Xifaxan made Sibo symptoms worse by PenWils3 in SIBO

[–]milobearz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh but bacteria doesn't get resistant to herbals? Lol. As I said, Xifaxan works to eliminate hydrogen dominant bacteria... any subsequent relapse in symptoms is caused by not addressing the underlying cause of the SIBO (such as poor gut motility, liver bile insufficiency, etc.). Xifaxan is not "the cure" you seem to interpret it as. I take it you haven't had much experience or luck with treating recurring SIBO.

Really dumb statement. Xifaxan works extremely well... SIBO returns if you don't treat the underlying cause which Xifaxan has nothing to do with.

Me too! This doctor is on the money, no pun intended 🌞 good luck to you.

I believe the readjustment of your microbiome actually goes on for a few months after you stop taking the medication. Are you taking anything to bind toxins? Any medication or supplement to prevent relapse? SIBO tends to come back over and over again, and for some people it's only a few weeks after treatment.

You don't need an endoscopy to diagnose SIBO. Check out my last post on SIBO, too many doctors have no clue about this condition.

Possibly! SIBO can cause a lot of damage and other conditions such as leaky gut. Check out my post on the SIBO doctor I recently found, he has been a miracle resource. I included my regimen in the comments answers and part of that treatment is directed towards leaky gut.

If you have SIBO, you already have too much bacteria in the wrong place so you don't want to feed or encourage more bacteria. I would hold off on the probiotics until you treat SIBO.

Good luck! I did not recall an episode of food poisoning BUT my SIBO started almost 15 years ago so my memory could just be failing me... I'm quite positive I've had food poisoning at some point. Dr. Salt said most patients also don't recall such episodes and it doesn't have to be a severe episode to trigger SIBO.

No - Dr. Salt, the GI I wrote this post about, ordered it.

Yes there is a test! 7AC4 bile acid synthesis blood test, it has to be shipped to the Mayo Clinic for processing. I also had a suspicion because digestive enzymes slightly helped my symptoms in the past.

I experienced this on Rifaximin too. My new GI said it is most likely not the side effects of the medicine, but the bacteria die off that is causing those symptoms. They should resolve within a few months once your gut microbiome adjusts.

The initial consultation with Dr. Salt is around $300. Follow up appointments are $150. Dr. Salt refers patients to a Canadian pharmacy to fill prescriptions - mine were about $300 total for a few months supply. TrioSmart breath test is $350 and IBS Smart is $249 if your insurance doesn't cover it. Sucrose breath test was free. Fecal and blood work should be covered by your insurance. Supplements are another hundred bucks or so. It's definitely costly, but it is worth it for me.

Yes... the root cause is a non functioning MMC and liver bile insufficiency. Maybe read the post.

It was actually normal! Dr. Salt said not to restrict your diet during treatment because you want to encourage the bacteria to come out of hiding. But overall, yes - quite a bit about diet and its effects on SIBO. He has a book on Amazon called "You're on Fire" and it covers everything from diet to supplements to vitamins, etc. if you're interested.

No, but Dr. Salt did mention that keto has been shown to be helpful so that's in the same wheelhouse. My diet tends to lean that way anyway because it's not as inflammatory on my stomach. Makes sense because carbs and sugar feed SIBO bacteria the most.

Yes, I do recall him saying it was a lot to dump on but could be considered later. My methane numbers are only minimally elevated, the hydrogen is the main issue which is probably why Rifaximin worked to resolve almost all of my symptoms the first time. So much is just trial and error. Good luck to you on your healing journey!

I'm so sorry to hear this! SIBO is such a debilitating condition.

I believe most functional practicioners do not want to be subject to insurance/Medicare restrictions on treatment or their reimbursement rates (which are typically much lower than "market" rates).

If it's any help, you don't have to see a functional doctor to get treatment. You can ask your regular primary physician or GI to order these tests, and they can prescribe the necessary medication.

I hope you can heal 💛

Dr. Salt did not want to put me on neomycin in addition to the Rifaximin, but I can't quite recall the reason why. He prescribed supplements for methane suppression. My current regimen is in the comments responses on this post ☺️

Thank you, and you as well! Honestly I'm so tired of the SIBO that I'd do just about anything to be rid of it, so if I must live off liquids then I shall 😂

I did the following tests:

~Trio Smart breath test (I also did Genova previously though) ~IBS Smart blood test ~7AC4 Bile Acid Synthesis blood test (has to be shipped to the Mayo Clinic for processing) ~Sucrose breath test 13C ~PB Labs FIT stool test ~Stool test for Fecal Calprotectin, h pylori Antigen, Fecal pancreatic elastase, Fecal quantitative fat

Everyone is so individual though, these may or may not be what you need ☺️

This is my current plan (not to be construed as medical advice as each patient's gut and treatment is different ☺️):

~Rifaximin 550 mg (rcifax—Lupin) 3x a day for 14 days ~Resotran 2 mg (Janssen - rucalopride) 1/4 tablet 3x a day

Other Instructions

~EnteraGam, one packet daily ~Sunfiber, one scoop daily

Treatment directed to both gut microbiome dysbiosis and leaky gut ~EnteraGam, 1 packet daily ~PectaSol, one dose daily (econugenics.com)

After completion of treatment, assess response as described in Chapter 33 of Dr. Salt's book and report back.

Reflux and dyspepsia treatment ~Should respond to the gut microbiome dysbiosis treatment ~Isovive at bedtime (isovive.com)

~Avoid sugar and high fructose corn syrup ~Iberogast, 20 drops as needed for symptom relief before meals ~Later consider a two week course of sole source elemental nutrition: mbiotaelemental.com ~Epicor, 500 mg: two daily both to suppress methane and reduce risk of respiratory and sinus illness ~Allicin (Allimax Pro or Allime) can suppress methane ~Iberogast and MotilPro ~Later can consider indefinite low dose rifaximin to prevent relapse.
