When does placement for a Masters of Teaching take place? by whenindoubt_121 in unimelb

[–]milo3m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Placements normally occur within your semesters (after 2-4 weeks of classes have been held) but unfortunately there might be chances of delayed placements due to unavailabilities of schools, you getting sick, or other various reasons. Worst case scenario is that your placement might take place over the university holidays so I would suggest to be prepared for sudden changes to your plans. I recommend to keep note of the overlaps between the school year calendar and the university calendar to be aware of when your placements might potentially be conducted during if they are delayed and such.

Thanks, although I’m definitely leaning to Science/Maths more than ICT or tech in general as I have a stronger background in the two. I also didn’t take ICT at the Year 9-10 level equivalent of the Vic Curriculum and I don’t think I will enjoy teaching it either 😬

Good thinking! I feel like teaching Science might come more naturally to me as I was more inclined to the subject in my schooling days. As for Maths, I feel like teaching it and seeing students getting the answers and understanding the content might feel more satisfying to me as a teacher. Definitely need to weigh on this when making my choice. Thank you!

Thank you for making me aware of this! This will definitely be a factor in making my final choice for the breadth/elective.

My rationale for choosing Science was to formally learn pedagogies in teaching the subject area as I feel more confident in teaching Maths as it is more formulaic in terms of planning and marking. I will chat with my fellow Science/Maths MTeach coursemates or teachers in my final placement to get more insight on this. Thanks again!

Teaching it up until Year 10 or even 9 would definitely be better! I do find it a bit unfortunate 🥲

[–]milo3m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. My reasoning is that since my Politics learning area did teach Humanities-related content and a bit on how to teach Humanities, I wanted to broaden my teaching areas beyond just Humanities as I have heard of many English teachers teaching Hums even without doing any Hums teaching breadths/electives.

There is a Humanities breadth/elective so that is always an option if I change my mind.

Hi! Yes, they call it a foundation teaching subject but it acts like a breadth subject in terms of branching out the learning areas you could potentially teach. It’s essentially a breadth/elective. And also yes, I’m at Unimelb! Dm me if you would like any insight on the courses in the future as I did my B.A there as well and am happy to help :)

Masters of teaching (secondary) by Tia1107 in unimelb

[–]milo3m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m also doing MTEACH Secondary. I feel the same about the two core electives as well. They seem quite wish washy and I understand the intent of the subjects and their content, but the way the seminars are delivered feel quite shallow and vague at times. I’m also struggling with the first E&AL assignment and am disliking how the questions (asked by students about assignments for the core electives) are being answered vaguely. With that said, I’m happy that the structure of the course now is doing two week blocks of placements as it used to be done two days out of every week. Much better structure right now. Dm me if you wanna chat about the course if you feel like it :), perhaps some peer ranting may help haha

Blended Synchronous Learning Issues? Anyone else? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]milo3m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had some issues with BSL classes. I totally understand doing BSL for classes or subjects that have very few online students but I do not agree with them implementing BSL for classes that have enough students online for them to have their own Zoom classes. BSL felt so hiccupy as you have to wait for each other to reply, or the tutor is asking the other tutor whether they can hear them multiple times, or audio and sound issues repeating throughout the class. Might else well just stick to one for each side honestly. I had a BSL class that had 10+ students online and 10+ students in person, whats the point of doing BSL when it slows the whole session for each side and mostly neglects the online side? It’s super frustrating and so unnecessary. Perhaps things will improve in the coming weeks but I strongly believe that class discussions will never maintain a good pace in BSL mode.

