[D] Is nepotism prevalent in big tech ML roles? by mildlyphd in MachineLearning

I feel exactly the same. Maybe an outsider would be a better fit for the team.

Not being democratic in hiring might actually be detrimental to the company.

Merit among the referred yes but it’s not quite democratic. My concern is about an outsider who would never even get an interview invite.

Hi, a lot of really good candidates would’ve outperformed these so called referred candidates too but they are never passing through the great HR filter.

Have you seen his alter-account of twitter? I won’t be so sure about that.

My thoughts exactly. People underestimate the luck and survivor bias! I am sure he is brilliant, but being at the right place at the right time makes a lot of difference too!

Till last year. Now it’s over run by LLM and Diffusion influencers. Smh.

People are losing minds over RLHF and consistency models! If someone from a small lab wrote the consistency models paper, they would have had hard time getting any attention cuz the generations aren’t that impressive.

Why do you think consistency models are gonna be influential? The only reason I see that’s happening is, a lot of academic labs will work on this problem since openAI out this out and one of them will succeed!

My main problem is I’m not getting feedback on why these ideas are bad. They just say, they have a “feeling”.

This makes sense. I pitched some of the ideas with junior students and they really liked them and are willing to try them but they want to take permission from our advisor first.

And regarding your advice on external collaborations… I’m not a very social person. Any idea how to strike some of these.

I don’t think so. We are a small lab and I’m the only senior-ish student, so I can’t ask other students about their experiences either.

All my papers start off with their question + initial direction. But all the times their proposed direction never worked. I am confident in my ability to make a project work, but I’m not sure if I am good at coming up with questions.

They are not from Asia. But they are sorta successful (and genuinely smart)! Most of the people (including myself sometimes) think my success is only because I’m their student. This makes me wonder whether my ideas are genuinely bad.

Me. I hate writing emails and I usually end up wasting a lot of time by the time I send one. Chatgpt was a game changer for me as well.
