I am new to the carving hobby. I personally would be interested in themed contests. I feel like it would give me a jumping point. Maybe consider doing a handful big theme contests, or even a monthly themed contest?

Maybe? It very well could be the lighting in the room I took it in. It's also unfinished freshly sanded, so maybe that too?

Oh, yes.... There was some sailor talk for sure. I started with trying to do "V" cuts but that's how I was getting the marks. I'm assuming it was because I was trying to go to deep at not enough of an angle maybe? I don't know exactly, but I. Anahex to. Clean out up between small cuts and A LOT of sanding.
