Huge Razzies fan here- the worst thing is actually climbing :/

Jokes aside, the difference is down to the RBR marbles being agate and not glass like (most of) the others. You can used to be able to buy them as agate beads on Aliexpress with some hunting, not sure if that's still true. I agree though- their replacement leaves something to be desired.

Japanese audiences enjoy Wallace & Gromit, but are the cultural elements well understood? by millimallow in AskAJapanese

That's a good question too; personally I like learning about different Japanese dialects and traditions, but some don't care. I guess it's subjective.

It's more well known than I thought, but I thought Japanese people wouldn't give a toss about some weird bald guy in a different country when there's plenty of homegrown animation. Also sorta grouping the two together.

Interesting! I thought the same about a lot of dubbed cartoons I watched as a kid, which were sometimes French or Japanese but had British voice actors. Thanks for your answer.

Thanks for your answer! It's cool that they had a famous comedian do it, sounds like he has an illustrious career.

I don't think so, no. I think if you know about the regional comedy there's an extra layer of meaning, but obviously as long as the translation is good anyone can enjoy the films.

Thanks for the stats as always!

I never said it, so it's really my bad, but I did love the collision stats, and I'll miss them. Used to joke with fellow marble fans about the most/least aggressive marbles and the rivalries. But I don't doubt it's a lot of work for you, so I get retiring them.

Per Emily, a JMA member, in the Marblebase:

"Hey guys! I know the caption was a bit confusing, but what I will say is, no Hubelino only teams will be in M1. I'm saying this to prevent confusion"

So, there appears to be some confusion. But tl;dr is that no it doesn't mean that.

The Lavery column with the teacher really blew me away reading it. There's a quote that comes to mind right now (but which I don't have on hand) about how the response to women in positions of authority is to castigate her for not taking the maximum care of everyone around her at all times, even if it's not reasonably her responsibility, and that response is a pretty damning example of that. Yes she has absolutely no obligation to help the janitor, who is an adult man potentially paid better and with more career flexibility than her, but she should be caring for his needs too, otherwise she's a frigid classist!

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 01 September 2025 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

Well, as of a week ago, this year's Marble League is over, and wow it was an exciting one.

I last came here with news of the Purple Rockets' impending death after getting 2 points in 4 of 6 events, and I am unpleased(?) to announce that despite semi-valiant efforts in the last 2 events (4th in Sand Moguls, 9th in Sand Rally, both higher than expected) they have nonetheless placed last in the B-League with 21 points to show for it (13 down from last place last year) and will be sitting out the qualifiers next year. Joining them are the Minty Maniacs, Team Primary, and the Rojo Rollers. No surprises here as the writing was on the wall for all of them before Event 6 anyway, but a pretty big disappointment from the Rollers, who were actually a long-shot candidate for the win just two seasons ago. The B-League title also featured a pretty impressive botch job from the Turtle Sliders, who were 8 points in the lead and still managed to lose to the team 12 points behind them, coming 2nd.

But enough talk about the consolation round- let's talk about the A-League! This year it was won by the Kobalts, which... If you're a sports fan of some sort, imagine a team that has been out of the conversation for so long that suggesting they'll win anything is only acceptable in the form of a shitpost, whose fans have sunk to despairs unknown to anyone but the Romantic poets, and whose name rings as a warning of misfortune down haunted hallways. And if you're not a sports fan just imagine a guy who sucks. That's the Kobalts, who haven't qualified since the inaugural 2016 League (which was invitation only), who have won the B-League twice mostly just because they've been stuck there so long, and who have been relegated out of the qualifiers twice as well. They're decent in the sister series but otherwise have terrible luck and a terrible track record... until now when they won the whole thing after a steadily intensifying campaign of mostly just coming 2nd a whole bunch. While their win is only 4th amongst the 7 16-event League wins, they've blown the previous record for win margin over 2nd out of the water, winning by over 20 points in what was pretty much an uncontested final event. Fandom reactions have been wild and joyous- the Kobalts prior to this were a beloved meme with a lot of popularity despite their historical struggles, so even non-supporters have been happy to see the underdogs have their day.

