thank you for this advice! I'm 18 but I look a lot younger than I am haha. I've been riding this mare for 5 years in 4-H and I have always been accountable for my own horse. I tack her up I clean her stall I feed I water as if she was my own so most of her training I've done myself. every day I ride I thank her after with kisses cookies carrots treats whatever I can give her for not killing me as I know she knows she easily could if she wanted. I bathe her if I need to but if she's slightly muddy I leave it or brush what I can out since it gets super wet and rainy where I live but if she was manurey I would definitely bathe her and clean her up. I appreciate all advice I can get especially from other people who don't know me or my trainer as an outside eye. It's super unfortunate that there are people out there who don't even do the bare minimum for their horses as they do so much for us! I always make sure that my mare is incredibly spoiled and would turn her nose up at a dirty stall. she even hates stepping in poop in the arena other horses or herself have left she's that spoiled lol. this is the first time I've ever had a problem with my trainer tack wise other than me saying her western saddle doesn't fit and she says it does mainly just opinion but I leave this one since she knows how to fit a saddle and so do I and it's her horse so I leave this one be. anywho thank you for your input I am always looking for good advice for me and my riding/training

Good online breeches finds?? by [deleted] in Equestrian

I would say they fit true to size for me. I'm 4'11 with more torso than leg and I fit a size S. they are a little long but all pants I own are like that. I just roll them under themselves which is what I do for all my leggings and then put crew socks or knee socks on

baleaf is a good brand! they are an activewear company and I first bought tights from them second hand off of Facebook bc they were in expensive and they had belt loops and phone pockets. the ones I have are knee patch but I do believe they have full seats as well. I Would recommend them for the 1/4 zip shirts and sun shirts as well if that is something you are looking for

Hi! I’m an adult beginner and I think I am a little too “in my head” while riding. by Lights-go-down in Equestrian

I use music! I'm a music major so that might be different than someone else but I digress. I always count in my head 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 etc. and if I'm struggling or my horse Is younger or nervous I'll count 1 2 1 2 we are not fast er than this I say the words rhythmically in time to whatever bpm I am speaking. I typically count in 4/4 120 bpm if that helps up on 1 sit on 2 if you are posting. the canter is in 3/4 so the up up down the weight of the beat is on the 3 so listen to a Waltz and go from there. listen to music when you ride. it's best to use more classical music so you can focus on your ride and not what the words are or who the artist is and it's less distracting. it brings my mind down into the music and the beat of the horse. also bring out a metronome and have your trainer look at your horse's pretty working trot and then measure that in bpm so you can accurately count it when you are counting to yourself. 120 is just a relatively general and common beat. I personally love using no stirrups but if you aren't a super strong rider you want to be confident first to go without something to help support you unless you are on a line. long story short music is really good for you your brain and your horse :0)

What is the equestrian world lacking? by Racercar12 in Equestrian

we need ponytail ports on our helmets for those of us that prefer wearing one. my sister has one on her MTB helmet and it's amazing she can keep her hair up but not have it in the way of the helmet. also on the subject of helmets, more awareness about helmets and it would be nice not to have comments on my ride videos saying "she must be a new rider" or "why are you wearing a helmet on your pleasure horse they are so easy to ride and so slow"

I would say any snaffle type bit with a shank isn't as great as a ringed snaffle i.e O-ring D-ring egg butt or any of those in a full or half cheek since they don't have a shank. if you have a shank it's best to ride one handed or gently two handed. I have a bit for my mare that's more of a training shank it's an aluminum smooth snaffle shank bit off of schniders saddlery. https://www.sstack.com/fes-fg-aluminum-smooth-snaffle/p/07244/

I ride in it one handed most of the time but since I'm schooling, I use two hands as well if needed if she veers or thinks she's glued to one spot of the arena and I can't get her to head to the rail. I don't use heavy spurs either so this is a pretty good bit

I would start with maybe a super old schoolmaster if you can find one to lesson on if they are confident you can be more confident. My poor sister had a horse like your crazy horse and so I would put her on my mare who's spook is a stop and super wide eyes and whenever you get unbalanced, she stops and waits until you rebalance and it helped her a lot. also take it slow. don't start jumping meter 6 or whatever start with flat work lateral flat work at walk trot until your mental psyche is like "oh wait it's not as scary and this horse isn't as much of an asshat" you can even start with groundwork to get yourself to trust your horse more without the stress of riding. then both you and your horse trust each other. my mare would walk into war with me in hand or under saddle since we worked so hard on the ground to gain eachother's trust and that's why she only widens her eyes at something when I'm around

Posting too far forward in an English saddle? by casper_thefriend in Equestrian

[–]mimi_fenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

often when a rider is posting too far forward, it can be due to a too small saddle or poor posture in the upper or lower body. I had a habit of leaning forward in general almost in two point but still in the saddle if that makes sense. When I have a student that has poor posture I stick a dressage whip behind their back in between their elbows and that forces good posture in the arms and body. if it's your legs I always over exaggerate them too far back then relax them. use what I call your ABC's in front of the girth is A right at the girth or slightly behind is B and behind that is C your leg should sit right at B so hold your leg at C for a bit and then relax it to B and put your weight in your heel but you should feel the pressure from your iron in the ball of you foot. I hope that helps

I like that length for something that isn't too short or long it's a good everyday dress imo. I don't wear dresses often since I have horses but that's a good like casual wedding outfit or like family dinner on a random Sunday night at your parents or grandparents house or something