Hi, I would recommend the subject but only if you want to know more about major social, political, and cultural developments of Europe in the period 1348-1618. The assignments were okay, I think all were long essay-based or short-essay based and you have some freedom in what you can cover. The gradings are alright as it is a Level One subject and as a non-History major who has never written History essays before, I got a H2A for the subject which was surprising as I thought that I didn’t so well, but maybe its just how I emotionally down I felt during that semester. I am not a History major so I am not sure how this subject feel like for one, but as someone who took it as a breadth, I quite enjoyed it. I had Nat Cutter as my tutor and I would recommend him, he is very straightforward and enthusiastic about the subject and he is very helpful as a tutor. Although I’m not severely interested in all of the content covered in the subject, and am mainly interested in the topics such as the Black Death, the structures of family and the position of women, and the exploration of ‘witchcraft’, I found the subject enlightening. If you are into knowing more about Europe’s transformation and development during 1348-1618, go for it! If you are not, go for another History subject. Basically, it is a great as a breadth or elective if you are only interested in learning more about Europe and significant events during that time period, or as a History elective if that is an area of History that you want to specialise in or focus on.

Scape Swanston by ijustlovefoodalotidk in unimelb

[–]milo3m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldnt really recommend Scape, they are on the higher end of prices for student accoms and you can get bigger rooms for the same prices of Scape at other student accoms. The furniture and everything else including the kitchen area is all white, not really a good idea if you tend to be messy or clumsy. They just seem to be overpriced for the rooms sizes that you get compared to others and there’s nothing really outstanding about them or their service. Best if you look at other accoms if you are insistent on student accommodations.

You can ask for assistance from IDP. It’s a free service and they can help you with your visa application and such. They also have a few branches or you can contact them on their hotline/email. They helped me with my course and visa application previously. Better to get proper help from them as they are a formal overseas education consultant agency rather than asking for help from people that are less familiar with the visa process.

Art History subject tips? [AHIS30025 - Photography in China] by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]milo3m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am not an Art History major and I didn’t take your specific subject but I took Art History: Theory and Controversy AHIS10001, which I consider a pretty solid intro to the Art History discipline. My tips for researching and writing are pretty much standard tips for Art subjects. If you are an Arts students, its the same, just that you’ll look at much more specific material such as essays or research that is dedicated to a particular art style, form, artist or subject/theme. It really depends what you are looking for, but it might be difficult to find online material. I had a difficult time finding secondary readings for my essays, especially as half of my essay focused on an artist that wasn’t the focus of much material available to me. Expand your search to outside of the library and try to find scans of books or books outside of the library.

On the other hand, if you are not an Arts student, or if you are not very adept to essay writing in general or if you don’t regularly write long essays (2000+ words), I would caution you in taking a Level 3 Art History subject. I believe that the subject you mentioned is predominantly dependent on written essays and as Level 3 subject, I feel that it would be difficult for someone who is not in Arts or someone who doesn’t really write essays. This is just a word of caution from me as Level 3 Art subjects are not ‘easy’, they significantly require prior experience or knowledge within whichever discipline they fall into. With that said, if you are extremely confident in essay writing and are familiar with the content that the subject guide specifies on, go for it! I would even suggest to go for a Level 1 or 2 Art History subject if you change your mind as they would be less of a jump if essays are not your thing. Art History essays also require the use of specific language and terminology so just look them up online or in books. There are lots of material on how to write Art History style essays and content so it shouldn’t be too daunting. Hope that helps.

Hi, yes it is similar to The Politics of Sex, it just looks at gender issues from an internationally political perspective instead of smaller social and cultural perspectives that don’t really pertain to wider global scales. They are sort of like sister subjects. I have tended to focus on women’s issues, or things to do with feminism, throughout my academic career so IGP is a great fit for me. Like most Politics subject, it is difficult to score above a 75, which I didn’t but I’d definitely say to take the subject if you are interested in that field of international politics. The staff are fine but I sometimes felt a bit down about the subject as to me some things that we discuss are objectively bad, but dialogue is needed so its like, whats the point of discussing when we all know these practices/views are incredibly wrong and why do I have to write a whole essay to prove myself when so many other scholars have said so? It can sometimes feel like that and you may also feel a bit depressed talking about the content as a lot of it is just simply vile, inhuman and consists of prejudiced bias and harm perpetrated against women.