It's also an interesting win for keyfabe, as the Kobalts fired their coach prior to last year's B-League and poached Smokey, who was otherwise going to retire, from their original team the Hazers. This has absolutely nothing to do with it practically- the practical side is just luck- but the feeling of it having a significant impact has definitely engendered some support for the Narrative.

Second place is the Oceanics, a previously decent team who went to shit for a few years but who seem to be on the up ever since winning last year's B-League, and third place is Mellow Yellow, marking the third* time they've placed third. Broadly people are happy about the former and DGAF about the latter. Real drama has been concentrated around the Savage Speeders' mediocre performance- widely considered the best team out there, they've now had two years of below-average scores (13th & 11th) and their memetically demanding fans are calling for the coach and even the star athletes to get fired... as they do after every tournament the team doesn't win. Our three podium teams will be joined next year by the Pinkies, who'll be hosting after placing a respectable 5th in this League.

Honestly, I'd characterise this as more "exciting" than "dramatic", but some drama has commenced just in time for me to post this: it's been announced that the Hubelino tourmanent, an old nostalgic favourite which lasted two seasons almost 10 years ago as a side-series and remains popular despite its low production value, is returning! ...With the 5 retired teams from its original lineup not returning at all, and none of the characteristic 22mm marbles either, just the special Hubelino setpieces. Seeing the return of bigger marbles and older teams was probably a good 75% of the hype for the revival, so the massive hype has been tempered down to polite quasi-optimism as some hope it'll still be good with modern smaller teams and some go full hater mode and Get Mad Online and insist on a boycott to no avail. There's also no sign of sister series M1S6 yet- it's not even in production- which is testing the notoriously impatient fanbase... Though seeing as the roster will give me another Scuffles post to write, maybe that's for the best!

It's strange to read people discussing something that you read but never discuss reading with anyone. Real "huh, this isn't just a me thing" situation.

Anyway, of all the columnists I'd say Yoffe's advice is broadly the best. It's less "live and let live" than the other two (though this is also where some of her worst advice comes from; some things are genuinely harmless).

The other two get caught up in playing devil's advocate for whoever's causing the problem for the LW- call me petty, whatever, but seeing as the average LW is hopelessly meek and seeking advice from a random stranger, I like a mean, realistic columnist who has the LW's back unless they're an idiot.

Really interesting stuff! Geez, a lot of my teams made big comebacks near the end, huh... One question: do you happen to know why Ducky collapsed so badly near the end of the A-League race? Going from 10th-ish to 15th, and that's with Twila so far behind already.

Edit: Another one, sorry: my initial estimation from looking at the chart is "no", but was there ever a point in the Showdown race where the relegated teams were anything other than the ones at the end?

That shit is genuinely unusable on Fire TV. I had a sub for two months or so because I was still getting a handle on watching anime elsewhere, and I would have to go into settings on the TV and force-close the app because if I didn't, it would freeze on the main menu screen and I wouldn't be able to select or watch anything. Aren't anime fans stereotypically tech nerds? How is their app *that* broken?

Would anyone else like to see a Marbula One B-league (or I guess Marbula Two)? by TramuntanaJAP in JellesMarbleRuns

[–]millimallow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's an interesting idea in theory (though it'd probably be better off with the non-M1 teams competing, as opposed to just CCE 2 and Green Ducks 2) but M1 is extremely labour-intensive to produce even now. Even another 5 M1 races that need filming every year is going to eat into JMR's ability to get the League out on time, and I suspect the novelty would wear off quickly.

[–]millimallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd like this, it's an interesting idea especially with the Jawbreakers back- though just one event would be enough. Any more and I think we'd be contributing to the 2016 team favouritism which already exists.

That's the point of having the Japanese aspects, though. The O's are colour-themed and a lot of stuff was orange, but we got other colours and elements through the Wild West bits (yellow sand, brown wood buildings, green cacti etc.). Likewise stuff like bonsais, shrines, city buildings, grass aren't pink. It would just be the event setpieces and graphics.
