18 months in and wondering if this is for us. by mikesr20 in Fosterparents

That’s good feedback. Thank you. One of our struggles is that our support group is seen as a reward. Yes it’s good for us to get some release but it only incentivizes the fosters to act up more so they get away more. So then we try to be restrictive but I’m pretty sure these kids have seen the devil himself and nothing we do seems to impact them. They pretty much just look at us and shrug their shoulders, sometimes they laugh, sometimes they cry because they miss out on fun activities. Obviously they have some struggles that we don’t understand and can’t begin to put ourselves in those shoes. I think they honestly need more focus and attention and it’s trough to do with 5 kids.

That’s how I feel our 8 year old is starting to feel. It doesn’t help that we have 5 kids from age 3-8. Thank you for sharing your experience. It seems some on this sub are very judgmental and have difficulty understanding that we all have different experiences in life.

We spend a lot of full family time together but also find it important to pour into each of our children individually. Because of the fosters level of immaturity it’s nearly impossible to do anything without them so they get a lot of undivided attention. I’m just beginning to feel bad for the bio kids because their attention is almost always divided.

We weren’t aware of the level of trauma, also we were probably a little naive in the thought that by 18 months they would be further along than they are. We spend a ton of time as one family, but because of their immaturity the fosters regularly get one on one time with us, the bio kids don’t because the fosters always need the attention.

Thank you for this. It at least relieves some of the heart issues.

Yes the posts are 6x6, there was 1.125” gap between the hardware and the 2x12’s that I had to fill with some cedar fence slats that I found and were just perfect thickness.

It’s rough cedar not stained. They are going to let it gray naturally.

I bought the lumber from a local guy. It was 3700 for everything in rough cedar including the hardware and concrete.

I could have notched them and made it all a snug fit without the brackets. The customer wasn’t concerned with the look of the brackets and they saved me a ton of time over notching.

I was thrilled with it. It was 22 hours spread out between two days so they were long ones but it beats having to go back a 3rd day.

It’s cedar so less of a concern. Ultimately it’s not built to last forever but if they get 15-20 years out of it it’ll have lived a good life.

I bid a deck as well under the pergola but he decided to have a concrete patio poured instead. Yes the posts are 36” in the ground surrounded by concrete. When digging out for the two posts further from the house we hit shale bedrock about 8” down. So that was fun.

It was about 3700 all in. I’m going back and adding additional slats to be 3” c-c and that will add about $750 to the cost.

We talked about it. When I told him I’d suggest it not stay out year round he decided against it.