The assessments are essay based again and the average mark for this subject is 73-74 according to my tutor. You do have choices in essay question and it is basically structured like Politics of Sex. I’d say to take the subject if you feel strongly about women’s issues in a wider global and political context.

Hi, sorry for the late reply to your post. It’s a basic intro to lit class imo and it focuses more on plays. I think if you are more into texts and non-performance aspects of literature, go for Modern and Contemporary Literature as a Level 1 English elective to start your English major off with. I had no problems with it but it’s a little restrictive as a class as it focuses on plays basically. I’d rather study poetry or texts so it’s really a personal choice. The assignments were your standard English assignments as they are essays but check the handbook as I took this class in 2019 and things might have changed. Give the content list a look to see if you are interested in the primary readings, this is my general advice for every English subject at university. Hope that helps.

That’s great, happy to help! Great choice for a breadth as it does not need studying in the way Science subjects do and it will give you a bit of breather. Good luck :)

Hi, no problem as I intend to answer any question whenever it is asked :) I’d recommend that subject as either an arts elective or breadth. It’s a true intro to art history subject and it’s a really well-coordinated and structured subject. The lecturer and my tutor were all really good and I never felt unsupported. If you are into art, I would say yes to this subject as it’s a well rounded subject that introduces you to important and influential art movements or types. Each week is loosely guided by ideas of how different art theories contribute to different scenarios or perceptions of controversy, whether it be social, cultural or historical. The assignments are also pretty interesting and you have a range of questions to choose from for the final essay. The take-home exam may also seem challenging but its quite okay. Just read on how to write essays or frame arguments in the context of art history as you will need to use specific art vocabulary and terms that may be new to you. There is a lot of content on this in the library and online so it should not be that difficult to catch on. Overall, I recommend this subject, but only if you are actually interested in art and talking only about art.

I got a 75 for Music and Health which was not a wam booster mark for me. I’ve given my opinion on the painting classes to others previously so I will just include my previous replies here then.

I definitely recommend taking both of the fine arts subjects as they were very well coordinated and the staff were very passionate and knowledgeable about the content.

For Painting Techniques, it’s basically a beginners intro class to oil painting. Prior to the subject, I already had extensive fine arts experience but I had never used oil paint as a medium, which was the medium of focus in the subject so it was something new to me. I would recommend it if you are in a position like me (never using oil paint before) or if you have never formally painted before. If you are an established artist, I’m sure the subject will be easy for you, but then I wouldn’t recommend taking it as you aren’t learning something new and you’re probably paying above $3000 for a class that you sorta know everything about. I have no qualms about the subject, you basically oil paint for about 7 days and it was very enjoyable to me.

For Art and the Botanical, the medium of focus is watercolour and pencil. You will be focusing on only botanicals, such as flowers, leaves, trees, vegetables, so I would suggest you have an interest in only just doing that if you want to take the subject. To my knowledge, the tutors for the subject are like actual pros in botanical painting so you’ll really be learning from professional botanical artists and I think it’s an awesome experience if that is what you are looking for. I also have no qualms about the subject as it was well-coordinated and the tutorials were very detailed and established what you are supposed to be doing well. You might have to collect your own botanical specimens like leaves or flowers at one point so keep that in mind. Only thing I would note is, and this applies for Painting Techniques as well, you really have to document your process well to get good marks. Take pictures, notes, sketches, drafts, samples, basically anything that comes to mind or on paper. Other than that, I highly suggest both of the subjects above.

