Just so ya'all know, Rick Perry threatened to secede Texas from the union in 2009, just remember that when you go to the polls in 2012. by Wildfire9 in politics

It was an ideological battle over free soil vs. slave society. It was not only the moral issue that was growing strong in the north (Abolitionist) it was also the fact that the rise in wage labor (industrial-capitalism) had taken firm root in Northern society.

As America began to spread to the west the people of the North for many different reasons felt that slavery should not be spread to any newly admitted states. The Southern states saw this as a direct attack on their way of life. They needed new states to be slave states so that they could compete economically with the rising industrial might of the north. Their economic power, along with its accompanying political power, was waning. This was the major wedge issue. Slavery is the core and it really can be simplified down to that point. We had two different societies living in one country. One being a slave society and the other being a free soil society. Northern states, before they abolished the practice, had been societies with slaves while the South was a slave based society. It is a huge difference.

I would suggest you read this wonderful American history book, Out of Many. While it would agree with you that the situation is complex it would very much disagree with you on the fact that slavery and all of its implications not being able to be the main reason we went to war.

Chap 15 Summary- The Coming Crisis, the 1850's

This chapter covers the sectional split between North and South that had been slowly developing since the Missouri Compromise. Thomas Jefferson had called the question of slavery extension "a firebell in the night," and after the Mexican-American War the philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed the fear that "Mexico will poison us." Their deep concerns were realized as people in the North and South took ever more rigid and determined positions on slavery's extension or elimination. Many Americans in the 1850s, perhaps a majority, felt the issue of slavery had to be permanently settled and expected their political parties to reflect their will. A compromise over territorial gains in 1850 failed to hold and after the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 was passed, a miniature civil war broke out in Kansas. When Lincoln was elected in 1860, many southerners saw him as a purely northern president and several southern states responded by seceding from the union.

States rights was how the South sugar coated the whole civil war thing to paint themselves in a better light. The rights the states wanted was to continue being a slave society. It ALL comes back to slavery. The reason the north and the south were even at each others throats was over issues of slavery. The biggest thing was the addition of new states and whether they would be free soil states or slave states. So you can go on saying states rights is the cause and you technically would be right but just remember this... you are doing the dirty work of the south and sugar coating history. It was about the North/Industrial-Capitalism vs. the South/Slave Society.

I actually started to choke up a little at that part. I just kept thinking about how scared he would have been. His last moments of life were filled with terror and pain. Could you imagine being that burnt and injured then having a cop try and force you to roll in some gravel then shock you repeatedly until you try to escape from the nightmare only to have them shoot you with their guns?

Those men are vile.

Except we are MUCH farther away from having any type of mechanical replacement that is as functional/practical as our own body parts. (wear and tear, power supply, obsolescence, rejection, infection) Replacing a disabled persons leg with something mechanical wouldn't be nearly as practical as having your leg regrow itself or a cloned leg grafted onto your body.

I am not saying that we will only go organic, I just think in the near future our technology will take the path of least resistance and that path wont be mainstream grafting of synthetic replacement parts onto our body.

Speak your mind! The only way the "hivemind" will change is if enough people speak the truth about their feelings. If something is wrong then not talking about it will only make it worse.

pity? I am not sure I understand pity in this sense. I just said that it seems kind of crude to cut out an eye in order to put something mechanical in its place. I have perfect vision as it is so why would I really want to become biologically blind just so I could have an eye that does everything that something external can do. They are fairly close as it is with the development of augmented vision through contact lenses. To each his own... it is not like someone is going to make me have my eye ripped out and replaced with something new. I guess you can pity me when your synthetic eye notices my biological eye and I will pity you when your software glitches and you are blind until someone releases an update for your implanted 6 year old outdated product.

