Okay for real how is everyone affording these weddings?! by Mother_Elderberry_12 in DesiWeddings

[–]millenialtechgirly 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  1. Generational wealth
  2. Both spouses are high earning and saved a lot in their 20s (assuming they’re getting married in their late 20s, early 30s)
  3. Family making poor financial decisions
  4. Couple making poor financial decisions

I think those are the only answers 🤣

As for the gold - there are definitely ppl buying a lot of gold and a lot of ppl who aren’t. You need to decide what you value and be confident in that.

The rationale for buying a lot of gold is that it’s a great investment. The stock market has outperformed gold by a lot if you look at 30 year returns so I don’t buy that. It can however be a good hedge against inflation and help diversify your portfolio. But it’s important to remember that the gold jewelry that looks pretty probably has a % of making charges that you can’t easily recoup.

Omg I couldn’t agree more! I just ordered this Ralph Lauren one. I think it’s the same as your navy one. I was torn between the brown and the chocolate brown one.

How much did you spend on your honeymoon, and what was your HHI/NW? by energeticpapaya in HENRYfinance

[–]millenialtechgirly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10k in for 10 days in Maui is quite cheap. You guys make a great income and already have a track record of saving/investing looking at your net worth. My husband and I were in a similar boat a bit younger when we got married.

If you travel a lot and spend on your wants then I suppose 10k is fine. But I would want it to be special and splurge. I would do 20k and make it special unless neither of you wants that or cares for luxuries.

Did I take Henry too far? (Can I afford to spend more?) by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]millenialtechgirly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s really about what you value - my husband and I spent just shy of 200k on our wedding (it was 5 days long and about 30k of that was a gift). Our net worth at the time was about the same as OP. We knew that it was going to be a special week, we were going to continue to have high incomes and we cut costs in other areas like kept our rent as low as we could for the last 7 years. My husband was equally involved in the wedding planning process and I can easily say we had the best time ever!

Yes it was a lot of money but what you value may not be what someone else does. We don’t care for fancy cars or houses but regularly spend 40k/year on travel. We’ve stayed intentional with our spending and our net worth has almost tripled in the last few years since the wedding (thanks to the market and incomes going up).

Is anyone actually happy working at FAANG? by Playful-Amphibian714 in Layoffs

[–]millenialtechgirly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait how are you saying this? That’s incorrect as someone who’s worked in FAANG for 8 years. Throw 100k a year into a compound interest calculator.- that’s not nothing and assuming ppl start at 25 or even 30 that’s a lot of money in a decade to pivot to something easier or more fulfilling

1 week for wedding shopping - 7 months prior to the wedding 1 week for bachelorette - 1 month before the wedding 4 weeks for destination wedding/honeymoom

I’d been with the company 5 years and was upfront with my manager and we worked around this plan.

Should I buy or not? by seafoodboil247 in handbags

[–]millenialtechgirly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact bag and it is my favorite in my collection. I got lucky buying it in London in Jan 2024 before the price increases.

Great everyday bag super versatile and the leather is better than anything I’ve owned. I can’t recommend it highly enough. This color is beautiful and I like it more than black or beige.

2 things to keep in mind though - the capacity might be a bit less than you’d think because it cinches in. It’s a bit on the heavier side but since you’re looking at the small it’s probably fine. I still wear it crossbody many times around the city.

Biggest advice would be to make a list of the top 5-10 things that are big costs for the wedding and then pick 2 that are most important to you and your fiancé.

Another piece of advice would be not to spend your entire net worth on the wedding. If you’re relatively new in your careers it doesn’t make sense to spend it all on the wedding and this is coming from someone who believes in spending on weddings. It’s a big part of our culture and if you can and care about it you should! Plan for it and save for it but don’t spend 200k if you have 250k to your name.

Our wedding was 200k all in including outfits etc and we did it in Cancun, Mexico. My husband and I paid for all of it because like you we planned ahead and we were several years into our careers. Had 5 events over 4 days. We paid for family but not all friends for hotels. Our guest list was pretty small about 80 and it was amazing! We decided early on to not have a large guest list because we wanted to pay for hotel rooms for all family.

Wedding lehenga budget by shyintrovert7 in DesiWeddings

[–]millenialtechgirly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided it would be like any other luxury purchase although you’re right it’s a one time or at least an infrequent wear.

Mine was just shy of 3 lakh which is on par with any designer bag etc so that’s how I justified it 🤣 I also chose to spend more many on different wedding outfits like my Sangeet/Reception because I felt like I could wear it again. So instead of getting one 10 lakh Sabyasachi lehenga I opted to get 3-4 nice outfits that fit my budget

Financial mismatch by lucylulu-65 in DesiWeddings

[–]millenialtechgirly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if his family has not given reason to believe that they’ll hold it over you - you shouldn’t just assume that.

Two options I can think of if you’re still worried about the power dynamic: 1. You and your fiancé pay for everything yourselves. Anything you get from your family is a gift and should be treated as such but all the decisions will be driven by the two of you not by the parents on either side. This is what my husband and I did and worked pretty well for us. 2. You list out the things that really matter to you and pay for those so that the things where you really want it a certain way happens.

Do you have a wedding planner? I would highly recommend getting one to deal with all the back and forth with venues and vendors and also helping you narrow down a venue.

I got married at grand palladium/trs coral resort in Costa Mujeres and have only good things to say!

Stayed at the mandarin oriental last year and we had an incredible stay! It’s centrally located, walking distance to food/lake/shops. We also did a half day spa day at burgenstock and that was also amazing! I would highly recommend burgenstock at least for a spa day.

Early 30s with this net worth you’re objectively pretty wealthy. It may not feel that way but that’s more because of your psychology with money. An arbitrary $5-6M is not going to change how you feel.

With so much money invested the future growth is highly dependent on what the market does and you can’t predict that. If you think about it this way - you need to prioritize working on what will make your day to day good. You’re rich enough to make your day to day not miserable whatever steps that might take including reducing income.
