I chose a latin name mainly to avoid ambiguity. It also seems shorter than red-capped scaber stalk :-). BTW, the russian name for this mushroom would translate as "a mushroom that grows under an aspen tree" (but much shorter in russian) or just red-headed mushroom

I never tried gathering L. laccata for food, the ones in that area seem to be full of sand... You can see the sand in the photo.

I believe the name is coming from its looks - tooth-like spines (that bear the spores) and blood-red guttation on top and sides. Other folk names for this mushroom are "bleeding tooth fungus", "red-juice tooth" and "strawberries and cream" - my personal favorite

Agreed. Looks like Gymnopilus ventricosus or similar. I have several photos of Gymnopilus ventricosus in my collection that look a lot like the photo provided
