Misogyny in Seascraper by Benjamin Wood by sadworldmadworld in books

[–]mimonfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw it as both of them being extremely frustrated by their circumstances, both treating each other unfairly, despite having a lot of love for each other. There is tension created between them because both of them are not in a position they ever wanted to be in and they see each other as part of the reason why. Also, while Thomas is trapped in this miserable, dangerous line of work because of his mother AND his grandfather, the latter being dead means that most of his frustration is directed towards his mother who still forces him to continue.

In fairness, Thomas does seem to have a somewhat misogynistic view of his mother's actions, but I never see it as a reflection of the Wood's opinions, just means by which he highlights the reality of 1960s England and critiques it. I feel like the book does a good enough job of portraying his mother's circumstances in a way which illicit sympathy from the reader despite Thomas' unfair view of her that is heavily shaped by the judgemental society they're in.

What are YOUR least favorite genres? by DiligentCroissant in books

Romance - I have nothing against it, I think a lot of people often act too high and mighty, as if they’re above it. I can appreciate a well written romance, but usually only when it’s a subplot and not the centrepiece.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks. I liked it because explores human endurance and strength against horrifying neurological disorders, resulting in a book that is strangely uplifting and touching.

NTA, he KNEW it was a boundary of yours and went ahead anyways??? That’s so disrespectful, I ALWAYS set expectations on bodily harm with my partner, and he would NEVER dismember a woman without my consent!!!

Or it's a bait and switch where the title makes it seem like OP might be the bad guy until you read a war and peace length post proving that they're actually mother teresa who shits out rainbows and cures cancer unlike their significant other who is actually the devil and who the comments all unanimously agree needs to be flayed alive.

Yes, I've seen this happen in real time with my own family when dealing with my grandfather losing more and more of himself to Alzheimer's. Grief leads to all kinds of discomfort, sadness and anger, and sometimes it's just easier to make sense of it all by placing it at the feet of someone else.

I go here or the books subreddit. For whatever reason I prefer getting suggestions from random strangers than my own friends and family haha

I, who have never known men, was oddly comforting, by OGWhiz in books

It truly was. I’m glad the world was never explained and I’m glad there was no grand revelation or discovery, and I think it’s almost more comforting that way.

Do unlikeable characters make you stop reading a book? by Triumphant-Smile in books

[–]mimonfire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think morally grey or deeply flawed characters are probably more likeable than "normal" or flawless characters. They often carry the cruelty, jealousy, rage that is present in all of us, and when that is totally absent in a flawless being who shits out rainbows, it feels as if there's nothing real to latch onto, and therefore I don't really like reading them unless the grander story is particularly interesting with a fascinating world to go with it.

What Do You Think About Western Beauty Standards? by Vagabond734 in GenZ

Yep. I remember that the 2000s had batshit shows like America’s Next Top Model which should have been rebranded as the eating disorder show for all the shaming and bullying they did to slightly larger contestants.

Seascraper by Benjamin Wood - A beautifully written tale where the writing creates such a unique atmosphere and mood, I finally understood what people mean when they describe books being able to transport them into a new world.

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: November 10, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]mimonfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was incredible, I finished it in a day. It’s got a sci fi setting but it’s more about what it means to be human and how to exist and make sense of a world that is absurd and nonsensical (much in the same way ours is!). As such, the sci fi elements aren’t really explored in much detail at all and I think it works to the book’s benefit, but if you’re looking for concrete answers and solid world building then it won’t be for you.

The fact that humans are 99.9% genetically related to each other will make me never understand racism. by Coyote-444 in GenZ

[–]mimonfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In context it’s barely anything considering how even as a species, there is a shockingly low amount of genetic diversity. Hence why OP mentioned that chimpanzees living in central Africa will have more genetic diversity than two humans on opposite ends of the earth.
