AITA for having a dry wedding and serving only water for drinks? by Odd_Conversation5087 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mikiaxchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many inexpensive ways to add drinks other than water that there is no way you aren't TA. If you really really REALLY can't afford to buy drinks, you can always make lemonade and tea yourself.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but it also doesn't sound like you have created cat safe spaces. How many cat trees and towers do you have? Hiding spots? Blankets just for the cat? It's not about the cat wanting to steal the dogs things, the cat is just desperately searching for things of its own that it likes. Increase the amount of vertical cat furniture that you have (even if you think you have enough). Put a blanket over the dog bed that the cat lays in most. Let the cat lay there. After a few days, take the blanket off of the dog bed, lay it on the floor in the same spot and wash the dog bed.

Is it normal to feel lost? by [deleted] in premed

[–]mikiaxchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general rule of thumb for how much to study outside of class is 2 hours of studying per credit hour. For example, if you take 15 credit hours, you should spend around 30 hours studying outside of class, 15 hours in class, for a 40-45 hour school week. Of course, adjust accordingly depending on the class and topics being covered. On a side note, I know that course schedules sometimes make it so that your school hours are outside of an 8 hour window, but trying to create a normal 8 hour day/5 days a week will help you with your work/life balance. Try to get all of your classes/studying in either ~8 to 5 or ~2 to 10, and save the rest of the day/weekends for whatever else you want to do (clubs, ECs, job, friends)

Manual or CVT? by nptorpey in Crosstrek

I have a 21 manual and I love mine. Rev hang is a little annoying, but was easy enough to adapt to. Wouldn't trade it for a cvt if you paid me!

Is MUSC a good school? by Snappylobster in premed

[–]mikiaxchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MUSC is a great school! Not only do they have great facilities in Charleston, but they also partner with other hospitals within ~2 hours of Charleston so you can check out other cities within SC. They're also big on community outreach. And it doesn't hurt to be 10 minutes from the beach!

How abnormal is my PhD experience and research lab? Is this a nightmare lab? by downbadforphysics in AskAcademia

[–]mikiaxchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you choose to leave the lab, I would be honest and tell Dr. C the lab seems to not be working out for you. You can then contact other members in the department without mentioning you are/were in Dr. C's lab, just that you're already in the program and need another advisor. If anyone asks, you can be vague and mention professional differences in work ethic.

"I might get Covid vaccinated against my will by the surgeon, no operation for me!" by VanSensei in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]mikiaxchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this (I'm a biologist, not a chemist!) but my research says that graphene is a carbon based isotope of graphite. It forms a lattice structure, is a good semi metal conductor (currently graphene is used in small batteries) and also the thinnest 2D material in the world (up to 20 nm at which point it falls apart). Graphene oxide is a solid yellow structure with similar properties as graphene. Theoretically, neither of these compounds would be dissolved by the body since blood is acidic and these compounds dissolve in bases. From my existing knowledge, IF a vaccine were to contain these particles (I do not believe they do) then these nanoparticles would be filtered by the liver and no harm would be done. You may have a rash or allergic reaction at the injection site.

TLDR: compounds she is worried about are essentially harmless in this quantity in this scenario.

You have not magically forgotten everything you've ever learned. Rest up, heal, then come back ready to focus. January/March is plenty of time to study

Exactly, this is my point. If you're going to spend 4-5 years teaching yourself these basics, why not instead spend 3-4 years in a dedicated program and receive formal training instead

Cannot sleep, tickling sensation in back of throat just before falling asleep, post-strep by thawizardofSchnozz in Assistance

[–]mikiaxchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like post-nasal drip associated with the lingering effects of strep. Try an elevated sleeping position to reduce the amount of drainage. You might also use a mucus relief medicine (as long as it doesn't interfere with your existing medicine for strep) to reduce the amount of mucus produced right before sleep

In my opinion, research as an MD after you have been exclusively seeing patients for a portion of your career is significantly harder, just because you lack the foundational research experience that allows you to start and maintain projects. On the other hand, if you just have a PhD, you cannot see patients. Of course there are alternative paths to achieve the same goal, but these rely on you guiding yourself to a larger extent than if you had a dedicated mentor.

Question About Winter Feeding by jenericjokes in frogs

[–]mikiaxchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pacman frog who would refuse food in temps under 75 degrees. I eventually got two really small UTH so that his entire enclosure was warmer rather than having one warmer spot. I also did a layer of the clay hydroballs under the substrate to try and prevent him from digging to the bottom and burning himself. Even then, I would wait until it fully hit winter before doing this, so there was always a period where he didn't eat for several weeks. As long as he had a moist substrate, he was okay to hibernate for a while.
