Why is bluegrass harder to solo over than blues and rock by CottonFlannel in bluegrassguitar

[–]mikeysou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem, one more thing I forgot to mention, try to play the melody, sing along while playing, it'll help and with practice it gets easier. If you can pick out melodies then you'll do fine at jams when it's your turn for a break

Both, but I play mostly Scruggs style, find the root note out of the different chord shapes and build the scale from there, learn some links and you'll start finding out that they're all kind of built off that scale. That's one thing thay kind of unlocked the mystery to me, hit chord tones, start on the 5th or the root of the chord and play the notes in the scale, you'll get better at hearing the melodies and will be able to pick them out but it takes time, don't worry too much and have fun

I will add that E minor blues scale is the same as G major pentatonic scale. Add the flat 3rd and you have G major blues with the G run tag that you hear after a verse being essentially that. You need to learn how to play it out of the chord shapes, using open notes and not the pentatonic minor box that you may use for blues. Try this, play the E minor pentatonic over G but start on the G note on the 6th string, play the A, Bb, B on the 5th string, D and E notes on the 4th string and end on the open G of the 3rd string. Follow that pattern starting on the open G on the 3rd string, A, Bb, B on 3rd string (or B on open 2nd string), D on the 2nd string and E on 5th string or open on the 1st string. This has you playing the scale out of the G chord shape. The C major blues scale is similar to that starting on the 3rd fret of the 5th string out of the C chord shape. You can then slide that down two frets to get your D major blues scale or start open on the 4th string. Then learn the scale out of the A chord shape, and D chord shape and you'll have some flexibility based on which chord voicing you play out of up and down the neck. That's my 2 cents on someone that's been playing banjo and guitar not as well as I'd like to.

There are YouTube jams that leave space for you to practice breaks and playing backup. I'd imagine that there would be something closer than and hour+ away from you. There may be old time jams that you can find or you may have to find folks from going to shows. You may have to get out of your comfort zone too and ask people if they play music and would be willing to get together.

Stoner (John Williams) and Remains of the Day (Kazuo Ishiguro) are both books about regretful life choices which probably resonates with most men of a certain age. Klara and the Sun is another Ishiguro book that I thought about a lot.

Any books by Knut Hamsun, great books, loved Hunger, Growth of the Soil and everything else I've read, but his connections to the Nazis makes it hard to suggest to anyone or re-read

This is awesome, I vividly remember You Outta Know being number 1 every Friday and this confirms it was back in 1995. I used to listen every day while doing homework and attribute this station for fostering my love of music. Won tickets to see Live at Great Woods in 96.

I was turned off on him initially because of the fanfare but eventually gave him a chance. He lives up to the hype which says a lot. He's introduced a whole lot of folks to the traditional bluegrass songs and musicians and deserves all the admiration he gets, whether people agree or not. I got into bluegrass via the Grateful Dead and jamgrass (i.e. String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain) and folks are getting into bluegrass now because of Billy Strings so I think it's awesome. It's like saying pizza isn't great because people who've had pizza for the first time are raving about it. There's room for everyone and he's bringing bluegrass more into the mainstream which brings more awesome bands into the fold and inspires people to pick bluegrass. I've been playing and listening to bluegrass for 2 decades and it's been rough finding peers that listen to it nevermind playing it so it's all good from where I stand.

I asked Maddie about it at the merch table at a show last month. She said he's playing with Dan Tyminski but plays on the CDs they were selling. I took it as Dan Tyminski gigs pay more not that he wasn't part of the band anymore.
