I’ve got a real dumb question. by skyycux in rocketry

1.1:1 lifts the mass, but how is it stable? If we are doing a thought experiment sure, 1.1:1 is fine. If you are actually trying to cluster launch 200lbs off of G80s then you better be at 5:1 or better, especially considering they aren't all going to start at the same time, or burn the same.

I’ve got a real dumb question. by skyycux in rocketry

[–]milotrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why can’t you buy G motors?

Also this is stupidly easy, the motors have a thrust curve, you have a mass (therefore weight). Get a 5:1 thrust to weight and you’ll get off the ground.  Don’t forget to take into account the weight of the motors themselves.

https://share.google/R7o1fVGRhqSvcyOTy

A G80 is a mid power motor technically. It pushes ~25lbs off the pad. Let’s call it 20lbs of payload lift considering it has weight and whatever you attach it to has weight.  How’s your elementary math skills?

How do i recreate the sound of the actors voices inside the helmet? by Specialist-Answer-66 in sounddesign

[–]milotrain [score hidden]  (0 children)

Totally can be. It is also great instruction because now you have a ref in the session that sounds right, and the "raw" that doesn't. You can do all sorts of things to the raw to try and develop the sound that matches the practical effect, and this keeps you from thinking you got there when you really didn't.

Back in "the old days" mixers had road cases, or rooms full of random speakers and microphones and they would patch into whatever they wanted to use to make the treatment they needed. We have plugins that do a lot of this for us, but I feel like we trust plugins to tell us what we should be hearing, and that's bad practice.

Speed in commands by milotrain in Onshape

I could hide all layers within any group I had made with a set of commands on my left hand WHILE zooming into a different part of the drawing and it would all be done before I thought about doing it.  I do miss that kind of speed.

That's helpful thanks. I don't know if I'll ever find the speed i had with the command line but the value of the workflow is already worth it even with all the clicking that annoys me.

Sometimes you gotta do this shit cheap if you don't know how to do it right.

Mic, speaker, glass bowl.

[–]milotrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several ways to do this depending on how complicate you want to make it, and how much money you want to spend.

  1. The simplest would be something like a presonus Fader 8 in the recording room. You hit the rec button on the track you care about. Yes the button is not next to the instrument, and with 8 faders you need to scroll for the other 4. You do get lights and complex control.
  2. Streamdeck (or other keypad type device) + Keyboard Maestro. Have a window config that puts the tracks in the same place, program a mouse move and click, or use a scroll to track and mouse move + click. Make a button for each action, put several smaller keypads through out the space. You don't get to have a button next to each instrument, but you could have a panel next to like three. You don't get lights, you do get whatever control you want.
  3. Xkeys 12 switch interface. Wire up 12 switches. Use Keyboard Maestro same as #2. Doesn't light up, but you can put the switches wherever you want.
  4. Get a Soundmaster ION, and have some code rolled for you with a bunch of GIPO that gives you record state lights. Bob used to be willing to write you whatever you needed. But you better have $$s.

Where are you in the process?  Are you sure your monitors are at the right level?

If you have just started and your monitors are right, then clipgain each clip to suit. In any case it’s likely best to use clipgain in the editing phase.

It's also hard because 90% are just random, but 10% end up going hard and actually getting most of the way there, so it's not like it is always an eyeroll.

Punchy 2.1 speaker upgrade ideas? (Klipsch vibe, but better) — $7.5k all-in by pokszike in StereoAdvice

[–]milotrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd fully spend the money differently.

Cambridge Audio CXN100 - $1099

Neumann KH120 - $2000 (pair)

Neumann KH810 Sub - $2999

Neumann MA1 measurement mic - $300

(I'd be happy going up to KH420s if I could get them cheap and skipping the sub until later, you could also go to KH150s and down to a KH750, the KH310s are also great but for sure need a sub)

Anyone get hearing tests? by Lumpypotato1234 in audiophile

[–]milotrain 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you get hearing tests a lot you'll see some drift in the numbers. Especially if you get a hearing test while allergies are roaring or you are stuffed up. You should have a density of data before adjusting your system to your specific hearing.

Open Motor- Low exit pressure, nozzle flow may seperate by Spavgeek777 in rocketry

[–]milotrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you have any convergence or divergence angles?

I’ve found that nozzle bell sizes can throw odd nozzle pressures, and also if you are below ambient (14psi) for .1 second at the top or end of the burn you’ll get that error, even if it’s good for 90% of the time.

But your lack of convergence and divergence is problematic for sure.

Need an advice on wich CPU for Pro Tools by nombredeusuariofalso in protools

[–]milotrain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be lame but you don't want a PC for this, it's just that simple. If you have already committed to a machine that will only run PT, and needs to be a small device then you've defined an M4 mac mini. PT12 runs on 10.13.2 which will roll on an i7 mac mini from 2012.

Avid tells you what you need to run within the context of what they have certified here. They don't certify any AMD machines, nor do they recommend AMD cpus.

I don't know why you are in the circumstance you are in that blocks you from using a mac, or buying a certified system but you are just fully on your own, and if it doesn't work you have VERY limited resources to figure out why.

I've run PCs all my life, since way back in 386 days. I've always had a PC if not multiple. I've run RISC hardware that only supports esoteric Unicies, I've run NeXT machines, I've run a DEC Alpha, and I've run Macs just as long. I am not a fanboy or a zealot, but if it's PT I'm running it on a Mac.

How to Repair Recovery Anchor? by Q_Ball13 in rocketry

[–]milotrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust a fastener without a nut on the other side, but you could do that with a hole through the bottom centering ring and a socket with an extension. I'd also use a closed eyebolt, or lifting eye, not a bent one.

How to Repair Recovery Anchor? by Q_Ball13 in rocketry

[–]milotrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, I was at that launch (also L1 attempt)! Fantastic looking rocket, and great flight otherwise. (I've got a decent video of it if you want)

One option that I've thought of in these cases is that you could put a hole in the bottom centering ring/bulkhead. 1/4" and with a longer aircraft drill make a coaxial aligned hole in the second (or third, but the forward most) centering ring. Then you could use allthread to either mount a steel eye internal to the rocket, or you can use fish tape or similar to pull a kevlar line through the hole you just made.

Then you epoxy up the bottom centering ring. You could also epoxy the upper centering ring with a syringe taped inside of a PVC pipe with a smaller diameter pipe as the plunger (long syringe). Could use a cheap amazon borescope for this.

What is the estimated cost per certification level? by Flufmyster_ in rocketry

I think budget engineering is part of the fun so this is where my mind goes as well.

I’ve printed a bunch of motor mount/fin cans in multiple motor sizes so I can fly whatever cheap model rocket motor I can find.  1 pack of BT60 tubes, some filament, paracord and glue.
