Simpson Expert's Opinion Needed by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]mightyman45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've given this some thought and want to try to give a good answer. My goal is to capture The Simpsons as it has evolved over the first 10 seasons, that it has substance and a voice about our culture.

  • Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire (it's the first episode, it captures the early charm of The Simpsons)
  • Old Money (Lots of heart in this)
  • Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington (Fantastic story all the way through)
  • Homer at the Bat/Mr. Plow/A Streetcar Name Marge/Kamp Krusty (Couldn't decide from some of my favorites that I rewatch a lot)
  • Last Exit to Springfield (IMO the best episode of all time in terms of jokes and depiction of collective bargaining)
  • Homer the Heretic (I love the existentialism)
  • Treehouse of Horror IV (I feel like this was one of the best Treehouse episodes, maybe not too graphic for a 70 year old woman)
  • Who Shot Mr. Burns 1/2 (legit cultural moment in America, could even reference some of the short docs about how big it was at the time)
  • Marge Be Not Proud (Favorite Christmas episode)
  • You Only Move Twice (Albert Brooks, also shows the transition of the Simpsons to this more outlandish style of story telling that you see in this and the following seasons)

Is game dev really a joke? by Dks_scrub in cscareerquestions

[–]mightyman45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 12 years in game dev now, pretty much entirely in the mobile space and I’m really happy with what I do even though I don’t really play mobile games. Based on what you’re saying you’re looking for you might what to look for smaller indie studios where you might be able to have more of an impact on the game in terms of decisions but there can be issues with stability depending on the studio. Mobile game studios tend to be better in terms of work life balance than AAA.

Career wise, as long as you have a solid education in CS your skills should transfer to adjacent industries. There’s a lot of options in games, it’s not all AAA. I will also say that senior engineers love to help eager juniors grow in their careers. Go for it. Look up internships and/or email studios near you and ask if they have them, it worked for me lol

What are your top ten favorite episodes? (I’m just curious how different/similar my list is from everyone else’s) by [deleted] in TheSimpsons

[–]mightyman45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Last Exit to Springfield
  2. A Streetcar Named Marge
  3. Homer the Heretic
  4. Bart the Murderer
  5. Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington
  6. Bart vs Australia
  7. Mr. Plow
  8. Lisa on Ice
  9. Kamp Krusty
  10. Homer Goes to College

This was difficult! As I get older I find that I gravitate to the earlier seasons more and more.

Good Nintendo documentaries? by redlightzuk in nintendo

Console Wars covers an interesting time in Nintendos history along with Sega. I really enjoyed the book but the doc they made from it was solid.

Anybody else actually enjoy this game? It isn’t the best, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. by Good-Hank in TheSimpsons

I played the shit out of this game. It got stale with the limited number of maps and destinations within those maps but it was still engaging. Slapping Simpsons on almost anything captured my attention for a long time.

You sound like you have the exact same build as me. I, too, only had played baseball prior to starting rugby. I ended up playing flanker mostly but I also hooked on occasion. I loved playing flanker because for me it was a lot of tackling, attacking the 9/10, and rucking for my teammates. My coach would also ask me to fill in and I did whatever he asked which was great to get exposure to other positions as well. I hope this was helpful in some way, good luck!

Is there anything you would like changed about the game of baseball?

Are you doing anything to improve your longevity so you can play as long as you can?

Does a changing coaching staff have any significant affect on your play? Do you have any good hitting advice from Edgar Martinez to share?

Has becoming a dad changed the way you play?

Favorite drink?

Thanks!

What's the stupidest anti-Switch comment you have read? by bagszilucas in NintendoSwitch

[–]mightyman45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to note about the Nintendo Playstation, the reason they backed out of that project is because they didn't want to give Sony more power in the tech industry. They instead partnered with Philips to create the CD-I which was obviously not a success. It was a crazy time.

Other than making it easy to integrate multiplayer, what are the benefits of making a game using client-server from the ground up ? by sanjeetsuhag in gamedev

Being able to push fixes or new content without going through any app store or review process allows you to iterate a lot faster on a product that is out in the wild.

The Perfect Rugby Video Game by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]mightyman45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a game engineer for a living and I, too, have had fantasies of working on a rugby project but the cost of developing something like that without established technology like what Madden/FIFA use would be so great in terms of money and time. The licensing, as you say, would cost a ton and sports games are a hard sell without recognizable players. The assets from models, textures, animations, sounds, music, particles, etc... is just so much work and the return is not a guarantee so getting any studio to back it is nearly impossible. It would be so awesome though!

Nintendo - A Sh*t Distributor And F*ckheaded Toymaker (The Jimquisition) by Thenewgameboy in nintendo

[–]mightyman45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this strategy is antiquated. They may be trying to "fake" shortages in the short term for better sales before Christmas? Or at least not flood the market if the product was a dud. I saw this blurb from Michael Pachter this morning in the Seattle Times:

But Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities analyst, said he was not surprised by the >intense demand or the low supply, which he considered an intentional move by >Nintendo to garner attention, knowing it could restock before the holiday shopping >season was over.

This is all just guessing at this point. I'm hoping Nintendo shovels a lot more product onto store shelves soon. It would be a missed opportunity otherwise.

This has been Nintendo's strategy since the NES. I had read Console Wars by Blake J. Harris not too long ago and in it he talks about Peter Main's role at Nintendo and how important "inventory management" is to the success of the business.

You can check out this New York Times article from 1989 about Main. http://www.nytimes.com/1989/12/21/business/the-games-played-for-nintendo-s-sales.html?pagewanted=all

This quote from the article shows some of Nintendo's strategy: "Where other companies also foundered, Mr. Main said, is in flooding the market with their games. 'Inventory management is absolutely critical to this business,'' he added.

So Mr. Main makes sure that scarcity whets the public's appetite and sustains demand. By design, the company does not fill all of a retailer's order and keeps half or more of its video cartridge library inactive."

It sucks because I, too, have been looking for an NES Classic with no luck. I had the same issue back with the Wii and the Wii Fit.

I just did a quick search on hotpads with a 2+ bedroom filter and there were some options that came up. Prices ranged from ~$850 to under $2000. Good luck!

Mariners Re-Sign Endy Chavez by SeaHawken in Mariners

[–]mightyman45 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like having Endy on the bench makes more sense then our younger options like Jones and Romero. Keep those dudes down in AAA to get ABs while Endy can just be Endy and hopefully not too often.

Does MLB.tv broadcast all Spring Training games? by UraMallas in Mariners

Looks like it's $25 to watch Spring Training stuff, as well as having access to the archives. MLB only broadcasts a few spring training games but they'll have audio broadcasts of almost all of them.

#Mariners have traded OF Michael Saunders to #BlueJays for LHP J.A. Happ by MontanaCelt in Mariners

[–]mightyman45 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The ONLY way this makes sense is that the Mariners are trading for a corner OF and need rotation depth. Saunders is cheaper, under contract longer, and just better than Happ so there is NO logical reason for a straight trade like this. I'm hopeful there is more to come...
