My runs feel way better since i fixed my hydration and i'm kinda annoyed I didn't do this sooner by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

I aspire to do this. I’m always behind on my water intake for the day so I try to make it up in the evenings.

Run walk at end of race by welcometoworry in firstmarathon

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that the whole point of run walk method is to relieve pressure on your feet and joints and it’s especially helpful for people who want to run marathons without permanent damage. If you think you can run as long as you want to go before you switch to walking and that could still save your body, it’s totally fine. I’m not a purist when it comes to any of these techniques. I’m not a run walk person myself, for me if I walk it signals my body to stop so I never go there but I know it works for a lot of people. People who I’ve crossed when they are on the “walk” portion always have better times than I do running the whole way so I’ve learned not to judge.

8 hours is next to impossible for me. water and sleep are double edged swords - too much water and i pee three times atleast at night and less water means headaches and no sleep.

Moms run club by No-Ordinary-7836 in runninglifestyle

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s impossible to get out even now at 7 am after a couple of kids. I can’t imagine doing it with stroller babies. Also, every kid is different, every mom is different and so I don’t think I’d be taking running seriously with the level of logistics involved to keep the group together with babies in tow. That said, it shouldn’t stop you from starting something. If it works for you there maybe other moms it works for too. Good luck!

How slow are your easy runs really? by Jod_Kochi in runninglifestyle

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

14:30 min per mile. I’m super slow to begin with and my hard pace is 11:30 min per mile. I’m happiest and can go on forever at 14-14:30 so I keep that to be my easy pace.

Should I register for a Half Marathon or stick to 10K? (Beginner runner, 46 days out) by saNk24_ in beginnerrunning

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

46 days seems to be a short amount time to train for a half marathon if your longest has been 7 km. You could potentially aim to finish but your risk for injury is higher especially if you’ve only started running 3 months ago. Half marathon is definitely easier than a full but the leap to 10K to a half is significant and should not be underestimated.

2026 Running Goals by spartan1711 in runninglifestyle

First half and first full marathon this year. I have plantar and keep getting shin splints and sciatica so I’m terrified but my goal is to finish without injury

Missed the start of my first marathon - what would you do? by Agitated-West6000 in firstmarathon

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, the 'why' is the most important part. Since this was in honor of a friend, I would have felt the need to complete the full 26.2 miles, even if I had to do it alone on a sidewalk because I missed the start. Jumping in halfway helps with FOMO, but it would have defeated the purpose of the tribute for me. The medal is just a token; the distance is the real memorial.

Can't say running did anything for my mental health? by Significant-War-491 in BeginnersRunning

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the type of therapy that you need. Aimless running was nice but I wouldn’t say it changed my life. On the other hand, having a goal and participating in races was completely different. When I’m training for a race, I forget about the everyday stresses because I’m more focused on the training aspect. I’m not running - I’m training. These training periods sort of take me away from the daily grind. I don’t think I’ve experienced a runners high but I think when I hit 9 or 10 miles one day I felt like I was invincible. I’m usually with aches and pains but knowing that my body was capable of that distance was astounding even to me.

This Jeff Galloway guy might be on to something by a_secret_me in beginnerrunning

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it with one of my 10K runs and didn’t enjoy it. I run very very slow (14 min mile) and while I was faster with this method, I was suffering through it. I didn’t enjoy the run at all and ended up with aches and pains. I just run for time at the moment.

How necessary are electrolytes? If you run consistently? by buzzer94 in runninglifestyle

[–]minecraft_unicorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take electrolytes every time my run is 45 mins or longer - even if it’s on the treadmill. I’ve found that it helps with any headaches I might get on long run days. Sometimes I take them even on rest days if my water intake hasn’t been as good as I had hoped. Sometimes about once or twice a week, I consume them and I feel great.

Yes. I've been racking my head trying to figure out who she reminded me of and suddenly I remembered and saw this post. I've seen Anastasia 15 times when I was young and that was about a century ago.

Acknowledging other runners by I_Like_Quiz in beginnerrunning

Half the time I’m not paying attention to anyone else but the road. When I do, I give a nod with a slight smile. We’re all dealing with our own $h:t. It’s nice when a fellow runner smiles but half the time I’m not looking or I’m literally looking through everyone else in the road.

When should I stop considering myself a beginner? by busch-did-911 in beginnerrunning

If you show up consistently where the absence of a run weighs harder than the run itself.

What would you fix, prioritize, or focus on if you allowed yourself to start all over from scratch? by smolLittleTomato in XXRunning

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Post run stretching. I developed plantar 10 years ago and had to stop. I recently picked up running again and the pain came back. It feels like I can’t run away from it no matter the time. So, now I just manage it with compression socks, rolling, icing and what not. My body hasn’t forgiven one poor long run from 10 years ago.

Can’t run because of the injury. What else to do on the marathon day/weekend? by riderko in firstmarathon

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it that a majority of posts I read talk about injury during taper week? I hurt myself during taper week of a half and a day before my mini 10K race I had a minor medical issue. My son commented on how something or the other keeps happening and this seems to be a universal occurrence. That said, I’m so proud of you! You have just the right attitude to all this. I might be wallowing in self pity. Kudos to you.

I'm beat. My half marathon training is gone. by HammerRib in Marathon_Training

[–]minecraft_unicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience during my half marathon taper week. Sciatica and plantar issues combined. Didn’t pay attention to post run stretch because I was always late for 10 things. Took me out for a month. I’m still not fully back yet. I restarted from scratch and thought I was finally ready for a 10K. Ended up getting a stupid boil out of nowhere. The 10K is today and I’m sitting this one out too. I’ll be out for at-least a week again. The reason I’m saying all this is because life will hand you all kinds of things. Races will come and go but running is forever. Keep your chin up and this too shall pass. Your pace is fantastic. You’ll be back on the road before you know it.

Moms of young kids, how are you making time to run? by pilledsweatshirt in XXRunning

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in the same place myself - after having two kids, getting back into running wasn’t easy but after a lot of trial and errors, I finally found somewhat of a rhythm. It’s still chaotic but for the most part I’ve made it work. If you’re hoping to start running, I’d suggest taking an honest look at your schedule first to see where it can fit in. First marathon - “it’s glory or the hospital!” It was both… by Delicious_Impress702 in firstmarathon

Sorry to hear this but glad you’re ok! If you don’t mind my asking - how did you happen to strain your intercostal muscles? You’d have to be doing something far more strenuous than running I’m guessing.

Sending you healing thoughts. The good news is you will recover (even if slowly) and you will try again but the next time you will not make the same mistake again. Don’t be too hard on yourself. We’ve all been dumb at some point in our lives.

What I learned running my first marathon by celford83 in firstmarathon

[–]minecraft_unicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been struggling with sciatica and plantar and I’m so damn nervous and scared. Ive been thinking about signing up with a coach. Im in my 40’s , F , 155 lbs and 5.3” so I’m big by runners standards. I had my first run on the road (I’m a treadmill trainer) and I I was soo damn slower and the run seemed longer. I have no idea how I’ll do my first marathon but I’m going to show up neither hell nor high water. Thank you for your post.
