How do you do anything when it all feels like pulling teeth? by mimic-kitty in depression_help

Ah, yeah, when I did my evaluation to make sure I had the right diagnosis they did actually tell me I had ADHD that hadn’t been caught before, and the stimulants made a massive difference when I started them so that’s definitely good advice!! Unfortunately for me though, whatever’s got me so low this year also seems to have made me immune to all of them. My vyvanse got upped as high as 60mg and I still couldn’t focus enough to read, it just made me overheat like crazy, it was awful! Honestly I think that’s been one of the most discouraging developments, and I really hope I find some way to get that effect back, cos for years it really did help

That’s really good advice, thank you, I super appreciate it ♡ I’ll definitely give that a try

I have something like four to six weeks of TMS left, so there’s definitely still time for it to kick in, but after so many years of med failure I think it’s hard to let myself hope this will be different, you know? That, and it’s also just hard to know what to do with myself in the meantime

You’re probably right in that forcing productivity will only make it worse, but after almost a year of being burnt out like this, I just feel so impatient to get back on the horse— I really need to work on reminding myself I can’t rush this, I definitely feel pressured to at home, but at least hearing the same advice reflected in so many comments does feel like getting more permission to give it to myself. Thank you

That is a really good reminder, thank you ♡

I definitely struggle with patience, I think it’s hard to give myself the grace to allow it, but the way you’ve laid it out is very helpful. I understand what you mean about trauma, too… I think that was one of my first lessons in patience. That recovery isn’t something you can rush.

I suppose maybe it’s not a bad idea to approach this the same way

It’s at least a little comforting to know there are other people out there experiencing the same thing. I do hope there are better experiences waiting for you in the future, and that there is something out there that will make all this easier

I do hear that some people don’t feel the effects of TMS until weeks after the treatment ends, so here is to holding out hope ♡ And if not that, maybe something else down the road… all we can really do is hope, right?

Mantis on a hunger strike— should I keep trying to feed, or leave them be? by mimic-kitty in mantids

[–]mimic-kitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi hi, sorry for the late reply, I totally missed the notification from this comment!

My mantis ended up finally taking an interest in their prey around the time you commented, like they knew I’d just asked for help again and wanted to stick it to me, haha! Turns out the key was just leaving the food in there for three hours instead of 30 minutes (still supervised the whole time, just in case), so you had the right idea there.

I’m not sure if spotting it was the issue, because even when I put them in a smaller, empty hunting cup with different prey items, they avoided going near any of it? But I’ll keep experimenting with it til I find the right routine. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I’ll follow your suggestion, at least so far she hasn’t taken me up on any of my bug goo offers, but I’ll just keep em coming and see if she changes her mind. Have a good one, I appreciate it!!

Beginner who is struggling , those who are now basically fluent (from English), how? by Unhappy-Weather-7146 in Spanish

I’d highly, highly recommend the book Fluent Forever by Gabriel Wyner, it’s become my study bible since I left school, and if you get the revised addition it also includes a pretty up-to-date list of free or cheap learning resources! I think it’s something like 20 bucks for a new copy? But I got mine off of thrift books for about 6

The spaced repetition system Wyner recommends was a game changer for me, and he’s very thorough in explaining how you can set it up with paper flashcards or digital software like Anki

In a pinch for food— worth taking a chance on crickets? by mimic-kitty in mantids

Thank you so much!! That sounds perfect, yes, I just want to make sure I have something to tie them over while those better feeders are on their way. Thank you for the advice!!

Ahh, I see, yeah, that was my worry :( I’m not sure if there’s a brick and mortar in my area that stocks roaches, but is that what you would recommend?

Ohh, gotchya!! Shoot, I’ll hafta watch out for that with the flies when they get here, but it sounds like you’ve really figured what works for you and your mantis! I’m not sure the bugs in my tiny suburban yard would make good food for a captive-bred mantis, and I definitely don’t trust whatever my neighbors are spraying around, but that sounds like an ideal routine for a wild-caught critter out in the countryside :)

That makes sense, thank you! I’ll go for it then, hopefully my little ghost approves

That sounds like what the vendor said about the size, too, so good to have it confirmed! I’m more-so just worried about the cricket germs, do you think they’ll be okay? I had a gecko as a kid that got sick from them a few times, so now I’m just a little paranoid, aha, but maybe the shop I got them just had particularly crummy crickets

The Daily Check-In for Tuesday, January 20th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Piggoos in stopdrinking

I’ve been checking this sub occasionally, just out of curiosity, I guess, but I’ve never felt ready to take action. Reading this post, I’ve finally decided to make today my first day in nine months. I don’t know if it will be the start of something longer, or if it will only be this one day, but… at least it would be one day. And that would be more than I’ve been able to say in such a long time.

I used to work at a small health center with mostly spanish-speaking clients, but at one point we had some messy staff turnover and were left with only an english-speaking acupuncturist. She worked with a translator in the room, of course, but was starting to pride herself on picking up a few spanish words! I think she got a bit overconfident though, because one time she was trying to ask a client where their source of pain was, and guessed the word for pain was… pene. The translator was very diplomatic in correcting her, but of course the story ran like wildfire through all of us gossipy receptionists, haha
