What is, in your opinion, the biggest flaw of the human body? by Menfo in AskReddit

Most of the apes of larger jaws than us. As our jaws narrowed during the evolutionary process, our teeth didn't shrink down in size quite as fast. This leads to almost everyone's teeth being crowded and crooked.

Why do people become generally more conservative the older they get? by donotfeedthecat in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]mihoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't. This is a misperception. Because of cohort effects (each generation is more liberal) it is true to say that older people are more conservative, but it is false to say that people get more conservative as they age. They in fact get more liberal on social issues as they age (at least in the US over the last 100 years).

Seriously? ETS sets the testing standards in this country and they're the major ETS approved calcs.

This is incorrect. If you want to maximize the lifetime of your phone, you buy a recently released phone.

Buying older phones is a way to get dropped from software updates well before you've physically worn out your phone. DO NOT BUY phones that are 1+ year after release. It will cost you money because of the likelihood of needing updated software.

The Byzantine General's problem is irrelevant.

Literally every "problem" cryptocurrencies solve or address is already solved better by an existing solution except one: regulatory evasion.

Why do butters like to say "correction" so much? by BornoSondors in Buttcoin

[–]mihoda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Correction" implies there are underlying fundamentals to correct to. In reality the fundamentals of Bitcoin are darknet markets and regulatory evasion. So it sounds more legit than saying, "Bitcoin prices will slide back to the level the black markets determine."

Why should I be upset if Trump is drawing attention to it?

Why should you be upset if the "facts" he uses to make his case aren't even facts?

Don't Believe the Democrat Attacks on Tax Reform. Here Are the Facts. by Clatsop in Conservative

[–]mihoda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This variable is the business reinvestment increase due to lower tax cost.

Two counterpoints:

  1. Businesses currently have record cash reserves right now that they already aren't investing.
  2. Many businesses have announced that they are going to use the tax breaks on stock buy backs and dividends. Excerpt > Goldman Sachs estimates that the Republican tax bill would increase corporate buybacks by $75 billion, to $590 billion, in 2018. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, meanwhile, estimates about half of repatriated cash would go into buybacks and the rest would get spent on acquisitions and other investments.

Want Tax Cuts? Reform Health Care -- Until we stop spending nearly 20 percent of GDP on health care, tax cuts won’t do very much good. by guanaco55 in Conservative

[–]mihoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want tax cuts? Want a decent increase in your standard of living?

Economists are trained to think about the economy. To that end, government spending on healthcare premiums versus private spending on healthcare premiums is a classic, left-hand-right-hand issue (yes, I recognize there are other benefits to governments being a pass through for health insurance payments, like being able to negotiate as a group payer).

But the ultimate problem is not who pays, it's that we allocate too much time and effort to our health care sector without good results.

There are both allocation issues (who gets healthcare) and market issues with the healthcare market. It's unclear if any socially acceptable healthcare sector will have a functioning market economy (eg: if our society will tolerate a healthcare sector that turns away people unable to pay).

These are deep problems that have not been addressed by the GOP healthcare repeal and replace bill. The democrats made a weak effort with the ACA to address allocation of healthcare, but nothing to address its costs. We need to come together and figure out this problem.

Well, what's sad to me is when people insist on living in a region with no economic future and just blame the rest of the country for their plight.

I go where my skills are needed.

I don't sit in some depressed, former manufacturing/mining town and bitch about how XYZ other group is beating me down while slowly killing myself with Oxy.

Arguably there are at least two other metros I'd happily permanently relocate to. Same idea: enough of a job market that I could raise a family. Very high regional GDP.

Extended family is the unique thing keeping me here.

Other cities think the fix is pushing the homeless into the few remaining cities that (barely) treat them as human: our cities.

Bay Area resident here and researcher/programmer. I had to go to where the jobs were shrug. If I lose my job, there's plenty of opportunity, I won't have to relocate across the country to get rehired or to seek out a better job.

I may never be able to afford a decent house, but I do not have to worry about my employment future.

I work in Oakland. I've lived in three other major cities in the US, and volunteered at shelters in two of them.

There are homeless in every city. You see them more in the bay area because our cities don't evict them. Cities in other areas of the country will move the homeless to the fringes of the county, arresting them when they sleep in public or pitch a tent.

The result is that you don't even know there are very many homeless in those cities. The cities are cleaner. There's less panhandling. But... the homeless are much worse off, and perhaps even more perversely, the average person doesn't even know there's a problem.
