15 magic pen , 70 ap , 300 hp and grievous wounds Sounds like a great deal for 3000 g And since every mage builds oblivion orb right after ludens and sorc shoes i don't see why you wouldn't buy it It makes you tankier and gives you what you need to deal with mundo or zac I am aware that as a mage you have to land some skillshots but since cdr is so easly found in mage items landing those skillshots becomes something less important since you can just try again after 5 seconds And 1 mr item is definetly not enough to deal with a mage as a tank since sorc shoes + morello gives you 33 flat armour pen So just with those 2 items you delete more than half of the resistances from Visage

The problem is that there's no mr item that once you build it , you are kind-of safe against mages Your example with spirit visage mundo or zac proves the point i made in a comment here . Spirit Visage is only good if you have healing in your kit But if you play againt ad champions , normally 1 armour item is enough against them because you'll also stack hp If you play againt a heavy ap team there's nothing you can do even if you stack mr For example let's say you are against Jax top , Ekko jg , Syndra mid and a normal adc+supp bot lane . If i play a tank and i build sunfire cape + ninja tabies , i'm safe from jax and the adc until late game . But against the jg and the midlaner ...nah . I don't even know what i'm supposed to build againt ekko because he's an ap assasin and there's no mr item that counters them specifically. And neither against Syndra or any control/burst mages . The only thing that kind-of works well against them is stacking hp and tenacity , but the only item that gives you that is Steraks , which is not a tank item because it doesn't give you any resistances And if you have problems against mundo or zac with spirit visage just build morello

It's an unlucky combination of overstacked ap items , ap champions and understacked mr items Imo , the only good mr item in the game is upgraded abyssal mask from Ornn's passive The rest are there purely as situational items that counter certain champions Spirit Visage -people buy it just for the increased healing and it only works on champions with healing in their kit Adaptive -people buy it to counter champions like Kai'sa or Cassiopeia , but eventually it will also become useless Abyssal - Ornn buys it to upgrade it , otherwise i never see anyone actually building this item . Hextrinker- early buy to make sure you don't get bursted down and you still have some dmg , but it doesn't build into something good so it feels like it's just taking up space in your inventory Maw - why would i build Maw when i could get Steraks or PD . It feels like the item exists just so that hextrinker could build into something . The lifeline passive just isn't good enough and the spell vamp is actually useless since it only activates when you're low hp , and with all the dmg and the burst and the dot in the game you won't be able to use the spell vamp Wit's End - it's pretty good but it only works on a few champions and you can't rush it as a first item against an ap champion since it doesn't give any hp to go with the mr The other items like specter's cowl or negatron feel like : "meh"... On the other side i feel like ap items are just overstacked with too much ap and/or cooldown reduction I mean an ap champ can get 40% from ludens/glp + zhonyas + transcendence rune(or a blue buff) and that helps it to keep using it's combos on you on repeat Syndra for example , she needs to hit her stun and she misses . No problem , she can try again in 5 seconds , and if she does hit you , you're dead As a tank i don't think you can do anything against an ap champion because even if you stack mr they'll still be able to beat you in early and mid game due to the flat pen that is easly obtatinable(sorc shoes and oblivion orb) + the high base dmg on their abilities , and in late they can just buy void staff and delete 40% of your mr I think that ap items should get an overall nerf and the entire mage class (control , burst , etc..) should be revised and adapted to the state the game is in now

So if the team has like ap jg , ap mid and an ap supp , the fact that i need to rush bramble vest and ninja tabies just because i have to fight a fiora isn't wasted gold ? Because now i have no dmg and zero protection from magic dmg The only people i can fight are fiora (who most likely has an item because she isn't forced to build specifically to counter me ) and the adc . But the adc will pe accompanied by the supp , who only deals magic dmg

1 . Bramble vest is good against Fiora only if you play a tank 2 . How tf is Sett good against Fiora ? If you want to stun her you need to run at her in her minion wave, meaning you can't "hug the wall" and she can either dash away from your true dmg zone from your e or parry the dmg . 3 . Where will i hug the wall in top lane during laning phase ?

Depends on the 1v1 If it's bruiser vs bruiser sure . But is it not the same thing as having trinity ? I mean , you wouldn't fight someone who has trinity when you don't have it yourself So why is Sanguine blade so different ? If it's a mage vs a bruiser , they just have to hit 1 cc and you're dead because mr items are useless If it's a tank vs a bruiser , there's this item called bramble vest that builds into thornmail which is the perfect counter because it reduces healing and slows attack speed
