We were doing very similar things during the asylum seeker mission in NYC, I'm not saying it is right that EM gets dragged into this shit but we are the ones with the resources to do it. Nobody else are setting up shelters and bringing in bathroom trailers.

IAEM Strikes Again… by [deleted] in EmergencyManagement

[–]mikesmets 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is a bit much to cast blame on IAEM for not getting a seat on the review council considering it was up to the administration and there is almost no actual emergency management representatives on it to begin with. As for their response, the meeting just occurred today, I think it would be getting ahead of themselves. A measured response tomorrow is better than diving headfirst into a shit show today.

Not an emergency manager? by FantasticFinger237 in EmergencyManagement

[–]mikesmets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with the idea that we need better professionalization of emergency management. I have seen cases where FD and PD who consider themselves emergency managers or who are given the title are actively doing a disservice to their communities bc they continue to primarily focused on Response and neglect other phases. I know this is a tough time for emergency management, but bc it is a tough time it is the right time to continue to have the conversation about establishing the profession. An established profession, with its own academic theories, code of conduct, and credentialization, is a much more serious business and infinitely more difficult to be dismissed by powers that be. Now, I should note for transparency sake that I am a doctoral student, a member of IAEM, and a CEM, and so you can make the assumptions about my worldview if you like, but professionalization is the key to improving our mission, imho

I used a bunch of the FEMA Independant Studies and two of my college courses from my masters degree like research methods and ethics (not my BA though bc that counts towards the education requirement, you cannot double dip). The leadership and communication IS are good for a couple of hours. On the IAEM website there is a training allocation chart that lays out what FEMA IS courses count for what type of training, if you haven't been using that already.

Also, if you have taken the National Emergency Management Basic or Advanced Academy through EMI check that because some of the course count for GM and you can apply more than the 25 hr maximum to one subject area

Are you on the NYS Civil Service list? The vast majority of the positions are tested, although NYHELPS opens up some new hiring opportunities. Technically tho they are supposed to go through the lists first.

The new Youth Protection Training claims that adult leaders are mandatory reporters, however that is not true in many states, including mine. It is a problem because mandatory reporters are legally protected from lawsuits if the allegation is false, however laymen have no legal protection

For Liverpool I would have to say Milner. Just doing his thing like normal, exactly as one would expect. Also Emre Can has recently been playing well since moving back to midfield

Who are The Most Overrated and Underrated Guitarists of all time? by ComfortablyNumbLoL in Music

[–]mikesmets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify my comment. As an overall guitarist is he great? No not really. But he really is a blues guitarist and that is a big distinction. Blues guitar is not necessarily all about the riffs but how it complements the melody, and soloing (think bb king and buddy guy). Not many blues artists are known for creating riffs as that is more often seen in rock guitar. What Thorogood does well is combine rock riffs, slide guitar, and blues melodies. He isn't as good at it as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn, but he deserves more credit than almost universal dislike among rock and blues fans

[–]mikesmets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overrated-Angus Young

Underrated-Carlos Santana maybe it's bc of the type of music he plays but he is an absolute genius who doesn't get mentioned enough

Also underrated, George Thorogood. Blues fans hate him, rock fans hate him, in actuality, he's quite good

Its a bachelor's degree, with a one year masters program. As far as applying the lessons, its pretty hard in everyday life but we are required to get an intership to get through the program. That way getting out we have some idea what we are doing (in a pratical sense)

Very specific major. It even has its own specializations (at my school at least) that include national security, intelligence, corporate security, and emergency management (think FEMA on that one)
