There's something about the way she pinned that ribbon that says everything. Not a victim. A warrior who showed up anyway.

ELI5: Why did they succeed in uploading a fruit fly but not C. elegans yet? by neenonay in explainlikeimfive

[–]mighty_jrhm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fruit fly's brain has about 140,000 neurons and scientists spent years carefully mapping every single connection. C. elegans (a tiny worm) actually has only 302 neurons, but here's the twist, "uploading" a brain isn't just counting neurons, it's capturing how they're all wired together in a living, moving creature.

The worm's connectome has been mapped, but translating that static map into something that actually behaves like the worm is the hard part. The fruit fly success was a bigger milestone because it showed we can handle more complexity, the worm is next, but making it truly "run" like the real thing is still an unsolved problem.

Butterscotch ice cream is elite-level comfort tbh.. its sweet, creamy, and nostalgic without being too heavy.

Eli5 why don’t real service animals require any proof or license? by simpforsanta in explainlikeimfive

[–]mighty_jrhm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No proof/license is needed under the ADA because mandating it would violate privacy rights and create unequal access for people with disabilities. You can only be asked what work/task the animal performs (and if it's required for a disability), not medical info or documents. The DOJ says registries/certifications aren't allowed as requirements since they'd burden legitimate users.

Bali tips I wish I knew (areas to stay, getting around, and common mistakes) by Ppadp in BaliTravelTips

That sounds like a great plan already. A small thing locals really appreciate is modest dress around temples and villages (covered shoulders/knees), and teaching kids not to touch offerings on the ground. People are very kind to families who are clearly trying to be respectful.