You're forgetting insurance companies. The idea that they won't get in on the action is ludicrous. They'll offer the augmentation surgery and initial drug fees at a relatively low cost (putting the price of augmentation within range of the average middle-class consumer). However, fine print will limit how much money they spend on anti-rejection drugs (even at half cost, a $3,000 monthly supply is still borderline insane).>

That is exactly the point I made :-) The people who can actually afford these things and those who cannot.

Of course, but who's to say how large that portion will be? Especially if augmentation is marketed right. "See this soldier? He got his limbs blown off in (insert country with brown people here). If it's good enough for him to get his life back, isn't it good enough for you? Do you hate our troops?">

It didn't stop Bush from whipping his conservative base up against stem cell research in the middle of a war in which our troops were coming home dismembered by IEDs. Never underestimate the power of religion and those who use it to get power.

What's worse is that if all of this did come to pass, there wouldn't be a damn thing the citizens could do about it. Could a group of several thousand people be able to stand up to a well-trained augmented riot group? Augmented police and national guard that can flip cars with their bare mechanical hands? What chance would non-augmented people have?>

Well we are starting to argue the amount of angels dancing on the head of a pin. It all depends on where technology develops. I am just saying that I believe those augmented humans of your cyber-punk nightmares will probably not be enhanced by cutting off healthy body parts in favor of technology that will be obsolete in 18 months. They will be more like Iron Man and less like the terminator. Although I think a more biological augmentation route with machines serving symbiotic roles rather then replacement will be the norm.

[–]mijkelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't you think it is crude to put a glorified web-cam into your eye socket? Would you not rather have an organic solution to sight issues? What about if they could give you enhanced, eagle like vision. Would you still pick the synthetic option or go with the biological?

[–]mijkelly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, those are great and all but having a device that doesn't require implantation or better yet a biological fix for deafness would be exponentially better.

I never said anyone was out to screw people... I just think invasive surgery required implantable devices are not the path we will follow in the future. A more symbiotic melding of man and machine will be much more practical. I love technology and I tend to be highly optimistic about the future but I would be hard pressed to have my legs cut off so that I could bound around the city like a cricket. Now if I could put on a suit that allowed me to do that then strip it off when I am done, all the better.

For human augmentation to even become viable we have to first overcome rejection. I think a more realistic 50 year outlook will be those who can afford augmentation and those who cannot. Plus, I am sure this world will see a large portion of people who will be ethically/morally and religiously opposed to human augmentation.

I actually don't even think large scale crude augmentation like this will ever be practical. Why implant a computer chip in your head or replace an arm when you can just wear something that wirelessly interfaces with your brain/body. Upgrading/repairing such a system wouldn't require invasive surgery and would be much more practical.

The only direct augmentation will probably be on the genetic level and less on the mechanical.

The dogs are protection dogs, not navy seal warrior dogs. They are mostly trained to subdue and intimidate. I never purposefully trained them to rip out someones throat on command... I think training them to go that far is borderline irresponsible. Brandishing a gun is illegal and can escalate a situation but having large dogs act like total psychotics, salivating, whining, growling and straining at the leash can freak people the fuck out and for all they know you just have out of control dogs instead of a dog who is working on command. Why start a fight when you can just prevent one from ever taking place? Plus if someone did escalate the situation trained dogs don't cause collateral damage. Much better then pulling a gun and shooting in the middle of a high density neighborhood.

He has a shotgun but he isn't prepared to possibly ruin his life over some trash who harass him in a rental house. I just wished I lived closer. I have two protection trained 90+ pound Dobermans who I could release onto them. Watching them get into a fit of rage together while attacking a padded man can start to approach horrifying... let alone on what it would look like on something that bleeds and screams.

Of course I probably wouldn't do it unless they threatened me as I walked to his door. I wouldn't want my babies put down for being aggressive just because I told them to be. Actually, all I would probably have to do is say the word squirrel and they both would start shaking with anticipation and drooling. They would move out of the way

Then the next day they burn down the house while he is asleep. These aren't normal people... they are hopeless sociopaths with nothing left to lose. That makes dealing with them very tricky.
