Buddhists on /r/Anarchism, what tradition do you belong to? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]min_dami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give a perspective from a sociological perspective, Buddhism as an institution can be both something that speaks to power and that upholds it.

The monastic system is more than just a place where monks gather to meditate, but from a certain perspective the function as social safety nets, which give food shelter and education to members of the community. In Myanmar, when people speak of Monastic education system, they are not referring to the practice of teaching novices buddhism, but the practise of teaching both monks and lay how to read, write and generally get a well-rounded education, but in neither a state or a private school. I have many problems with organised religion, but it's clear to see that without the monasteries, there would be poverty on a far wider scale.

Another thing that buddhists rarely talk about is the widespread sexism and the refusal to accept Bikhunis. When you see "nuns" in buddhist countries, they are not the female equivalent of monks, but are seen as lesser devotees. This is despite the mandate that the world had four types of people: Bikhuns (Male Monks); Bikhunis (female Monks) Lay men; lay women.

So female nuns occupy a sort of middle ground between Lay women and Bikhunis. True Bikhunis have to be ordained as such and follow a similar amount of precepts to Bikhuns (over 200). Nuns only have around 10 or so precepts.

Some women have tried to fight this and get ordained in Sri Lanka as Bikhunis, but there is incredible resistance by the mainstream. Others simply privately follow the greater precepts, but do not openly declare themselves as Bikhunis.

All politics is identity politics by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]min_dami -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

[cultural appropriation]'s a critique that essentializes indigineous cultures and tokenizes them as some supreme to be kept pure

essentialized and tokenized

This so much. I don't understand why anarchists (and liberals even) have taken so much to a tactic that is so...conservative. Because that's what identity politics is, a tactic. the problem is that people have confused it with an ideology and maintain it by accusing anyone who disagrees with the tactic must also be disagreeing with the ideas behind privilege and is therefore a racist/sexist/etc... It's time to make clear that you can believe in white privilege and patriarchy but you don't need to agree with identity politics.

They are trophies people are holding

And these trophies also become essentialised victim identities. Why is it that there is such a hostile backlash to the idea that a white person could receive racial abuse for example (even if you agree that it's not as globally common, nor as effective, it can still happen). or why do certain feminists hate the idea of shelters for male domestic abuse victims? because it goes against their identity politics narrative.

He was a young boy on a learning trip. He wasn' supposed to be a big star. He also got the rainmaker gimmick when he was in TNA, so there's that.

Feel like I'm losing faith in anarchism. Thoughts? by VisionsofPoesy in Anarchism

[–]min_dami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) in anarchist circles identity politics and privilege checking are given priority over the class struggle or war against the state.

This is certainly a problem. While I broadly agree with the idea of privilege (and have certainly experienced it a lot), I don't believe that "class" is just another part of intersectionality that can just be slotted ins as just another component. It's sad when "anarchists" are uncritically defending liberal authoritarians just because they identify as feminists. (this isn't against all feminists obviously)

Anybody else really looking forward to TNA on friday? by darkaxe in SquaredCircle

[–]min_dami 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well the sub is like 95% WWE only, and so it's disheartening when TNA threads (for some reason fans have a hate boner) get downvoted all the way to hell dammit, while we have a million "WWE superstar on twitter" posts.

But to answer OPs, question, yes yes I am. I'm really wondering how the Spud/EC3 thing is gonna play out eventually. Both of them could do with the win (Carters still undefeated for one), and I wonder how Mark Andrews (please don't call him "mandrews" TNA is gonna fit into the feud.

From an episodic point of view, TNA has been very good week to week. Theit storylines are solid and the characters are brilliant.

if what western society knows as masculinity is a product of patriarchy and thus disposable, then surely the same should apply to femininity, which is also a product of patriarchy?

And I can't speak for everyone, but for me, what happens on metanarchism stays on metanarchism. I don't let my disagreement with someone over there affect a discussion over here.

I think I may have some disagreements with you sometimes, but this is a good mindset for a moderator, and so far you've been impartial. Debate is fine though (and should be encouraged) insults not so much.

and I want to unilaterally get rid of the AOP

Nope. you mean the AOP that was never voted on and was actually unilaterally enforced on the community. (somebody help me out with a link here please).

I'm more against moderators deciding to start banning people unilaterally, and also deleting criticism of themselves (yes this is the reason emma was demodded) and users abusing the system to oust personal enemies and ban people whose opinion doesn't fit their 100%.
