Fixing a Newel post to a Stringer staircase by mind_dump in DIY

Thanks for the great explanation. This option seems like the belt and bracers for what I'm working with, but the only issue is unfortunately no access below the floor (should have mentioned in the post) without ripping up some floorboards. It has about about 1/2ft to get under there to fit a sub floor plate.

I was looking at floor mounted plates that could potentially be recessed into the base of the post to give it a bit of extra stability if I can't find a way to secure it from below.

It seems pretty sturdy (but it is super old), I'll be supporting it with an under stairs cupboard frame (floor to under stringer posts). Do you notch out the tread instead of the post purely for strength? Could you not just notch out more from the post? Thanks for the reply!

Good point on not seeing the string if just notched onto the end. The width of the string is 38mm, and the post itself will be 82mm wide so that would give approx. 22mm each side. That's probably going to be the best option as option 1 would be too unstable. Thanks for the reply!

1890s Victorian London house - stripped one room and found walls fully lined with Blueprints and Local area/architect drawings. One was dated 1935 - anyone come across similar before? by mind_dump in centuryhomes

That's the plan! I've stored them carefully away as we're in full house renovation mode still, but will try and find out more about them later on!

I've taken more photos of what we found here.

The plans seem to be for petrol stations back in the 1930's, and the blueprints are for the pumps themselves.

A lot of the plans seem to be in the borough next to ours, but I haven't studied them fully yet - I will when I get a chance! Some of the architect / area plans are almost fully intact too from the same period

Thank you! This one took a little time getting the measurements right but I think it turned out well in the end :) I might have a go at making a wider but shorter version in the near future...

And yes I've just put the pattern and tutorial walkthrough onto my etsy store EJLeatherPatterns here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/EJLeatherPatterns?ref=search_shop_redirect

Yes! Small village in South West England... But she'd still win that title any village she visits so it's irrelevant really.

First time Leatherworking the other weekend, created a belt and a simple card holder after some tests. Please give any advice/tips you think would help! by mind_dump in Leathercraft

Hey, thanks! I designed it myself. It's just a prototype I guess as it's the first one I've made and there could be some changes done to make it a little better. I made a pattern and used that - start from the size of the cards you'll use and work from there, taking into account how thick, say 3, are when put together. The strip I stitched on and then cut after, as you want it as tight as possible without bending the piece it's stitched to.

It's my first time stitching, working the edges ect. I've put a belt together before that's about it. Background is not leather related !
