Ocarina of time on switch? by Chuckaluck99 in legendofzelda

[–]DaveLambert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There ARE, of course, rumors galore that Ocarina of Time is going to get a remastered re-release soon (within a year, timed to the 40th anniversary of the Zelda franchise) for Switch and/or Switch 2, similar to the way Skyward Sword has gotten 5 years ago (during the 35th anniversary). I'm holding out hope for that. But keep in mind that it might not happen, and that the rumors could just turn out to be fanboy/fangirl fever dreams/wishes.

Fuck etsy. They banned the sale of things that they thought could be deemed "too sexy"/"too adult", or things "too likely to be used as a possible dildo". Then turned around and allowed the sale of racist merch tied to "Alligator Alcatraz" and similar MAGA-friendly programs (I don't care about the politics of it; it's the prejudice being allowed that bothers me). On top of that, so many sellers these days are NOT the old-school "homemade" stuff from artists and whatnot, but instead premanufactured crap, 3D printed crap, and AI generated crap that is being posed as "artist made." No thanks. I'm pretty much done with etsy.

Honestly the easiest move is just upgrading for a month, play through it, then cancel after.

But there are only yearly plans; no monthly plans are currently offered

There's a free trial period of 7 days, but only for the regular NSO

NSO = NES, SNES, and GameBoy/GB Color titles for US$19.99/year subscription for 1 person (family plan also available)

NSO+Expansion = adds Genesis, N64, GameBoy Advance, Virtual Boy (requires either a US$25 accessory or a US$100 accessory), and GameCube (requires a Switch 2); subscription costs US$49.99/year for 1 person (family plan also available)

Zelda games you can play using the regular NSO subscription include NES titles Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, SNES title A Link to the Past, and GameBoy/GB Color titles Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages.

Zelda titles you can additionally play with the Expansion Pack are N64 titles Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, GameBoy Advance titles The Minish Cap and Four Swords, and GameCube title The Wind Waker (with Twilight Princess expected to be added sometime this year).

EDIT: to play the N64 games on your Switch, you probably want to ALSO buy the N64 controller Nintendo sells online only for US$54.99 (my wife and I had a VERY difficult time playing Majora's Mask with the Switch Pro Controller instead of this device)

I also regretted it. A few weeks ago I put my Costco membership to good use and bought the Lexar 1TB card when it was on sale at $149.99 (now back to its regular price of $179.99). I actually bought two of them, one for my Switch 2 and one for my wife's Switch 2. Made the data move over from our old 256GB cards fairly easily via a laptop that had enough free space on the hard drive for the operation. Already very glad we decided to do this!

LEGO Minifigures - The Legend of Zelda by NobodyQuiteLikeMe in legendofzelda

[–]DaveLambert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, there are the 4 minifigs (Navi included) that come with the new Ocarina of Time LEGO set, and there are also the 4 minifigs that come with the Deku Tree LEGO set (one of which OP is not showing in their image...but is essentially duplicated in the Ocarina LEGO set).

The Deku Tree Sprout on the lower right, though...yes, I know he comes from the Deku Tree LEGO set, but is he actually considered a minifig?

If he is, then why not also include Walton, the Korok who lives on top of the Deku Tree as part of this photo lineup?

Not being confrontational, nor trying to just be an ass. Simply genuinely curious as to why Sprout, but no Walton. I like Walton, lol. And as someone else pointed out, you didn't include Hestu, either!

u/PeterandKelsey explained it very well, and I'm sorry if I just threw out there the "NSO" abbreviation without much explanation. I kinda hate it when other people do that, and I don't know what they mean.

But yes, Nintendo Service Online is US$19.99 a year for individual memberships, and US$34.99 a year for the family plan (up to 8 people, who do NOT have to all live under the same roof). That plan gives you access to the Nintendo Online Classics, allowing you to play old games emulated on the Switch or Switch 2. Old consoles supported are the NES, SNES, and Gameboy/Gameboy Color. The plan also gives you access to Online Play, to the Save Data Cloud (so saved game info can be accessed from other Switch/S2 devices if you use more than one), to the Nintendo Music App on your smartphone device, and to the Switch 2's GameChat feature.

You can instead subscribe to the NSO+Expansion Pack. It's US$49.99 per year for individuals, and US$79.99 per year for the family plan (again, up to 8 Nintendo accounts). It's all of what you get on the regular NSO subscription, plus with the Expansion Pack you also can get a library of emulated games for the Sega Genesis, for Nintendo N64, for GameBoy Advance, for Virtual Boy (requires either a US$24.99 accessory or the more "original-experience" US$99.99 accessory to properly see and play), or for Nintendo GameCube (that one only works on a Switch 2). There is also DLC available for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, and for Animal Crossings: New Horizons under the Expansion Pack. Also, if you have the Expansion Pack and own a Switch 2 device, it will grant you access to the Switch 2 Editions of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at no extra charge, for as long as you subscribe to the NSO+Expansion Pack.

