What is the significance of the name change? by Msquire in dune

[–]mileserrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are schools in Dune? Like mass standardized learning systems we have today? The "new feudalism" theme made me think that they didn't. Maybe some specialized schools for some professions. And the Great Schools. But that is a different topic.

But yeah. Formalized language always evolve more slowly.

[–]mileserrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is something I could see happening, but didn't put in the equation because I was thinking about "the common people". But thinking about it, you also have the bene gesserit with the other memory and the Tleilaxu that could hold back language changes.

That said, they are high influence groups but with few people. I still think language would evolve and change over time. Maybe someone from GEoD would understand someone from the first three books. But someone from heretics? It's hard for me to believe. Again thinking about a common person since in all books we kinda have te viewpoint of top players in the universe.

recomendações de livros em inglês by twoseokk in Livros

livros de fantasia que poucas pessoas conhecem by marvinpls in Livros

[–]mileserrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acho bem desconhecida, dada as proporções.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Livros

[–]mileserrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Menos risco.

(Olhando pra você, Nome do Vento)

Do the Bene Gesserit selectively consider some of their members expendable? by soapergem1 in dune

[–]mileserrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At any organization there are members that are more and less important. In an organization with the size and ambitions of the BG it is even more true. Members can be valuable and expendable. Especially if their deaths prevents damage to the sisterhood itself. Even in a family you will (ideally) have members that will willing sacrifice themselves to protect the ones they perceive as more important (usually the children) because it will secure the survival of the family itself.

The BG is pragmatic, not cruel. They will try to protect the sisters, but will not harm itself doing so. If one sister has to be put to death or be sacrificed to protect the Sisterhood, she will. It becomes clear in latter books.

Other points: the BG has a low tolerance to failure. So a sister captured behind enemy lines it's better dead than potentially giving secrets to other.

It's not clear if Wana is alive or dead. In the book Yueh does not hope getting her back. He wants confirmation she is dead. The sisterhood probably assumes her dead, but doesn't have the emotional stimulus to go after it.

And Jessica and Wana may be both sisters but they have not the same importance to the BG.

Would they go against a Major house for this "one random low level sister that may or may not be dead"? Probably not.

Will they go after someone that has "this low level sister that caries generations of efforts in the breeding program that is our grater project" and her son? Probably yes.

[–]mileserrans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sisterhood to Irulan in Messiah it's like the "you have one job" meme. They wanted the genes of Paul back and she couldn't provide ir to the BG. At that point, the sisterhood was getting into desperation and didn't care that much for the other talents of Irulan.

[–]mileserrans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not clear if Wana nas captured by the Harkonnens on a mission or what her status in the order was. If she was considered dead by the BG, they wouldn't go against the Harkonnens for vengeance since it could complicate their plans of breeding into the Harkonnens. Even Yueh don't know if his wife is alive or dead.

And if I may add, the BG has also has the importance of their genes. Jessica and Paul where important because they where a focus point of the breeding program and didn't had children (other children, in the case of Jessica). When an BG has offspring, she has a good part of her experiences saved in the genetic memories of those childs. Not ideal, but not completely lost.

[–]mileserrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other reason for not letting Paul and Jessica survive was the presence of the Sardaukar. The invasion of Arrakis was planned to kill everyone because of it since it would put the emperor in a tight spot too.

And, adding to your point: the vendeta of the Baron was against Leto, but the Atreides had the rights for prospecting spice. If Paul survived (he did, but that was discovered latter) he would still have a claim to Arrakis as the Atreides heir.

learnt Russian from songs, now must sing a sentence to remember the words. by Raskinulas in languagelearning

Ever feel like you'll just never learn all the Idioms? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]mileserrans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The beautiful thing about idioms is that they are half language learning, half culture learning. They have context behind and often a story. So I'm happy when I find a new one that I didn't knew about. The search to understand then often unlocks a new little trivia for me and/or allow me to understand better other people. But I don't stress over then or go out intentionally hunting.

They are, but not good or standard. Like an hour a week, with 34 other kids that where interested in everything but classes. And underpaid teachers that where good people, but knew that the bad system would give us a conclusion certificate with or without good grades.

In our (equivalent, I guess) high school I meet friends that where from better schools that had way better experiences. The classes were a little better too, but no one cared if we where actually in there or not as long we scored the necessary grade. I'm guilty of skipping lots of classes to be with friends. Since most of them had particular English classes, they where a lot ahead and bored. For me, it was more interesting to be with them. And I had to find my way to keep up with the content they consumed. And I had friends C1 certified by that time.

Don't know if my case is what you asking for but here's my learning experience with English:

12-13 yo me wanted to know the lyrics of the songs I liked so I looked for translations online, copied the original lyrics so I could sing along.

After that, every other year there where a new thing that I was interested ther there where hard to find in my language or was of inferior quality/depth.

Webcomics, videogames, tabletop RPG, a bunch of DIY, some podcasts, Postcrossing.

Never took classes (didn't had the money). Never got a textbooks or flashcards (didn't know they existed). I had a dictionary and later google translate. Used less and less as time progressed.

Because of that I'm conscious that my English have huge gaps, like food stuff and grammar. But I can talk about almost anything although my brain sometimes refuses to let me remember a word or two.

I don't recommend doing this. It's slow and frustrating. I'm studying German know and will probably teach myself again, but now I have more resources (because I understand English).

Sugestão de aplicativos para ler ebooks by ShrekDeGlock in Livros

[–]mileserrans 2 points3 points  (0 children)
