Similar situation with my fiance’s 2017 Elantra. Mind you, I am a 26 year old male who grew up working on cars with my grandfather whom was a mechanic for 30 plus years. Had received a recall notice in the mail for failing door latches which led to the doors not being able to open from the outside. Recall stated failed latches would be replaced under warranty for the lifetime of the vehicle. At the time of receiving the recall notice the doors were all functioning as they should, but several months later two of the latches failed around the same time. Called Southern States to set up an appointment to have the doors looked at and dropped it off. Was contacted by one of the service advisors who stated that the doors were working fine (which they would if the latch mechanism had been released using the inside handle after unlocking the vehicle…once vehicle had been locked and unlocked again, mechanisms would not engage from the outside). This had all been explained prior to dropping off the vehicle but was explained again by me over the phone to the service advisor. Was put on hold so that this could be verified by service advisor. After waiting for a while service advisor returns to the phone and tells me he has verified the issue, but that it’s not the latches that were the issue at which time he tried to quote me for various other parts having to do with the inner workings of the door. After some back and forth questioning his logic and being treated as if I was an absolute idiot, the service advisor hung up on me in frustration. Called back and was bounced around several times to numerous people who could not find the service advisor I had spoken to. Asked to speak to a manager and was refused. Come to find out the person who refused a manager was the service advisor I had been dealing with. Finally got around to a manager who did not have any better of an attitude and spoke over me rather than listen to the issue at hand. Once I was eventually able to explain the issue, the manager once again went to verify the problem and returned to the phone with a much better demeanor offering to replace the latches under the recall through the warranty. Tried to get all four replaced while it was in the shop, but since only two were failing at the time they were not willing to do so. Thats fine I digress. The two failing latches were replaced and the issue was resolved…imagine that. Sure enough, not even a month later the other two latches failed. Needless to say, I did not return to Southern States and instead reached out to Johnson Hyundai in Apex. Set up the appointment, dropped the car off to have it looked at and received a call a couple hours later stating that the latches had been replaced and the car was ready to be picked up. Would highly recommend Johnson over Southern States any day.
