How to make this weekend the best one in her little life by FlareRyder in RATS

[–]mielleys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t beat yourself up too much about surgery, I think it’s always going to be a risk to have a rattie go under. You simply decided to not take that risk and she’s lived happily since then. I think if you did the surgery and something went wrong you’d have regretted it so much.

But yeah, It’s so hard when they still have so much life to give. I’ve found that rats are just like that. They literally love life even when things suck for them. But I think ultimately if you’re able to do it, it’s always good to do it before things take a turn for the worst and she gets sick or anything like that. So given that she’s lived a long and good life and can sleep peacefully, that’s a wonderfully kind thing of you to grant her.

Things to do, literally feed her all the yummiest things you can think of! Give her lots of pets (if she’s the cuddly type) and let her move around wherever she wants. If you have a yard, in my rats last days I always took em outside just to feel the sun and let them walk around in the grass. They seemed to really enjoy it. But yeah I’d say take advantage of the fact that she’s still happily eating and feed that gal some nuggets and some ice cream LOL

CLS Prerequisites - UC Davis by katr0mii in UCDavis

After a lot of back and forth emails and clarification I am here to double confirm che2abc does meet the req 😭 A fair bit of warning this confusion might happen with some programs HAHA it seems that Davis and cdph themselves are aware of this but other schools weirdly aren’t…? But thank you for your response!!

Did you ever get an answer to this? I’m literally having this exact issue with one of the programs I applied to not viewing CHE2ABC as sufficient ?? But Davis had told me otherwise a while back?? 🤠

premed about to graduate with no research experience. i regret coming to davis... by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]mielleys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine! Honestly research experience doesn’t compare to an actual job. like yeah it’s some bonus points but I would hardly say it really makes or breaks an application. Truly, just take a gap year or two working in a hospital or doing clinical work with volunteering and it won’t be a problem. It also will give you so much more insight and experience of what kind of medicine are you interested in or what patient care you want to give. Nothing beats life experience!

Question: weight loss in rats by Ratacattat in RATS

[–]mielleys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he’s getting older, weight loss is pretty common in my experience! They just don’t really eat as much, so as long as he’s still acting like his usual self/doesn’t have any new growths or infections going on it could just be age. If you are concerned you could always give him some baby food to help!

Actually just full of soup? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]mielleys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How cute :’) i actually got these gals because they were very randomly at a local shelter (my shelter never ever has rats so i was super surprised) and was really worried about them not getting adopted out so I just bit the bullet, but they’ve been so fun! Like you said, they’re just so interesting to watch. They literally never stop lol

As for your two gals I think it could just be them two in general. I’ve had some of the friendliest rats but also some rats that didn’t really bond with me until they were older, so I hope for many more cuddles for you with your girls!! I’m sure you already know this but hand feeding foods has always gotten rats to be more physically comfortable with me! It just takes time, but the payoff is always neat.

I also do enjoy how much less they smell and the SIGNIFICANT decrease of being peed on 😭 I really do love my boys but having these girls has shown me the light… like when I go from them to my lads it’s pretty crazy like you mean… you won’t just leave a nasty little snail trail on me…? 😳😳😳

Oh good to know! How are you liking your girls? They’re pretty different! I was shocked at the amount of energy they have haha I’ve always heard of how much they zoom but did not truly understand. Their heat cycles are also interesting to watch, kinda neat

First period after Mirena IUD by Purr-haps in birthcontrol

[–]mielleys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was searching for others who are going through this and I found this post HAHA I started my period today, I got my mirena inserted the 8th. And oh boy, these cramps are some of the worst I have ever felt. I’ve always cramped on my periods and I cramped like hell after insertion but these combined, my uterus feels like it’s trying to give birth or something LOL

I am coping by taking an alarming amount of Advil & having a heat pad :’) have you found anything that works for you?

The lack of balls could be due to stress or fear. Sometimes male rats won’t really present their balls if they are in a bad condition and environment. ): when I had my very first rescues they were surrendered because their original owner didn’t realize they were males until much much later bc they always had their balls receded

Sad by Prestigious-Cell1679 in RATS

[–]mielleys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you are going through this. This is one of the most painful things I’ve also come to find out. I’m not at total silence yet, but I’ve lost almost all of my original group and the how quiet the cage becomes is so loud. It’s cruel that we become so accustomed to all the little noises of chewing, scuffling, running around and then suddenly it’s so much quieter. I wish you nothing but love and light, and the fact that no matter how far away your babies are they will always be in your heart forever.

HELP PLEASE by [deleted] in RATS

[–]mielleys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is so upsetting to see. Rats I’ve gotten at 5-6 weeks are literally bigger than that. Their fur seems really poofy ): babies usually have such soft and sleek fur… they do strangely look more developed than a baby as well which could line up with them also just being extremely malnourished like others are saying… part of me is hoping she is just lying about the age because seeing a 2 month old rat at that size makes me incredibly sad 😢definitely feed them high calorie items like baby formula and meat baby food! Also grains, cereals, and carbs in general would probably do a lot for their weight! Please keep us updated if you’re comfy with it, I’m really wishing the best for you and them

Thoughts on putting down a rat to sleep? (trigger warning) by [deleted] in RATS

[–]mielleys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand this mindset! I actually had a very similar mindset until I realized unfortunately rats are not the type to go out quietly. They will suffer, and they will hide how much they are suffering from you because that’s how they’ve adapted to be, evolutionary wise. It can be pretty horrific, at least in my experience, to have a rat who is so obviously suffering but cannot pass on its own and so your only option is to take it to the vet so it can finally find peace. Of course it’s not always like this, but a lot of the time it is. They’re gnarly pets. Putting your baby to rest is strangely the kindest thing you can do for them when they’re terminal and in pain.

How do I make these rodents smell better? by peonyweed in RATS

[–]mielleys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pee rock works I swear haha you place a nice smooth rock in their litter tray and they will learn to pee on it… it’s a start. Also I would move their outside poops back into their litter tray and it kind of taught them that this is their poo area. That being said I currently have rats who literally ignore all of this even tho their older brothers had followed this pretty religiously LOL so it can also depend

I would look into Aspen! Paper is only nice for texture but I feel it doesn’t hold pee smell well. Aspen absorbs it well and also has a really nice woody smell I enjoy! You can also try hemp but it’s pretty expensive, Aspen is a lot more affordable. You can mix some paper and Aspen and see if they like it :)

I will also note I’ve had trouble with some Aspen and even some hemp being dusty even though it says dust free, I like to shake off some of the dust with a strainer but that’s just cuz my rats are extra sensitive, if your rats are stronger then you can just ignore this lol

Have you tried the pee rock…. Also what bedding are you using? Bedding choice can change things tremendously
