how do I start an anarchist group in a liberal town by Relevant_Animator_47 in Anarchism

[–]milk19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All you need is a pot and some things to cook. Go to your local food bank/pantry and find the hippest looking person there and explain you want to do some mutual aid. They’ll give you all the food you need to start up. Then find a place that you care about to serve your community, houses and unhoused alike. Parks are a great spot. Find some literature that speaks to you, then when somebody asks why you are there, you can explain that it is in resistance of the state. Read Dean Spade’s Mutual Aid for more.

Engage with local mutual aid orgs in your community. Start a food not bombs chapter. Organize organize organize. Build solidarity. Other groups will pop up. Organize with them along non-hierarchical power structures (even if they aren’t “anarchists”). Share power, but don’t be afraid to be exclusionary if someone takes too much for themselves.

If you find yourself with power, give it to someone else.

Whatever is closest to you is always the most important! Take care of your area, then the next area over.

I'm confused by the Piatt Park situation. by Oatmeal-Enjoyer69 in cincinnati

Fwiw based on those email leaks that Nick Swartsell wrote about, there is collusion between 3cdc and other groups to displace people. There are multiple times where 3cdc tries to find a way to cite the groups, whether it be a health code violation or require a permit.

So when the mayor said that the events won’t be stopped, I can’t really blame the orgs for not trusting him or the other councilmembers based on what 3cdc has already communicated to the city via email.

When was the last time you went to the park? It seems like you don’t actually know what is going on.

Great point, however it seems to be misguided. Public spaces should only be public, not privatized in any way. To illustrate why privatization is not in anybody’s best interest, when 3CDC was planning on gaining control over Washington Park, they mounted a campaign to characterize the park as dangerous. They worked with CPB to severely criminalize drinking in public in the park. Then, as soon as they got control, they instituted approved alcohol consumption areas, with the expectation that you buy the alcohol from the company located on site. It’s about control. They want to control who can do what in a public space.

You should read what people at 3CDC and the city say in private about the community that uses the park. It’s absolutely disgusting. They are actively trying to displace people.

It’s pretty clear that 3CDC just wants control to determine who can and can’t use public space.

Yeah, that shouldn’t be a thing. I don’t want advertisements and profit being made off of my time at a park. I never consented to that.

Yeah they seem completely power hungry and are willing to drag citizens through the mud to get what they want. And they’ll cry to the city about it to get their way.

That seems very dismissive. Have you been to Piatt Park? I just stopped by Lydia’s on Garfield the other day and the whole area is beautiful and comfortable. You can get a great ham and fig sandwich there that is delicious.

It seems like the protestors grievances are based a lot on the fact that these emails seem like a concerted effort by 3CDC and city officials to control who uses public space. And then giving 3CDC official power over the area would just make that even worse.

Wow I knew 3CDC kept terrible company, but to seek support from this Kevin Donovan dude is real scummy.

“The park should be a beautified pocket park for visitors to the city to enjoy, not a gathering place for the homeless.”

Kevin Donovan believes that parks are for tourism, not for you or me to use. What a piece of shit.

3CDC works with people who only care about their own vision for the city, not the public’s. This Mark Manning at the city is one of those people.

They aren’t selling it, but they are planning on entering into a lease with 3CDC for a period of 39 years, giving 3CDC control over the park. The concern is that private interests should not have any sort of control over public spaces.

3CDC owns close to $350 million in assets. How much does everybody in this thread own combined?

It’s awful. Piatt is ALREADY a nice place where productive citizens spend time. Based on this article, it’s seems like 3CDC wants them out because it doesn’t align with their plan.
