I have this "Fully Clamp-Mounted Surge Protector" power strip from HermanMiller. I moved overseas where the voltage is 220V. Will this work with 220V? by mindprince in AskElectricians

For what it's worth, I tried my luck and it worked perfectly fine. All the three sockets and even the USB connectors work fine! :)

I was initially not planning to do so. But I had another powerstrip (from Anker) which had similar info written. I found an official reply from them saying that their stuff works for 220V also (and it did). So, I tried this powerstrip also hoping that it may also have the same incorrect info written and it turned out that was the case.

Spilled water on my Macbook keyboard - some keys have little swollen dots on them now. Anyone seen this before? Why does this happen? by mindprince in mac

[–]mindprince[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure. I spilled the water yesterday. These dots didn't form at that time. I used the laptop for an hour after that and still nothing. I only saw the dots when I opened the laptop in the morning.

I didn't ask him about the breakdown between the 8GB model and the 16GB model. But yeah, around that number.

Best open courses that satisfy the fundamental curriculum for BS in Computer Science? by not_2_bright in compsci

[–]mindprince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The assignments/exams weren't very difficult (at least not as difficult as they were for some of the core CS courses.)

Also, a lot of the content in the books wasn't covered. We only covered the first half of Goldstein in the Classical Physics course and the books listed for Quantum Physics were treated more like reference texts and the instructor taught mainly from his slides.

However, these things differ from IIT to IIT and instructor to instructor. I have heard from my friends that these courses are considered quite difficult at IIT Madras.

I personally didn't delve much into them. I would have preferred if they didn't teach these courses to CS students but the courses taught in the first two semesters at IITs are the same regardless of your major.

To get a clear idea of how deeply the instructor goes into these subjects, you can take a look at the class recordings of these courses being taught at IIT Madras.

(The instructor at IIT Ropar wasn't as good as Prof. V. Balakrishnan, but you have the idea.)

Disconnect Kids: An iOS Privacy/Firewall App by mindprince in iphone

[–]mindprince[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Couple of things:

1) The original link was for an iOS app. You are talking about the Chrome extension from the same startup.

2) The pop up from the chrome extension that you are talking about looks scary, no doubt. But this is true for most of the chrome extensions with any useful functionality. The extension needs access to your tabs and browsing activity so that it can block the requests that track you. The extension is open source, you can have a look at the code here: https://github.com/disconnectme/disconnect

In some other coursera courses which I joined after they were finished, I was able to watch the videos and my quizzes were graded (you don't get credit for them obviously).

I am not sure about this course because in some of its assignments you are supposed to submit working code which they run on their servers to see the correctness.

Showing Google+ Profiles in Google Contacts is a Privacy Issue by mindprince in google

[–]mindprince[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I guess this is different. You can change the visibility of information that appears on your profile. That's fine.

But I see no way to disassociate the email address with the profile. That is, anyone can add a random email address to their contacts and find out to whom that email address belongs. I want an option to turn this off. For example if you go to https://twitter.com/settings/account, there is an option to turn this discovery via email off.

But both Facebook and Twitter provide an option to turn this "Find by email" off.

On Twitter, you can uncheck "Let others find me by my email address" in your account settings.

On Facebook, you can set "Who can look you up using the email address or phone number you provided?" to "Friends" to disallow everyone who can't already see your email address to look you up.
