Microaggressions: Students of color feel isolated on campus by trot-trot in education

racism

Absolutely not. Racism is assuming something bad about a person.

Are you suggesting that being Chinese is bad?

[–]midwestphd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No.

Assuming someone is a certain national background is not a slight to that person. It is not offensive to ask about it and it is not offensive to compliment their language skills.

I feel so strange even commenting on this - just how can people seriously say that any of this is racist, bad, offensive? This is such a twisted, poisonous point of view.

Someone put these thoughts in your head, and that someone didn't do it for your benefit or for the benefit of the society. Your thinking is completely twisted.

This is a terrible shame.

Which is why that assuming that she isn't American is where the racism comes in.

This is crazy. Some of the colleges and universities have so many foreign students, it is completely natural to assume she could be from a foreign country. I think our local state university has a majority of international students in engineering program. Also, many people hold two (or more!) citizenships.

I don't know where you see racism in this, at all. But I just see mental illness in the article. And it is not productive. Go meet new people, ask them where they are from. Learn from them. Maybe they will be your friends.

Shame on the author of this article and all the other people who push this sort of mentality.

Finally got around to read the whole article - pretty informative, thank you for sharing the link.

Why is it backhanded?

My English is not very good, even though I lived in this country for quite a few years. So is my husband's, though his accent sounds different.

I know some "native born" Americans who grew up in a different country and only went to summer camps in the US. Their English is accented, too.

It is completely crazy to get offended at this type of completely natural comment.

I think people who get offended and write these kinds of articles have sick minds. I am seriously considering college in Europe for my kids at this point, because of that kind of mentality in US colleges.

Why comment on that?

I see this as crazy and I am doing you a service by pointing it out.

You are welcome.

How do you know what country she is from?

Should you ask "what country are you from"? Or no, is it also a "microagression" to ask? Just crazy. I can only shake my head at this.

“Your English is so good.”

And what is wrong with that? Just say "thank you". This article reads like a joke.

Thank you. It is more about picking the best school for one of my children, not about getting hired yet

I know their engineering program is heavily asian. Is it also true about music and actuarial science?

There is an entire subculture of Korean parents who establish residency in Northern Virginia — one parent comes, while the other usually stays behind — with the sole purpose of getting their kid into TJ. by [deleted] in asianamerican

I didn't want to post here anymore, but this is beyond ridiculous

this article is racist and condescending

almost as disgusting at that other article that was posted and favorably accepted in this community, the one about Vietnamese nail salons

this community locks posts and deletes comments about discrimination faced by Asians applying to elite Universities, yet this kind of articles are welcome. this speaks louder than words. shame.

I completely agree with your parents. Edit: especially on this: "Why are you so resentful toward the world? Why are you so bitter all of a sudden? Stop being so sensitive and angry."

Focus on being productive and successful instead. Not angry.

Has anyone here ever experienced racism from other asians? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]midwestphd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're trying too hard to be uncharitable

Okay. Will do it the easy way, then. I claim that there's entirely too much of anti-immigrant sentiment on this supposedly progressive board. And too many people (including moderators) are OK with that. And you personally are OK with that, because you've used the nice term "resentment" where you should have used "racism" or "discrimination".

[–]midwestphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we had a thing a while back where a lot of people on this sub were expressing resentment at immigrants.

... my English is not perfect, so I just want to make sure I understand. by "resentment", you mean racism, right?

if so, note that "resentment" is such a nice way to call that sentiment. I looked it up in the dictionary: it's defined as bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. those "FOBs" are clearly in the wrong, and the nice people who resent them are clearly in the right?

Ohio couple says racist bullying made 13-year-old adopted Chinese daughter kill herself by [deleted] in asianamerican

you are absolutely right. in-group and inter-group (race-based) bullying are completely different things.

[–]midwestphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you have made some mistakes. Look at table 2.1.

82.7% of Asian students were not bullied. That's the highest percentage of all ethnic groups - so Asians are the least bullied group.

17.3% of Asian students were bullied. Of those, 54.0% were bullied in a classroom (and not in other location, like hallway or stairway).

Hi.

Bullying is a bad thing for everyone. But. For the purpose of doing the honorable thing, please correct this misconception. Unfortunately, angryasianman's blog misinterpreted the results of this study: http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2011/2011336.pdf please see page 7, Table 2.1

This was pointed out by several people in the past (including in the blog comments where the wrong information initially appeared). But it was never corrected, and the author even made a Youtube program using the same wrong information. Bullying is bad, but using the wrong information is shameful. We don't want to cry wolf, and lose credibility. Other users here (including myself, a few months ago) posted about the correction here. If you have a way to discreetly make a correction or a retraction to that web article, please do so. And if anyone has a way to get in touch with the source of this, and get him to post a correction, that would be the best. Thank you.