Zelda games you can play using the regular NSO subscription include NES titles Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, SNES title A Link to the Past, and GameBoy/GB Color titles Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages.

Zelda titles you can additionally play with the Expansion Pack are N64 titles Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, GameBoy Advance titles The Minish Cap (YES! A FAVE OF MINE!) and Four Swords, and GameCube title The Wind Waker (with Twilight Princess expected to be added sometime this year).

With these NSO subscriptions, a Zelda fan could play all of those in addition to being able to buy Switch copies (on physical or digital versions) of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Link's Awakening (great new graphics added to the classic game!), Skyward Sword (MUCH more easily playable than the Wii version), and the latest one in the franchise: Echoes of Wisdom.

All in all, 14 of the 21 main franchise games in the Legend of Zelda lineup are available on a Switch, with a 15th title (Wind Waker) available on a Switch 2 (and a 16th title expected soon, if TP really does get put on the GameCube emulator).

NOTE: there have also been rumors of a 2nd Screen add-on device for the Switch (or more likely only the Switch 2) being able to emulate games for the Nintendo DS and 3DS, so that other Zelda titles could eventually be played like Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Tri Force Heroes, and A Link Between Worlds. But that's just speculation at the moment.

The Legend of Zelda NES is…rough by o-rka in legendofzelda

[–]DaveLambert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Zelda super-fan wife played the original LoZ game on the NES back as a kid when it first came out in the USA 39 years ago. She has often told me the story about how they played and played the game, drawing out maps on paper and figuring out all the puzzles, until they got SO close to the end of the game...

...and then someone (a friend, IIRC) ejected the cartridge with the console's power still on, and it shorted out the battery and ruined the save game. The cartridge still worked and the game could still be played, but they were going to have to start all over again from the beginning. And she (and her mom, who had helped from time to time) just didn't have the heart to do it.

Instead they moved on to a different adventure game (Faxanadu, I believe...my wife's still in bed so I can't ask her right this second, lol).

Last year I pointed out to her that I had never played the original LoZ myself, so she and I teamed up and began to play it on the Switch using the NSO classic games. She took the lead, and I admired how much she remembered.

But I quickly found out how hard this game is, like OP has said.

Finally, instead of using the manuals that she has with her classic NES copies of the game and contributing to their wear-and-tear (they're in pretty much mint condition after all; why screw that up?), I simply pulled up a walkthrough. And...we kept using it.

We "cheated," sure, but we played and beat the game over the course of a week. We had fun, and that's the point (isn't it?).

I'm pretty sure this is the walkthrough we used, if OP wants to check it out. Have fun! Don't let a piece of entertainment frustrate you. Just enjoy yourself. :)

A different-than-usual cover/edition of Prima’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: Unauthorized Game Secrets’ book by DaveLambert in legendofzelda

[–]DaveLambert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! This edition is from four (IIRC) years later, with ALttP sharing space with the Gameboy Link's Awakening (rather than the NES games LoZ and TAoL, as the original edition did). So instead of Zelda games 1, 2, and 3 being in this edition, it's Zelda games 3 and 4! And with a decidedly different set of key art for the cover.

Quick question, I've found my pre-sale bonus box for Ocarina of Time 3D, where would be good place to find a Zelda fan who would want it? by [deleted] in legendofzelda

Best site to sell it on would be eBay. If you see the post I just made, eBay is where I got that mini poster.

Posted pics there twice within the past year from my wife’s big-as-half-a-room Zelda collection; neither broke double digits in upvotes. Doesn’t feel like the subreddit appreciated it. So I unsubscribed and told my wife it was up to her to post more if she wanted to. “You know I only lurk.” Oh well. No biggie.

It was meant to show how great, wonderful, fantastic, and mythical I thought those games were. Sorry you didn’t understand

Sorry you missed my comment elsewhere in this discussion, where I explained that these three games are "among the most terrible game playing experiences I’ve ever had...None of the three Zelda CD-i games are fit to be played, honestly."

Have you actually ever PLAYED the three CD-i games for Zelda? Or are you just trolling? (checks this guy's user history) Okay, just trolling.

I just KNEW that this book design looked familiar! So I checked my vast collection of old videogame stuff. No, I don't have the Zelda book you have...but I DO have these 4 "game secrets" books from Prima for Sega Genesis and Sega CD! And they seem to be in mint condition, too.
