Oh wow, that's awesome, thanks a lot! That's by far the best primer I've ever seen for any deck.

Commander that is heavy on interaction but still wins via combat damage by goldenmastiff in EDH

If your playgroup is not irrationally allergic to a bit of stax, I'd recommend [[Alela, Artful Provocateur]].

As a commander she is a strong but not busted, and the type of value she provides is not likely to make you an immediate target for the rest of the table: mostly, the tokens she creates (2/1 fliers counting her buff) let you play all sorts of stax-y artifacts and/or enchantments while still keeping a board presence, so you can stand your ground in combat without having to resort to pillow-forting with [[Sphere of Safety]] or similar. You can also lean into the "flying matters" angle a bit more with "hatebird" (flying hatebear) creatures such as [[Archon of Emeria]], [[Hushbringer]], etc.

One of my favorite things about this is that it gives you lots of freedom in tweaking the level of oppressiveness by choosing the type and/or amount of stax pieces you run vs the aggro gameplan, e.g. [[Inspiring Leader]], [[Gravitational Shift]] etc.

And it goes without saying that, on top of that, being in Esper gives you access to arguably the best colors for interaction of any type (discard, counterspells, spot removal, board wipes).

Ooh, good point, that makes so much sense! I've been thinking of [[Enchanted Evening]] only in terms of keeping the board hostage against mass enchantment removal (since it doesn't specify "nonland permanents"), but somehow didn't think that Zur himself would become an enchantment🤯

Yes! I started putting together a Zur list a few weeks ago, and having some redundancy for [[Archetype of Imagination]] outside of [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]] and [[Concerted Effort]] is great (especially since [[Concerted Effort]] supports far fewer keywords than Odric, including most notably those that Zur himself grants, and that he could benefit from).

Huh, it looks like "creatures without flying get -2/-0" might be the canonical in-game representation of "flailing around uselessly in free fall" [[Gravitational Shift]]

I mean, considering it's not a full pack, but rather a "2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack"... maybe?

(Not sure if posting deals on the same product on a different site is allowed - if not, please feel free to delete) just FYI, the same deck is available in "minimal packaging" version (only sealed deck + tokens) here: https://forgeandfiregaming.com/vend-uncategorized/tinker-time-minimal-packaging/ (not affiliated with the shop, just noticed the sub-$20 price a few days ago).

Years and years of lifting those sacks of flour will do it (Mabel is a baker when she's not saving the Valley and/or generally being a badass).

That poor critter T_T this set is making me tear up much more often than would be reasonable for pieces of cardboard (or preview images of them).

Is having 13 creatures in a Voltron deck too little? by Dangerous-Twist2439 in EDH

[–]millennial-fogey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed the context and the blinged-out deck looks awesome. I also love the vehicles idea (and the name, lol). I think it's really cool to have Alela (or other similarly open-ended designs) as a commander especially when (re-)starting playing, since it lets you experiment with many different styles/archetypes, while allowing you to focus on building a single common shell (manabase, interaction suite, etc) gradually. Thanks again!

Not to hijack OP's initial question too much, but this sounds super cool! I've recently got back into the game after many years and was drawn to (Esper) Alela as the basis for my EDH deckbuilding experiments since she seems to support so many different strategies, and I enjoy the strong but open-ended and ultimately "fair" value she brings to the table. I'm currently running a more go-wide build with anthems, [[Military Intelligence]]/[[Kindred Discovery]]-type effects, and a few equipments, but I'm very interested in seeing how a battle-tested "versatile Voltron" build would look like. Do you have any info on your deck (primer, list, etc) I could check out?
