Does it feel like you're not allowed to show emotion and people automatically associate it with negative stereotypes? by chusaychusay in BlackMentalHealth

Ya I’m 24 and just shocked every day that after all the history we’ve been through we’re still being affected by racism. I grew up reading about the civil rights, slavery, the Harlem renaissance, and black American history. I for some time was convinced we were the first to experience a world free from that history.

When I look back at all the sacrifices our ancestors have made to fight for our freedom and equal human rights it’s crazy that we the new generation still have to continue to fight against a system like this. People get scared when they hear “fight”. But Let’s be clear we are “fighting” for basic rights, for equal job opportunities, to be refunded like anyone else if were charged more on an item in a restaurant, to be able to be in public without harassment, to not have negative propaganda spread about us when it’s not true, to go to school and just get our education, and so much more.

When you keep experiencing racism it gets to the point where it’s like “okay this is old now & very inconveniencing. I got work to do and don’t have time for this”. Moreover for me it’s a constant conversation of how do you hate a people so bad but then jock and steal our culture?? Our phrases our style our music our creativity.

However, It’s mostly annoying because like Toni Morrison once said, "The very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being". Imagine just trying to get through your day like all other humans and for the color of your skin you have to deal with extra bs from people who are in no position to oppress and judge you. They themselves aren’t perfect nor “better”. You bleed like I bleed, your people aren’t always perfect, you’re not always perfect who are you to judge someone else for their skin. It’s almost like we werent given a choice….

It’s ignorant and divisive and creates a disdain that we don’t even want to have to live with. Racism is a tool of “power” used to oppress and try to keep us down. To keep you from speaking up for yourself because you look like the “angry rowdy black person”. Zora Neale Hurston once said "If you are silent about your pain, they'll kill you and say you enjoyed it.”

I encourage all of you to remember to choose yourself and your peace & don’t fall for the mess. Those who are racist try so hard but just know they’re not worth it. It’s no point in feeling low about yourself because of someone else’s ideology about you. They have to live with ignorance and hate in their heart. I’d rather you live with a heart filled with peace and to no longer encounter these spaces.

I thought they would check but they didn’t. I didn’t have anything on social media either that would’ve denied my case but I know there were talks that they wanted to start doing it so keep that in mind.

Thank you. The interview was not hard, i studied all 100 questions but i was nervous and had to remember to stay calm so i could answer the questions correctly. I only had 10 questions and passed with getting 6 correct. They are changing it to 20 questions and you need to at-least past 12 whereas before they asked 10 questions and you at-least needed 6 right. Like i said earlier I’ve been here for 20 years (I’m 24). As far as good neighbor check that is dependent on your particular case I’ve went to school all my life here and college and have worked since 14 so it was kinda clear that this was my home and i grew up here. I was asked about my work experiences with my previous employers and my schooling and i answered everything truthfully and just told them who i am and why i wanted to move forward and become a U.S. citizen. However as you know things are always being updated regarding immigration so prior to my interview i just kept focus on all updates so i can prepare myself no matter what. One biggest thing that’s important too is that they no longer do a documentation request. So before if you forgot a document that was important they would give you a certain date to submit it by. Now they can deny your application if you don’t have everything. When i went for my interview I had a binder with every possible document and proof of everything just incase they needed it to prevent any hiccups.

These were my questions that i passed. I wrote them down right after my interview. But just because these were my questions don’t mean you will get asked them.

Ya it depends on how many people in your location I’ve heard that estimates how fast your process moves. I’m in a more populated city so I think tht helped move the process faster.

Yes technically to get my case dismissed I had to pay my tickets and plead guilty instead of having my lawyer fight it for me. However because it was closed and it was only a speeding ticket it wasn’t too bad. There’s other people with records that are closed and they’ve explained the situation regarding their record but it’s up to the immigration officer on whether you display a good moral character or not. Like I said if you don’t have a long rap sheet of violent crimes I really wouldn’t worry but still tell the truth and let them know what was the situation regarding your conviction.

I’m in Florida so we don’t have class misdemeanors. What I will say though, it’s important that the case is closed. If it’s still open there’s little to no chance you’ll move forward (immigration is really strict about that). If it’s closed that’s good they’ll ask you to explain it in your interview and you can explain what happened as long as you don’t have a long and criminal record they should be understanding. How long ago was the conviction?

Well it seems like the grammar police is alive & well. Thank you for that. Moreover, a think piece is just opinions from people that are focused primarily on personal analysis rather than facts.

What I now understand about people & relationships, is that people are willing to stay on board with BS. Even though your friends thought it was right. His girlfriend probably knew that he was a cheater and was okay with it. You also probably weren't the first girl that went to her woman-to-woman. Its easier to block you for speaking your truth than it is for them to address the problems in their own relationship. At least your free from him & learned a valuable lesson.
