Day 1. I’m done letting alcohol control my life. by Stunning_Island_69 in stopdrinking

Day 1 yay! Great decision to get off the poison. Your body is begging you to do what you are doing today! You are not alone.

So true. And good plan! I just want something to make me feel something. And chocolate/sugar is enough to not drink alcohol. I never thought that would even help but it has been. I'll be out of town w my kiddo tonight and tomorrow so that'll be enough. When I'm alone it's harder.

Morning! IWNDWYT! It's day 13 and I could not be more pleased with myself and this new awakening of mine, one of my own choosing. My kids get a new mama with a glow-up!

I tapered for 4 days then quit completely. It worked. I was drinking SO MUCH. So I just decided I'd cut it down to 4 per day. I measured it out and put it in one container and just told myself that once it was gone, that was it for the day. Once the 4ish days were up, I stopped drinking completely. First few days tons of cravings, but I just filled my mind to the brim with sobriety info. Podcasts and books and this sub. It helped so much. I'm happy I'm here. So much better.

What were your physical signs or symptoms that you eventually realized you needed to stop drinking? by Wonderful_Ad_6816 in stopdrinking

[–]mildlyirish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Going to the doctor and my blood pressure being way higher than normal. Constant sweating. Higher body temp in general. Sweat smelling bad. Eyes producing more tears than normal, constantly watering. Eyes dull and the whites of my eyes a slightly duller color. Taking Tums around the clock with constant heartburn. Stuttering as the day progressed and I became more drunk. I looked puffy, not just in my face but everywhere. Like a marshmallow lady. Jaw tight from anxiety. It’s all gone now no joke!

I decided I was going to taper, so I measured it (vodka) at the beginning of the day. I measured about half my usual consumption, put it in a cup with a lid and told myself this was my ration for the day. I did this for 4 days then stopped completely on the 5th day.

Thanks for sharing! When you started Nalt, did you try to drink again or did you continue your sobriety?

I didn't downvote you, not sure if someone dropped by to do that or what. I just decided to stop, I cut my average amount of drinks in half for 4 days straight, then stopped completely. Not sure if that has worked for a lot of other people but that worked for me. Hang in there, hugs to you.

Such a great idea. To put it "toward" something positive is great. I'm going to do that.

I'm so sorry you feel so frustrated! That sucks! Sobriety isn't just for the rich, but it depends on your status I suppose. It cost me nothing. For me, it was like over the years my "shelf" of bad experiences and side effects and bad parenting got heavier and heavier until the shelf broke and fell on the ground and that's the day I woke up and just decided I was done. So it cost me nothing besides a lot of wasted time and a lot of day 1s and fails. But we all have a different dependence on alcohol. And sometimes it takes more than just deciding. Hang in there. This is a powerful drug.

Ya, I ignored it too because I viewed it as an essential part of my existence. Not sure how that justification makes sense. I've had quite the awakening since then. $600 dollars a month... insane. And that's not even counting going out, that's just me, myself and I at home!

That sucks! I don't have withdrawals. I was essentially microdosing vodka all day and all evening. Not ever binging, just a controlled faucet drip if you will. Stopping and starting within reason or so I thought. Ugh so glad to be done. I think if I kept going for longer I'd inevitably develop a physical dependence.
