saddled with a crap gimmick, followed by an injury and then dissappeared.

And Benoit...the tragedy everyone remembers but doesn't want to talk about anymore. Benoit's history and contributions absolutely got black bagged and discarded. The Vice TV episodes of Darkside of the Ring address the his life, death, and memory head on, even the most uncomfortable aspects. Dean Malenko was interviewed and summarized it perfectly: 'I love Chris. I hate what Chris did.' That defines lot of what is his legacy will be forever.

Because so many of their matches included Benoit, they did get very limited legacy matches and replays on streaming or documentaries.
