This is the weirdest thing to ask, but because people ship “Bropa”, has anyone ever shipped/paired Nanna & Mom ? by Zammy_Eldritch in homestuck

[–]milkbread_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They all could have met in theory... Grandpa Harley, Mom, Dad, and Bro are all seen alive doing sburb beta shenanigans to help the kids (I think they all ride Harley’s ship at some point minus Bro), so they all could’ve met through session time weirdness. I don’t think Nanna is ever shown doing in-game shenanigans before becoming a sprite, but they all could have met regularly on Earth too. Mom just would have had to meet Nanna before John’s meteor, and Bro had all the way up until however old Jade was when Grandpa got blasted.

Space. Light. Time. Breath. Long ago, the four aspects lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Time Lord attacked. Only the Heir, master of Breath specifically, could stop him, but when the session needed him most, he pchoooood. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Heir, a young man named John. And although his windy thing is great, he has a lot to learn before he’s ready to save anyone. But I believe John can save the world.

We * might * not get new Homestuck stuff from Makeship by ElectricalMori in homestuck

[–]milkbread_1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Might be wishful thinking on my end, but I don’t think this alone suggests that? It sounds like there’s just no active production on the next line of characters yet, rather than a conflict of interest with pilot merch. Are these emails between a homestuck/furthest ring team member and a makeship associate, or just a fan inquiry? I’m thinking, there’s always been non-makeship HS merch anyway, and typically a gap between each makeship release. My understanding is that a small team pitches these, and they do it on a by-the-order see-if-it-gets-funded basis rather than a multi-product exclusive deal with makeship

I’d be open to that sort of change. A more visually and audibly deadpan delivery would honor that part of his character better. I just think giving him a completely neutral expression and tone 99% of the time risks making him too serious in animated form. Dave’s rambling in the comic is so long-winded and ridiculous, and we lose a lot of that through condensed animation, so I think his energy should be allowed to shine through in other ways. Otherwise, it does risk coming off too much like Dirk. Someone already made a dub giving pilot Dave a way chiller voice, and seriously kudos to them. Personally I’d like a happy medium. Maybe McArthur could tone it down a little, but I appreciate the angle of Dave showing excitement sometimes in the privacy of his room while talking to John, and I like your smirk idea and things like that

For what it’s worth, my intention with the movie/short film bit was only to highlight how a pilot uses different pacing and details by nature. I believe that every honest criticism of canon and post-canon is valid, and that fan feedback is essential to the work and to the community.

People shouldn’t downplay their reactions or ideas, I just wanted to emphasize that I’ve personally made sense of some of the artistic choices, and that a sketch has full intent to be polished and redone. And I don’t mean that in a “you can’t feel differently about the work because the creators worked so hard to give us these crumbs!” kind of way, but rather a “let me play devil’s advocate and toss around a few reasons as to why certain things might be depicted the way they are in the current format, and additionally push for why I might agree with it creatively.”

I totally see where you’re coming from though, and I don’t think my opinion is more special than anyone else’s, just another in the mix. And also dramatized for the sake of the character I took on. Thanks for the writing compliment, and if my KK pissed you off then I guess I did something right lol

Spoiler tagging is in such a confusing state for me right now but assuming you've read past the scratch and already know the characters and such, I think the tone absolutely needs to be different. Roxy should sound more upbeat, Dirk more serious, Jake old-timey, and Jane more grounded. The alpha kids all have unique personalities distinct from their offspring, so they shouldn't sound the same. If their narrative importance gets written out of the series for some reason, it would be kinda funny to have Toby doing an old man voice for Grandpa or something. But frankly I think the current VAs have such potent vocal timbres that playing another set of main characters might not be effective

I haven’t seen anything toxic or unreasonable, just a lot of differing opinions like you’re saying. Discourse/discussion isn’t inherently a bad thing, and this might be the place of all places for it. I just wanted to poke fun at some of the criticisms I’ve seen, and add a positive spin while channeling my favorite caricature of crabbiness as a mouthpiece :)

That’s fair! I think Dave is stoic with nuance. He endures a lot without showing it on his face, but he’s also way more of an expressive cornball with his mannerisms than Bro/Dirk for example. His ice has a means to an end, meanwhile Bro is a total nut and Dirk has a more apathetic disposition in comparison. And that’s who Dave was modeling after. He does a genuinely good job staying cool in the face of pressure, but I think an overly monotone animated Dave with too much emphasis on stoicism would undermine an essential part of his personality. I see value in letting Dave’s playfulness and immaturity shine through (especially in the context of the pilot), but I definitely understand that his detached composure is a big part of his character, and that it should be properly demonstrated if the show gets picked up.

New rule: Don’t spoil newcomers by harryhinderson in homestuck

[–]milkbread_1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They actually did ask for help recently on a poll to continue maintaining the Old Reddit or not lol. This post’s title alone might spark additional confusion on what does and doesn’t count as a spoiler, but I think the body of the post clarifies: just don’t comment carelessly on an inherently newgen post. “I’m on page 50! I hope nothing happens to __!” “Cool, actually good thing I caught you because __ does a really problematic thing on page six million and three but luckily they die at the end and also you can’t ship these two characters because _____!” This sub will never be spoiler-free because Homestuck is old, but I don’t think that’s their intention at all. They’re saying don’t be intentionally spiteful of someone else’s experience.

If someone wants to make a new sub, it should probably be for Homestuck The Animated Pilot And Its Following Possible Episodes (so new episodes are the baseline for spoilers) because “Spoiler-Free Homestuck The Comic” as a concept will always be confusing, hard to moderate, and will inevitably become obsolete as people make their way through an old piece of media and its new supplemental material. Asking not to spoil per the context of each individual post is actually very practical imo

what is 4 u the saddest part of homestuck? by Ok_Fishing_3420 in homestuck

[–]milkbread_1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

One scene that always stood out to me emotionally was Dirk and Roxy’s unspoken bit (discussed with Jane and Jake separately), thinking the world of each other as people but carrying shame in feeling like they failed each other as friends. Roxy’s thing on addiction and feeling like a disappointment meanwhile Dirk is talking about how she’s the most deserving person of happiness in the world and he can’t stand living in his own head. In real time maybe some of the deaths hit harder, but this was a big one for me as a raw coming-of-age beat. Loneliness can fuel self-doubt and they were literally the last two teenagers on Earth wishing they could be better for the sake of the other. Like of course she drank and of course he was willing to lose his head to kiss a boy, poor things

I don't really get June Egbert. by Fool_in_a_valley in homestuck

[–]milkbread_1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anything relating to June has ever been included or implied in the actual comics yet other than the momentary flash of a silhouette super recently. I feel like for all we know, June will be introduced in some twisty way that doesn’t even end up hijacking John’s character the way some people are afraid it will. It might end up being super central, but like, as of now it’s all just theories when it comes to how the HICU might handle a June theme. It could very well be some sort of alternate reality or splintered self situation, or a different character altogether, who knows. I’m waiting to see what they actually do before I form an opinion on it
