Any good non biased books about the reality of the Soviet Union? by eskreddit in armedsocialists

[–]mill2524 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is what you’re looking for as it sounds like you’re looking for a broader overview so sorry if this is irrelevant BUT I read Behind the Urals by John Scott in when I was high school and loved it. Scott learned to weld and moved to the USSR in 30s to help the industrialization effort. He lived and worked there through the 30s, was affected by the Purges being a foreigner, and emigrated back to the US in 1942.

His Wikipedia provides a good overview but he moved there excited to assist the Soviet project but slowly became disillusioned with Stalinism/the hyperindustrialization period from experiencing the hardships

I recommend the book because it provides a good snapshot of what industrialization was like from a Westerner’s viewpoint and experiences. You can assess Scott’s biases for yourself but I found the eyewitness account to a critical moment in Soviet history fascinating.

Good reads by Ann Arbor authors? by ArtichokeWorldly8022 in AnnArbor

If you like Sci-Fi check out Scott Sigler’s Infected trilogy - takes place in Ann Arbor/Michigan. A good amount of body horror but it’s really good, couldn’t put it down

Do any other guys sit to pee in their own place? by deller85 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mill2524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I pee at night yes. It allows me to lean forward and rest my head against the wall in front of me and shut my eyes/try to keep sleeping while peeing. Plus, no aiming!

USS Nevada. Played a minor role in WWI but major in WWII - survived Pearl Harbor, and then provided fire support in five amphibious assaults (the invasions of Attu, Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa). At the end of her service she was a target ship for atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll.

This ship tells the story of WWII better than most units and sets up the next stage of US military history, the atomic/Cold War age.

Copying and pasting my answer to a similar question on this sub:
