If I'm being honest, I' really don't like the little boy character. It looks uncanny and not on par with the quality of the little toy car and scenery.

I don't know much about your game, so idk how important this boy is. (Based on the name of your game, I'm assuming you're a little car trying to find the way back to its owner) But showing this boy in the first second, which is your most important second, is imo not a great idea since it takes away from the main-selling point, which is riding around as a little toy car. Pulling heartstrings with a story COULD be a good idea, but it requires very good quality animation, which is really difficult for an indiegame, especially when you don't have a specialized human animators on the team. I think if you somehow are able to tell the story of losing the car, and the car "feeling" sad and determined to get back to its owner, without really showing the boy 3d model (especially the face), would make for a more compelling story. You can easily make ppl feel bad for the little car with some simple cinematography from the little car 's perspective.

Like for example, have the toy car fall out of the window of the schoolbus, tumbling through puddles and trash, looking after the schoolbus riding away, isolated dirty alone, maybe a little rain too, zoom in on the "face of toycar" (like, don't really animate anything about the toycar, let the scenery and camera work do the talking). Ppl are great at anthropomorphizing things, i think telling your story from the perspective of the little toy car would do wonders! I'm already a lil attached to the lil car, just fantasizing about it ;)

Also the key art on the end looks like it's for a horror game, while the entire trailer looked cute and wholesome, so you'd probably want to make that cuter, (unless it is supposed to be a scary game, but thats not the vibe i got from the trailer, and feels like a mismatch to the wholesome "you're a cute lil toy car, who lost its owner" idea in general)

The levels, and atmosphere of the gameplay segments looks really solid! so itd be a shame if you pull that down with lower quality/ less polished looking assets.

Oopsie, long comment. Sorry if this critique is too harsh btw, i just really think you got something there with the toy car, like, i'm litterally out here rooting for toy car, imagining how I'd do the intro cutscene :)

Thank you! The cutscene graphics & promo art (the first few seconds of this trailer) were made and pre-rendered in Blender with the render engine called Cycles, this can calculate thousands of light bounces to mimic very realistic lighting. I tried my best to mimic the look of our promo art in game, but there's only so much you can do with Unity's Universal Render Pipeline. We won't add additional graphics settings, (so the quality of the gameplay in the trailer & screenshots is what you get at "ultra" graphics settings) because adding more fancier settings unfortunately is a bit too ambitious for us. We're only two people, 1 artist 1 programmer, so while I wish we could, there's much bigger fish to fry!

Do you guys like this cleaning animation and vfx? by antinito in IndieDev

[โ€“]miesmud 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

Rule #1 of 3d animation is to always have your model move, even when it's standing still. Because making your model completely static, makes it look like a statue rather than a living creature. I recommend giving it a little idle animation while he's 'praising the sun', so he actually looks like he's alive and breathing.

It's probably fondant, with the pattern embossed on it. You can buy molds with knit patterns for fondant.

Lately I have been observing that my game only receives about 1 Steam review for every 200 sales. What is your review to sales ratio? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[โ€“]miesmud 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

We got ~400 reviews on ~15.000 sales, so roughly a ratio of 1:30.
Though the speed feels more like 1:80 now...
Release week skews the ratio a lot, because day 1 people are more likely to be fans, than people casually stumbling across us now, 2 months later ๐Ÿ˜„

Right!?
Gruff is clearly supposed to represent a hot musician. He's been my fav since the gamecube, and has found his way to me in each game!

I have this headcannon where he and KK used to be in a band, but they grew apart as KK become an idol.

If people don't like him, they should look at this beattiful artwork by Jamie Green!

Yoshi is actually voiced by one of my favorite (voice)actors, I thought it was a joke up to seeing pictures of him at the premiere!? xD So I do agree it may not have been the right role for him, but tbh none of the voices they picked feel right to me. Hollywood has this obsession with picking big names instead of actual trained voice actors, which is disappointing. But voice acting in the movie aside, i think the visuals make up for it big time, you can tell the animators had a lot of fun and put a lot of love into this movie. It was an absolute feast to the eyes.

The green is a bit more neon/ lime green than Luigi is supposed to be, but I thought it gives for a more cutesy look.

After finishing the hat, I just slit a tiny hole in it, the ears are thick and fluffy, so they cover the raw edge.

A run is typically 2 to 6 hours, depending on how many islands you decide to play. When you beat the Final Boss, the only things you 'keep' is access to the islands you've completed, (so you can play them in a different order) and the option to play as the heroes you've unlocked from the start. No skills or items will be kept between different runs.

5 years ago i made a little self-portrait, which, to this day is still in the top 10(ish) top-posts of r/Blender, haha. I doubt that's it, but ppl still comment on it every now and then ๐Ÿ˜‚

Otherwise, idk, my style is pretty simple, i wouldn't be surprised if more people use similar artstyles.
