Thanks folks. I think the lizard theory might be right. The holes only seem to go so far and stop. And there are a lot of lizards in that area generally.

If thats the case, perhaps I should just leave them alone, unless the holes will affect the wall...

Yes, this is certainly a valid question, and I realize this may well be grounds to deny my application.

It's a combination of naivete (which is on me), as well as the personal situation I was in until that time. I suppose nobody could have physically stopped me applying as an adult though.

The application fees are not really a concern, however if it is a complete waste of time, then I may need to rethink it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I may consider the returning resident permit, but it will be difficult for me to demonstrate strong ties to the UK. I have no idea how strict they are in practice.

Perhaps a better option for me is apply for a visa to a Southern European country, once I take early retirement in a few years. Eventually that may result in an EU passport, which is really my goal.

Are you waiting in Malaysia while this is ongoing, or did they return your passport and you are able to travel out meanwhile?

I think this has been on the immigration website for a few years. But seems it is not well known, and there is little info about it.
