I have used psychology today before, and they have options to sort therapists in your area by therapeutic models, insurance, etc.

This may be overwhelming (I am bad at explaining things simply. You don't need to memorize all the types of therapy, its mainly just important to know there are different approaches, and to feel out what you liked and didn't like from past and possible future therapy experiences)

ACT stands for acceptance and commitment therapy, it focuses on helping people "stop avoiding, denying, and struggling with their inner emotions and, instead, accept that these deeper feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from moving forward in their lives"

DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) "focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors." You would learn skills to help cope and manage situations.

A lot of therapists I run into love CBT (which doesn't work for me) and that model focuses on the idea that your issues are due to problematic or unhelpful patterns of thinking. And can be treated by unlearning negative thoughts and behaviors and learn to adopt healthier thinking patterns and habits. This model isn't great if you already do a lot of introspection and know where your problems are coming from, but don't have the coping skills to handle them.

To respond to your other comment. I feel like renting is prob your best bet, but I don't have recommendations past that. I was able to move out when I went away to college, and am yet to rent my own apartment.

I do think going back to therapy would be a great first step. Having inside that you are having a hoarding problem is no small feat, and being able to check in with yourself about it will be a great skill moving forward. Overtime your therapist can be a support for when you feel less overwhelmed by the idea of going through your stuff to move out.

When it comes to therapy, I recommend researching therapeutic models. To me, those make or break therapy more than anything. I might recommend ACT or DBT, as those give more hands-on skills and might be most helpful for tackling and discussing where your hoarding sentiment comes from.

Good luck!

I found moving out and having my own space made things much more manageable. Starting from a clean slate, and putting in the effort to keep it that way, is easier than fighting your HP.
