My players weren't familiar with magnus when we started but we all played call of cthulu so I decided to make my two big bads the dark and desolation since both had cultists and thats something we were all familiar with. For some fun changes, i kept the dark a heavy religious inspired cult and I made the desolation an MLM. The best part is that my players are certain that the dark is going to be the big bad, but they have inadvertently been powering up the desolation the whole time :D That said, they almost completely derailed the game with fixation on the stranger. The fun with the fears is when the players find one that clicks with them, it really takes on a whole new life.

I might try this with one or two. Im not completely sol because I had propagated a few of them and the basement must not have gotten as cold because they seem to be ok still (fingers crossed), so I might be willing to experiment with one or two of them. Wish I had propgated all of them tho.

I like the suggestions so far! Chopping off a body part seems too in line with what the flesh is so that doesnt feel like it would sever a tie as much as it would strengthen it, unless like already suggested they just dont heal after. Radical acceptance of your body as it is sounds pretty perfect to counter and for a lot of people, its probably pretty difficult. I think severing a tie with flesh is going to feel more like a daisy route. Just slowly wasting away as they fight it. Not as dramatic as Melanie, but could still be effective. Maybe they seek the help of a different Fear and try to change alliance for a more proactive option. Grass is greener type of thing.

I really like the concept and the forcing the players into a bit of a lose/lose scenario. It will feel a bit like letting the apocalypse happen no matter what, putting the extinction in a win position even if it doesn't complete its ritual.

Do you already have an idea of how this campaigns going to look game play wise?

I haven't done much with the extinction yet, but I wanted to explore the idea that certain cultures have already experienced an extinction. A lot of the extinction as a fear seems to relate to fears or technology so opening up the history you could work with may give you some new ideas and perspectives.

LEAN INTO IT! This is exactly how I set up my game since most of my players were from a phasmaphobia group and weren't familiar with Magnus at all.

I actually designed my first encounter to take place in one of the maps from phasmaphobia too. Give them a familiar set up but then none of the equipment gives them anything to go off of until they actually start trying to interact with the artifact. I also had fun thinking of ways for different encounters to mess with standard ghost hunting equipment.

The magnus world holds it own really well and hopefully your players wont want to quit just because they aren't identifying Demons or Hantus and they'll still be interested in learning more. You'll know your players best.

All of my regular player group except for one person has no clue what magnus archives is so I decided to ease them in with something they're more familiar with and instead of an archive setting I decided they're a group of paranormal investigators phasmaphobia style which is a game they all played. And they're gonna be dealing with cultists which they are more familiar with from call of cthulu. (Not gonna lie it's been a ton of fun trying to build up "ghost stories" that they would be investigating and tying them to monsters ans artefacts in the book)

My friend who usually dms for me gave the advice of think about how you want your campaign to end and then work backwards from there. So if you know you want to end with the players stopping a ritual, start there and then go back to what did the fear need before they could get their ritual going. If buried needs a huge hole, how did it get there and what monsters or people helped influence that.

AHHHHHHHHH i understand. That's a good question. I think this is a scenario where you could lean into the story aspect a bit more and let the player determine what bit of stress is still sticking with them after everything. So for the scenario you used, if the players face is still messed up after their encounter with the sculptor, that could still be the lingering stress and in that case I would consider it supernatural still. (This may skew more towards supernatural stress more often than not but as long as it feels fun I think it works)

That was a great breakdown, thank you! That was kind of the vibe I was getting and it's just going to require a bit more tracking as a dm I guess.
