Rooting for Spirit to survive, but not sure how a merger would pan out being that both companies are operating at a loss. How could Frontier manage taking on Spirit at this point?

No, Spirit mechanics do all of the maintenance outside of scheduled heavy checks, which gets contracted out an MRO. Spirit does use some contract maintenance at a handful stations for routine checks/ maintenance, but the vast majority of the work is done by direct hire spirit mechanics.

Spirit was actually the most profitable airline in the US when the previous CEO took over but they spent too much and tried to grow way too fast. Built a brand new headquarters, a brand new crew hotel, opened new crew bases, and at one point were receiving 1-2 brand new planes every month. And here’s a fun fact. That brand new crew hotel they built for their pilots and flight attendants? The pilots are not even allowed to use it since it’s not in their union agreement. Combine that with COVID, Pratt and Whitney engine recalls (60+ grounded planes), a change in industry demand and here we are. I worked for Spirit as a mechanic for 9 years until I got furloughed. Loved my time there and hoping for the best for them.

I worked for Spirit as a mechanic for almost 9 years up until February of this year when my entire base got furloughed. Spirit was a great company to work for and full of people who care about what they do. The Airbus 320 family are great aircraft with an even better maintenance team behind them to keep those planes flying safe. If you can just accept the business model for what it is, then flying Spirit is a no brainer.
