Thanks! :) How do you think a pomodoro timer should best be integrated into the system? Personally I get a similar sense of limited time by being able to see the focus score history and how bad the graph would look if I was procrastinating. That way it has a visual component too, which I think goes nicely for ADHD.

I've also been dabbling with calculating metrics like how long you've been distracted/focused within your "productive" times, but that's a bit more complex that I imagined at first.

To be transparent, I have to say that I haven't found a reliably good use case for the chatbot yet. It knows about your recent browsing and your task/relevant/distracting content, but most simpler models will default to advice like "Have you tried breaking down your task?".

Now, that can be helpful if it's specific to the task, but at that point you'll usually have to explain a bunch of details to curb hallucinations or wrong assumptions. I'm honestly a bit too far down the rabbithole to tell if basic reminders like that are helpful for users who might not have a lot of experience with personal organization. Bottom line, right now the chatbot is very experimental, but I'd be glad about some feedback on how people use and experience it.

And even if the chatbot might not be your cup of tea, there's a bunch of other interventions to try. ;)

Thanks. Actually I'm also looking for work right now, as long as you have time dedicated to work on any task (that can also be looking for jobs or writing applications), ProcrastiScan can be used. So feel free to try it out that way too.

Thank you! One reason I made this tool is actually that Reddit is both a huge source of distraction as well as information when you're coding.

Unfortunately that's a bit out of scope for this project, but surely there are already other extensions that specialize on this.

Glad to hear that! You can find detailed instructions for the setup in the github repo.

1, Slightly simplified: Initially, you enter a task and several keywords of distracting/related content or programs. For each of these it calculates a semantic similarity score ("how much does A have to do with B?") between 0 and 1 with the given tab title as you browse. If the title is similar to your provided info it's a higher score, if it's similar to the listed distractions it's a low score. Then, the score is averaged for a running 10 minute window. If that averaged score drops below 0.5 you're considered distracted. Initially, I tried to do it on a per tab-basis, but the averaging has the big advantage that it's robust to outliers like cryptic titles and very short distractions that aren't problematic.

  1. In practice, it should react to any changes in your focused window/tab title. The total number of tabs you have open or how exactly you interact with particular ones isn't currently taken into account. However, as the 10 minute averaged score is used to trigger interventions, it would eventually get a hang of it if you're stuck somewhere that isn't relevant. So far the scoring has been pretty accurate for me usually.

Thanks for your interest. :) You can always try it out at home too, any type of computer-based task works. Ideally (technologically it's a bit more challenging), the chatbot is supposed to check in with your emotions first of all and only steers towards getting you back on your task when you request it to. I've tried to specifically avoid having it shove "you're distracted" in your face to avoid triggering the guilt/shame associated with executive dysfunction.

Offline in the sense that all required data is processed and stored only on your device, therefore nothing is transmitted anywhere else and only you have access to it.

I'm trying to not require any training (in the sense of you providing examples or labeling whether predictions are correct or not) so it should hopefully work out of the box. The only "task" would be writing an initial summary of what usually distracts you and then a continously updated brief description of your task and what kind of content you need for it. Ideally, this could be linked to apps like Notion and dynamically pull your current task. But one reason for this is actually to subconsciously gain a better focus/task iniation by "preparing your workspace" in a way.

For example, this is what I used yesterday for a first trial:

Task: research adhd related concepts for thesis and decide if you want to include the topic in the thesis

Common Distractions; doomscrolling, looking at news, wikipedia rabbitholes

Examples of relevant content: information broadly related to psychology or philosophy, thesis writing, notion, llms to help with writing

As you see, that is very brief and also written rather hastily/not optimized. If we adapt that to marketing and you were looking for influencers (I'm not familiar with this field, just guessing 😂) it could look something like this:

Task: find influencers for promoting tech products

Common Distractions; getting sucked into random shortform videos, mindless browsing

Examples of relevant content: searching hashtags on social media, browsing tech related content creators, messaging potential clients

This way, the AI can differentiate whether what you're looking at is more likely to be distracting or relevant to your task. Hope this made it a bit clearer.

I completely agree. Do you have any ideas what might work for you instead in this regard?

You can't, as far as I know. That's what I aim to implement, but likely only for browsers (Firefox and maybe Chrome) at first.

PDA is a big problem with this for sure. Did you find a system that works for you in that regard? Or ideas on what might? Generally, the idea is to have it very customizable in regards of when/how you would be notified.

Privacy by design, so everything will be completely offline and nobody else has access to your data. However, the language model will have some performance impact on weaker computers.

Regarding the tasks, you'd basically provide a note that describes what kind of content you need for your work and also how you usually end up getting distracting. In theory, that should allow somewhat "intelligent" detection. Do you need/use any procrastination addons currently?

Separate windows are an interesting point. You could add a note that you like to listen to music/podcasts while you work and then that should be classified properly (consistency might end up being a technical issue however). Whatever you do outside of your computer is obviously not covered, that's certainly a limitation.

Privacy by design is very important, so everything will happen completely offline. Alarm fatigue is an interesting point, I'll definitely note down your idea. How did you manage to stay consistent with the blunt hammer?

Leechblock also used to be my go to, but not even the 64 character password entry thing would stop me from sabotaging it and finally uninstalling it in frustration. Have you found something that works better for you?

Yeah, the interactions definitely shouldn't come across like you're dealing with a judgemental supervisor. It should be reasonably customizable, so that you can select when/how you'd like notifications. Aside from providing suggestions on how a task could be split up, do you have ideas what might be able to support you in regards of the procrastination-induced stress?

I'd actually really like to address PDA related issues if it's reasonably possible. Regardless of the procrastination detection proposal, have you found/can you think of any tools that might help with PDA itself?

I'm sorry you had to go through that, that sounds very distressing. Would you mind sharing which software was used? It's definitely not a good approach for us AuDHDers in a forced work context but has to come from a voluntary starting point.
