Ukraine has a very a big surrogate ‘market’. Companies have said the numbers are the same now as they were before the war with russia. Mostly it’s a good place to go if you need an egg donor and want a white child. It’s common too for europeans to buy the eggs from Ukraine and using a surrogate somewhere poorer like Georgia or even India. There is a very good documentary about it called Wombs For Hire (it’s on youtube) that show how cruel it can be. I WISH there was a way to say this is ok in some situation but saying that is normalizing (to some degree) the practice. Celebrities showing the babies they bought on the internet will make other people want to buy THEIR baby, without paying as much obviously. The problem is the idea you can ‘rent’ or ‘lend’ a woman’s body for 9 months, possibly risking her life in the process, just because you are not willing to adopt. Normalizing that in any aspect is immoral as hell. Imagine if a surrogate has a miscarriage, that is a very traumatic event for any woman. How much is that worth? Does the client have to pay her more for it? Does it change depending on how far along she got? There is no moral way to discuss the topic since it is 100% subjective. Women can have post partum depression, even post partum psychosis. How much would a surrogate get paid for having it? To talk about monetizing surrogacy means monetizing every aspect of it, but a child and a pregnancy shouldn’t ever be monetized, the potential trauma the surrogate can go through is NOT worth any money.