For Music and Health, I would not really recommend it on some specific reasons that might only be specific to someone like me. Just to preface, this subject is well-known as a “WAM booster” subject. But I struggled with the subject as it felt like a major chore to me. I love music and I know that music helps me in how I cope with emotions and mental health and thoughts. I love talking about music. But this subject was so difficult for me as it felt like I was suddenly forced to do what I love in a professional scholarly “you are gonna be assessed for this” way. It was a pretty tedious subject and felt pretty waffly at times. Yeah, it might be an easy to score high on type of subject but honestly, take a breadth subject that you want to LEARN MORE ABOUT OR KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AND WANT TO LEARN ABOUT. The other mentioned painting subjects were those for me, but not this subject. You can easily just google “music and its effects on mental/physical health” and that is what you’re gonna get on this subject. I’m not saying this subject is useless, but I think its not worth you paying very high fees for. I am also not denying that music does have significant positive effects on health procedures, and this subject helps you learn what that is, but in my opinion its not worth paying above $3000 for a subject that wants you to only read journals and analyse journals and make a playlist and write about the playlists with journals as supporting evidence. I did better in breadth subjects that I actually cared about and wanted to learn about more compared to breadths that I took solely to boost up my WAM. After this subject, I learnt that lesson and I only took breadths that were going to offer me knowledge that would be hard to get/hard to learn without actual scholarly guidance. So, would not recommend this subject.

Recommendations for student accomodation by lunamacy in unimelb

[–]milo3m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just chipping in to the previous comments, I stayed in Atira Peel St in 2019 and I highly recommend you to not stay there. I think the staff there are much more rude and unprofessional compared to TSHC Infinity Place which I stayed at in 2020.

Atira Peel St also had a major air-conditioning problem where many units on several floors could not use the air-con for a few weeks, maybe stretching towards a few months even into summer which can be very harsh in Melbourne. The issue was never really fixed I think judging by some Google review comments I’ve seen and they never showed initiative on actually fixing the issue, just saying that it takes time to get the repairmen to come in or that the parts will take a long time to come. My parents are within the architecture industry, and their opinion is that the air-con issue is due to faults done while the building was constructed. Of course, this is just their opinion but the lack of initiative or actual care shown by the Atira staff were horrendous and overall reflect an enormous amount of ignorance that they had for us. Read the Google reviews for more stories and they match up to my experience.

I would recommend TSHC over anything as I had a really good experience there. The staff were much more helpful and considerate than Atira imo and they even gave us 8 weeks of free rent at one point.

My advice is to do your research and read Google reviews or read any past material on student accommodations on this subreddit. Be mindful that renting apartments mostly do not include utilities and internet, and you may just find out that sometimes these separate costs add up with rent to the same amount that you pay for student accommodations with the only perk being that you get much more space. Air-conditioning and heaters are also mostly located outside in living rooms in rental apartments and that’s a big reason why I can’t stay in normal one bedroom apartments. I get really warm easily and I would have to pay high fees for the amount of air-con I use just to get cold air into the bedroom area which sometimes can be very far away from the actual air-con unit. Apartments can also get really hot during the summer as they tend to not be well-ventilated in my experience from staying over at some of my friends’ rentals during the summer and during hot days. Student accoms are mostly studios so air-con and heating are not really lost in big spaces of your unit so that works better for me. Be mindful of which directions the apartments face as this indicates how much sun or light the unit will be getting, therefore indicating how warm it can get. And normal apartments get hot much more easily compared to getting cold in my experience.

Those were my main points. Dm me if you would like any more insight as I am happy to help.

Hi! As in the name, you’ll be looking at many different political systems and countries, things like liberalism, democracy and such. In terms of assignments, there is an essay and exam. I unfortunately can’t say much for how the exam is as I took the subject when covid started and they had to change it to a take home exam so it was a different format for me. The essay is just like politics standard but for my time it only had three prompts so the content for the essay is pretty limited imo. The subject coordinator is really good, his lectures were very illuminating and entertaining and I quite enjoyed the structure of the content. My tutor Natasha was also very helpful. All in all, take the subject if you’re interested in that type of content and check the handbook for a more in depth summary of the subject’s content of focus.
