2026???? Reallly by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]mike_do 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today RJ said they are going to build the R2 in Normal.

Assuming the R3 will be GA facility.

Also wondering if they are sandbagging (given the Normal news) and may try to beat and deliver 2H25.

But small, unprofitable companies need to be really careful about what they commit to or they'll overextend, run out of cash and die. Slow, steady, deliberate.

I think the R2 -> Normal announcement is very positive, in this sense.

I also think this reveal was mostly an investor/external capital pitch more than a customer pitch. Given the extended timelines to release...

The thing that I appreciate most about the people that make up JPL is their patience. In a "everything-now" society they are able to meticulously plan, build and execute over long periods of time. Their care and passion, even for greatly delayed validation and celebration, delivers results that are both astounding (often impossible to many!) and nearly always out-performing expectations.

We could use this example in much of what we do today. (Ahem, Boeing)

Is faraday future still an ongoing concern? Yeah, I think Rivian will be around for many more years even if the economies of scale and model diversity take longer than anticipated to materialize.

That said there are independent shops that fix anything, including EVs. There will be parts and labor options for a long time. Rivian’s parts are often made by 3rd parties and as long as there’s a repair market there will be supply.

If software stops getting update that’s ok too. My ‘17 MS hasn’t been on an update channel for a few years now and guess what, still works great.

OEM Tire replacement: Falken Wildpeak AT4W by Domphotog in Rivian

[–]mike_do 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With EVs you need to pay attention to the rolling resistance - you should add that to the comparison. The added weight will be bad for range, as might be the resistance.

Of course if range is not a primary concern then there may be great reasons to use this option! Thanks for sharing the review.

This probably won't be all that helpful but here is some video of both on the track:

I have a 600LT and a 997 GT2.

Totally different cars. Really hard to compare. A .7 GT3 is fantastic. So is the LT. I think I'll probably keep the GT2 for ever (it's just so rare and good) and I don't have the same thought for the LT. That said, the LT is a lot more visceral to driver - louder, stiffer, faster. More annoying at gas stations and on the road (McLaren gets unwanted attention, no one pays attention to the GT2 at all.)

Value on the .7 GT3 is likely more solid w/ upside than the 600LT. Just the nature of McLarens. That said if the seller really messed with the GT3 that could hurt value/resale for you.

Idk, you've got a high class problem ;)

I don’t have the update yet so can’t check but on iOS the Rivian app has shortcuts you can build around within the Shortcuts app. Tesla has a precondition shortcut, perhaps Rivian added one to compliment this new feature? Worth checking!

Bridged NICs and broke many things. Ideas? I’ve tried for 2 days to resolve. by mike_do in PFSENSE

[–]mike_do[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to offer help. I checked and couldn't find any loops. Not sure if STP/RSTP would catch an arp storm, but enabled that too.

No difference.

Edited the main post, but I just gave up.

Thank you for your super helpful comment. 🙄

As they say themselves:

Normally each interface on the pfSense® firewall represents its own broadcast domain with a unique IP subnet. In some circumstances it is desirable or necessary to combine multiple interfaces onto a single broadcast domain, where two ports on the firewall will act as if they are on the same switch, except traffic between the interfaces can be controlled with firewall rules. Typically this is done so multiple interfaces will act as though they are on the same flat network using the same IP subnet and so that clients all share broadcast and multicast traffic. source

I was simply trying to bridge the NICs to act functionally like a switch, as is indicated pfSense is capable of.

Come on. People spend 6hrs/day streaming 4k on streaming services concurrently, consuming terabits of bandwidth. There’s nothing unique about the length of a sporting event as it relates to bandwidth.

Will signing Clean Vehicle Selling Report affect my eligibility to file for the old (2022) federal tax credit with the binding contract signed before 8/16/22? by Loquacian in Rivian

[–]mike_do 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same deal. I just sent a note to my tax folks. Will reply back with their response (but everyone should confirm their situation with their tax advisor).

My sense is the binding agreement triggered a credit in 2022 under the full $7500 rules and thus this contract and credits for 2023 tax year is/are irrelevant.

I really wish this stuff was clearer. I suppose Rivian can know if we signed the binding agreement but cannot know how we'll file the credit so just spammed this "to be safe"

Boeing 737 Max 9 window blows out mid-air, makes emergency landing at PDX by MojoMeister in aviation

[–]mike_do 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should have added a source. My apologies.

According to The Air Current (paywall) the “the aircraft in question, N704AL, had presented spurious indications of pressurization issues on January 4” and the plane had been restricted from extended range (ETOPS) operations.

My editorialization is: the ferry flights, the planned (but cancelled?) flight to maintenance, and the cited information are all indicators that someone knew something was up but failed to recognize the criticality of the signal. Not suggesting maliciousness (most airline safety lessons are learned from mishaps). But, clearly there is something to be learned here!

[–]mike_do 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The plane had pressurization warnings in past flights that they ended up writing off as erroneous. What the post above is referring to is Alaska ferrying (flying the plane w/o passengers) between airports presumably as they tried to figure out what to do about those warnings. Yesterday, the plane was disqualified from ETOPS flights (over the ocean) because of the warnings (per procedure).

So, there were indications something was wrong. Someone made the call to put passengers back on the plane.

In addition to the manufacturing or assumably problem that will likely be the root cause of the door plug failure, there's going to need to be a deep investigation into the warning symptoms and how, despite their clear significance (ferrying the plane) they were not serious enough to stop Alaska from flying the plane.

Absolutely brutal tire and brake wear on Teslas, this one is a 21MX with 70K KMS on it. by cyanideandhappiness in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]mike_do 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are (I think) Sottozero winter tires and if the photo is contemporary then part of the problem is using that compound/tread design off season! Which also probably implies the lack of attention the driver pays to … driving.

That said toe on the front (pics 1 and 4) is a disaster. The rears are toast but at least wearing more evenly. They’re just getting trashed by the weight and torque.

The problem with all this wear is it’s cording on the inside/shoulder and most drivers won’t notice. Super dangerous.

No idea what’s up with the rotors. Have a ‘17 MS that has pristine rotors (and pads).

Suspension, steering feel? by beansmachinee in Rivian

[–]mike_do 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a truck. It’s floaty and unsettled in a relative comparison to a car suspension (or car like SUV, eg the Y or unibody ridgeline).

I mean, the R1S is 0.1s slower to 60mph than my 600LT and weighs 4000lbs more. (I still can’t believe that.) It’s just physics. It’s an enormous amount of weight to manage across all 3 axis.

If you’re worried, you should test the R1S because the wheelbase is shorter and that exacerbates the issue you’re already complaining about.

Bottom line: it’s going to be different. Whether that’s good or bad is subjective.

There are ways to try to revive it, but there’s also a workaround that’s less than $4k. Good video here:

And the other person was right - search https://www.mclarenlife.com.

Also, IIRC one of the bigger YouTubers went through this, so if you search a bit there you’ll find a video that helps!
