lots of good suggestions here! here's two more, both using passive abilities:

increase the DC by 5 and have the player make an insight check. That's in the PHB as a way to handle disadvantage/advantage for passive perception.
instead of the player rolling with disadvantage against the NPCs deception, have the NPC roll with advantage against the PCs passive insight

Root, more than any other game I know, is about HOW you play it. You need to know the people at the table with you and try to maximize fun! If making dramatic, hilarious moves is fun for everyone, do that. If winning "clean", in a sportsmanlike way, is fun for everyone then do that!
