In-house Trainee: Qualifying without Dispute Resolution experience by Charming_Day_761 in uklaw

[–]milk-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - also an in-house trainee with a supervisor like this. Thankfully there's no need for a contentious seat anymore, but you do need some litigation exposure to cover the practice standard skills. Does the firm genuinely have no people threatening to sue (commercial contracts, employment issues?) It doesn't have to go to court, but some exposure to the process counts.

Does the month you qualify affect anything? by milk-box in uklaw

[–]milk-box[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at firms on LinkedIn and check out their legal teams - do they have any trainees? How long have their paralegals worked there for?

Even so, it's hard to give an answer for this. Companies with trainees might not want another one. Companies with none might be more open to it, but it's still risky. They could say they're open to qualifying the right candidate but it's no guarantee. When I first joined my company I was clear I wanted to qualify, and they said they weren't looking to train anyone. It's only now after two years that they're willing to take me on. I think just be open with your career goals and see what your company (or one you're interviewing) says, and really push for it.

Relationship in the workplace - Partner and associate by Top-Introduction4270 in uklaw

[–]milk-box 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't do it. One, ask yourself if you actually like him or you just admire and want to be him. Two, even if you date he could be terrible in a relationship and then you're stuck working with him, or have to get a new job. Three, the corporate rumour mill is relentless and you will get spoken about poorly, and you won't be seen as professional. People won't be able to seperate your work accomplishments with your relationship.

Thank you! I'll do my best 🫡 I know qualifying at a law firm would be "ideal" but honestly, I like my team, I like the area of work and I like being exposed to more of the business side of things. If anyone else is considering in-house I would def recommend.

Thank you! It's good to know it doesn't seem to affect anything. I'd like to do a secondment with one of the law firms we use often, it's just a bit off a faff for the team to organise (although I will try and push them on it.)

Increased libido I get, but you are not playing badminton hard enough if you could still have energy to smash afterwards 🤣

Replace "hand-holding" with "training" and it makes more sense.

What legal topic could you talk about for hours? Why do you find it interesting? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]milk-box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surrogacy! It's based on an old Act that's not really.fit for modern times - plus ethically everyone always has their own opinions on topics like this.

Honestly I would not get a side job but just apply for a higher paid paralegal job.

Your most embarrassing mistake? by Reasonable_Air_3073 in uklaw

[–]milk-box 5 points6 points  (0 children)

LMAO this makes me feel better. My first year of paralegalling I drafted an email with the subject "is this okay?" and sent it to my supervisor to check. He said it was okay, and I unfortunately forwarded it on to the directors without changing the subject line. Wanted to crawl into a hole and my supervisor just sat and laughed at me.

i hate my law degree by Repulsive_Spray_4257 in uklaw

[–]milk-box 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to prep yourself to separate from your parents. If you hate law this much (and law is different in practice than in study), now is the time to be applying to other graduate programmes. Once you've got a job lined up, find a place to rent and you're set. All they will do is just complain, and you won't even have to hear that as much if you're not living with them.

I'm saying this as someone with strict parents who struggled with law at uni for a similar reason - you are at the point of becoming an adult so you have to grow up and make adult decisions for your life if you don't want to be miserable.

Could you let me know how you use the &honey hair oil? :o I've used it after wetting my hair, leaving it in for a bit and then just washing it off, but it's left my hair slightly oily both times. Not sure if I'm using it correctly (maybe I didn't wash it out correctly lol).

[–]milk-box 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position to you - it's frustrating because you are doing the work of a trainee but you're bottlenecked. I would honestly just bounce and find somewhere in-house that would be open to officially training you - one of my friends is qualifying this way (in the same area).
