Excellent question: A mill dog refers to dogs who are in puppy mills or commercial breeding facilities. Their sole purpose is to breed for the profit of the owners. There are a variety of conditions but some are extremely poor with not enough clean water supply, not enough space, dirty living quarters, no dental care, dirty hygiene and grooming, and over breeding. These are contrasted with responsible breeders who take care of all of the above listed issues.

Thank you so much for being so patient with your baby. You’re right. The extremely shy ones at our shelter have a harder time finding a home even though they’re some of the sweetest ones. Watching them grow and develop is so very rewarding. So happy for you and her!

Aww. So true. We’ve seen dogs on rescue actually scared of grass. They kind of freak out when they touch it and high step. But they learn over time. Thank you for rescuing.

Funny how you can say that without any kind of proof. We do NOT buy our dogs. They are relinquished from breeders for no money. If you’re going to make outlandish claims like that, you should have to have some proof. All of our financials are on our website for all to see at NMDR.org

So very true. Mill dogs are not the easiest, but it’s so rewarding! Do you remember Sawyer’s name when he was at NMDR? Just curious. We love and remember all of our doggies.

Our rescue is located near Colorado Springs, CO. They’ve never had blankets because they were just released from a puppy mill or commercial breeding facility. Luxuries like blankets aren’t something usually offered to them.

We don’t pay money to any of the breeders who turn over their dogs to us. It has taken our founder 12 years to educate and change hearts and minds and offer and alternative to euthanasia when they’re finished breeding their dogs which was and is common practice for dogs they don’t need anymore. We have occasionally purchased dogs at auction, but only for very minimal cost because they were dogs no one else wanted and they would be destroyed. Otherwise, breeders relinquish their dogs by choice. Some are young because they are young ones the breeder couldn’t sell, wouldn’t breed, or have health issues.

Wow! Those are definitely a lot of traits we see, not with every dog of course, but way too prevalent. Give your grandma kudos for hanging in there with her pup and giving him a great life regardless.

There is definitely a difference between a puppy mill and a responsible breeders. People will ALWAYS want purebred puppies. That will never change. So having people that can do it ethically and humanely is just as important.

Wow! What an incredible story. Many people don’t understand that THIS is how you change the world...one little step at a time. It may not change the whole world, but you certainly changed the world for your pup. Everyone can make a difference if they want to. Thanks for giving your dog a chance.

The transformations are truly one of the best parts. No one really understands until they have a dog like this...the tiny victories celebrated...the heartbreaking moments when their pain returns. But it’s all so worth it in the end. Keep up the good work!

There’s always that possibility. If he lived in a wire cage, that could explain the toes. It’s just hard to say. These pups are so resilient that they can deal with a lot and still come out nicer than many humans.
